3. What is color Doppler
Ultrasounds?
Ultrasound, also called sonography or ultrasonography, is a
noninvasive imaging test. A standard ultrasound produces
images, but it doesn’t show blood flow like a Doppler
ultrasound.

4. Color Doppler: A computer changes the sound
waves into diffferent colors to show the
direction of blood flow.

© Check blood flow in veins, arteries, and
heart
© Look for narrowed or blocked arteries
© See how blood flows after treatment
© Look for bulging in an artery which is called
an aneurysm

To prepare for a Doppler ultrasound, you may
need to:

There are no known risks to having a Doppler
ultrasound. It is also considered safe during
pregnancy.

14. What do the results mean?
If your results were not normal, it may mean
you have:
©A blockage or clot in an artery

©An aneurysm, a balloon-like bulge in the
arteries. It causes the arteries to become
stretched and thin. If the wall becomes too
thin, the artery can rupture, causing life-
threatening bleeding.

17. Advantage of color Doppler imaging
⚫ Color Doppler imaging allows better
visualization of the proximal and distal
segments of the vertebral arteries,
compared to conventional duplex
ultrasonography.

18. Limitation of color Doppler imaging
⚫ One of the main disadvantages of
using a Doppler is the high level of
specialism required to maintain the
doppler so it continues to provide
results with a high level of accuracy,
and its inability to predict patterns.
