Analysis Of The Book Fierce Invalids Home From Hot...
As we read through this story we become aware of Switters contradictory nature, rather than
eschewing this trait he embraces it. He is a CIA agent who hates the government. He is a pacifist who
carries a gun and so on. Switters and his grandmother, Maestra, come up with six qualities that denote
the wisdom; they may or may not be required for wisdom, but they certainly drive Tom Robbins s
writing style. GOOD INTRO
When talking about wisdom to someone unaware of the process to OF becoming wise, one may say
that wisdom is knowing all there is to know about life; another may say that wisdom is having
ultimate knowledge and insight through experience. I personally agree with Tom Robbins when he
describes the six qualities needed for wisdom.
For instance, in the novel Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climate, Switters, a rogue CIA agent, is
confined to the physical and potentially spiritual elevation of a borrowed wheelchair by the curse of a
reclusive South American shaman. This particular event occurs early on in the novel and is a perfect
example of spirituality. Both Switters and his acquaintance R. Potney Smithe had spells cast upon
them. The shaman, End of Time explained what he had done, but neither of the men could truly
believe or understand what had been done. So to test the spell Smithe touches Switters S penis and
falls to the ground, stone cold, dead. Switters couldn t comprehend the reality of dying from some
superstitious taboo. So from that day on he resides in a

The Irrational Consumer Culture Surrounding Education
In his book Why Teach?, Mark Edmundson constructs an argument about the paradoxical consumer
culture surrounding education. The Virginian professor takes a stance on the problems that he has both
experienced in his own classroom and observed on campuses, and he approaches each problem in
turn, making significant claims which are assigned appropriate blames. His essay, Liberal Arts Lite
Entertainment, originally published in 1997, is broken into six sections and begins with his experience
at his own university before branching out to all those across the country. Following this is a
deduction of student culture as well as professors. He gives hope to the idea of the acceptance and
praising of genius (as opposed to the alienation students endorse so well) towards the end of his essay,
narrowing his argument down to a more specific change that could possibly cause a domino effect
from individual students to universities across America. The scale of the situation is much too large to
be easily fixed, and it is clear that Edmundson s purpose in writing this essay is to inform those who
are engulfed in the academic world. More specifically, it seems, he targets professors and higher level
students, and even possibly their parents. By singling out these people and making the problem of
consumer culture in universities known to those who care exponentially about educating the youth, it
is much more likely that Edmundson s argument will trickle down to said youth in the process

Strategies For An Employee From A Tax Perspective
ISOs are often preferred by startups as it s supposed to be better for an employee from a tax
perspective. This assumes that (1) AMT won t be triggered and (2) you ll get low long term capital
gains rate by holding the stock for the appropriate holding periods. However, often you either run
afoul of the AMT trap, or don t hold the stock long enough with the complicated 1 year + 2 year
requirement, or the spread at exercise is zero or small, so the difference wouldn t matter anyway.
NSOs do have a slightly higher tax because of the employment taxes. Overall, it s not clear the ISO is
that much better for employees, so many people argue for NSOs instead. Even more confusingly, ISOs
can make it harder to meet the long term capital gains holding period. Many people expect early
exercise together with an 83(b) election will help them hold the stock longer, to qualify for long term
capital gains. While this is true for NSOs, there is a murky part of the rules on ISOs that implies that
even with an 83(b) election, the capital gain holding period does not begin until the shares actually
vest. So, if you want to immediately exercise an option and file an Section 83(b) election, and you
might have liquidity soon, it s better if you can have it be an NSO.
Taxes on RSUs
If you are awarded RSUs, each unit represents one share of stock that you will be given when the units
vest. When you receive your shares you are taxed on their value at that time. If you are an

Literary Analysis Of Esperanza Rising
Literary Analysis of Esperanza Rising
Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. It is a figure of speech that is used
when an author wants to create certain moods or emotions, deepen the story s message, and secretly
tell the readers what could happen later in the story. The novel Esperanza Rising, by Pam Munoz
Ryan, is a story of struggle, hardship and determination following Esperanza, her family, and servants
as they flee from Mexico to California. The author uses a specific fruit as the title of each chapter to
symbolize emotions or events occurring within the chapters. Three specific chapters which truly use
symbolism to signify emotions are Figs, Plums, and Guavas. Figs represent a new beginning while

plums. Due to feeding the two children too many raw plums, she was challenged with the resulting
bowel movements and diaper changes. Esperanza was able to overcome the challenging day but the
plums will likely be a symbol of her and struggle to her and the author uses the figs as a literary
comparison to her difficulty that

FBO, Inc. is a Fixed base operator at the Metropolis airport whose business is divided into two groups
of operations, namely
a) Refueling of Commercial (40%) under contract Retail (60%)
b) Provision of a variety of services (refueling, maintenance, and Avionics) to private and corporate
aircraft.
Reiling, the General Managers is concerned that the commercial contract operations are not being
performed as efficiently as possible and is considering a variety of alternatives to alter operating
procedures and operations control. At the same time, if pooling is deemed inappropriate then the
implementation of a different format in the face of a hostile management/union relationship is a

In some instances, trucks were idle an additional one hour after refueling. Better organization of these
processes may allow the elimination of truck.
Following actions are most desirable:
1. Eliminate two of the trucks.
2. Can we reduce the size of the truck? Maintenance cost can be reduced.
3. Encourage maximum use of radios.
4. Try to obtain airline cooperation in notifying FBO s dispatcher about delays and other irregularities.
5. Install a communications system with the dispatcher.
6. Perhaps most important, improve scheduling rules. Among the improvements may be:
o Replacing the rule send a truck to meet plane with better communication between airline, the
dispatcher, and the truck drivers and
o Encouraging drivers to retop whenever their schedule permits and the truck reaches a certain level of
available capacity.
7. Insure that the lead dispatcher s position is filled with someone with both analytic and human skills.
The most difficult challenges in implementing these recommendations may well be the establishment
of more effective channels of communication with the airline customers. Because most of the action
should improve the working conditions and do not involve staff reductions, there should be few
objections from the union.

The Parent Trap Essay
The Parent Trap is a film from 1998 that takes place in London, Napa (California) and Maine. First it
begins in the Summer Camp in Maine, where two redheads Annie and Hallie coincidentally meet. In
there they found out that they were twins and that the last 12 years they have lived apart, but not only
from each other also from their parents. As well they decided to change places, so Hallie instead of
going to Napa with his father, goes with her mom to London and Annie with his dad to Napa. After the
unconventional plan of reunited their parents, they decided that they needed to know more about each
other, so the plan could work. Eventually it was the end of the summer camp, so each sister went to
their new home, but in the end their parents figure it out. The kids try to be subtle because only her
mom knew about the switch. Finally, when they get reunited in a Hotel his dad knew about it in a very
impressive moment because he was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the other part it also has plenty of fun moments. Hallie and Annie made an impressive role
especially because it was the same person Lindsay Lohan acting for the two sisters. Because of this I
think that this movie was a well received film because it doesn t matter that now days is old the kids
still enjoyed watching it. In 1961 and 1986 was the first movie The Parent Trap, but in this movie the
actress was Hayley Mills. This film has the same story of the one of Lindsay Lohan, but in this one the
events change, it tells you about that two sisters were separated since birth, and one lived in Boston
and the other one in California. In my opinion I think that both movies are good, but honestly, I´d
rather watch the one of Lindsay Lohan. Supposing you never had watch neither of them the most
probably is that you would watch the one that is more

Ancient Greek Theater
Have you ever just wanted to kill your parents? Perhaps they are not letting you order a seventh slice
of cheese pizza at Chuck E. Cheese s, or not letting you hang out with that dreamy hunk Bryan on
Saturday. For Oedipus, killing his parents was not something petty he threatened when he got too
worked up, but rather his fate. This suspenseful and masterful plot, conceived by the legendary
playwright Sophocles, was one of the many groundbreaking works to come out of fifth century BC
Greece. Works of ancient Greek theater, particularly Oedipus the King, embodied the spirit of
innovation that fifth century BC Athens was known for.
The fifth century BC in Athens, aptly known as the Golden Age, was a time of great achievements in

For a long time, only one actor was used, and often times the play s author himself would perform.
However, probably due to demand on a single actor s physique and voice, two actors were introduced.
Sophocles finally introduced a third actor, but three was the most Greek plays ever employed (Ley
25). Reminiscent of the dithyrambs from which they originated, Greek plays included a chorus of
anywhere from twelve to twenty four members who would provide poetic interludes and narrations
(Ley 22).
Theatric spectacle in Greece was not an everyday commodity. In fact, plays were only performed once
a year, at the Dionysia (Knox xx). For each of three days, sunrise to sunset, playgoers would sit
through three tragedies, a more lighthearted and whimsical satyr play, and a comedy. The tragedies
and the satyr play of the day would all be by the same poet, while the comedy was by a different
playwright (Knox xx). At the conclusion of the festival, awards would be given to the tragedians by a
panel of judges. Historians have no record on whether or not one of Simon Cowell s early ancestors
was on the panel.
Said to have often been awarded first prize, sometimes second, but never third in the Dionysia,
Sophocles is one of the most renowned and influential playwrights of not only his time, but of all time
(Ley 35). Born in 496 BC, just at the dawn of the fifth century BC, Sophocles prospered as a

The Overall Problem At Apple Inc.
The overall problem at Apple Inc. is a stagnant iPhone growth problem due to decreased innovation
and marketing efforts. Apple has hit a static point in its growth and continues to lose market share to
its global competitors while trying to recover and invent the next big product (Seeking Alpha, 2017).
Apple s innovation and marketing efforts have been minimal and thus reflect in the company s
declining global position, pricing and current growth statistics.
Apple Inc. has been stagnant over the past two years despite successful profits, a fast growing
dividend, and over $130 billion worth of share repurchases (Wall Street Journal, 2016). The staple

Apple lost valuable market share to Chinese manufacturers Huawei and Oppo, which saw promising
increases in their shares year over year (9to5Mac, 2017). Currently, the iPhone market share is
decreasing in China, the world s second largest economy after the U.S., which can be attributed to new
manufacturers and iPhone users delaying upgrades (9to5Mac, 2017). While all products go through a
product life cycle, Apple has already been through this cycle with at least two products (Forbes, 2016).
Currently, Apple has no backup to replace its vanguard iPhone product. Adding to injury, the
competing Huawei P9 phone compares well against the iPhone 7 and cost 30 percent cheaper than the
iPhone (9to5Mac, 2017). In addition, cheaper android phones that offer everything the iPhone does
and sometimes more at fraction of the price are also gaining market share rapidly (9to5Mac, 2017).
PROMOTION For the first time in over a decade, Apple reported a yearly decline in quarterly
revenue. This can be attributed in part to Apple s recent lack in marketing efforts (Linkedin, 2016).
Apple s advertising efforts once challenged consumer behavior and thus drove sales. The agency

How Women s Sexuality Is Portrayed By Hip Hop Music Videos
This research paper will examine the difference in how women s sexuality is portrayed in hip hop
music videos. Are women empowered, or are they objectified when they express their sexuality? The
public image of how women move, speak, sound, look, dance, talk, dress, and act is controlled by
corporate networks who present these societal norms to people through many mediums. Dominating
how women are portrayed in music videos, men are introducing audiences to certain tropes and ideals
women are expected to live up to. This heteronormative, White male fantasy, is unrealistic for women
and creates an unhealthy obsession and expectation that females of all sizes and races are supposed to
embody. In Women in Popular Music Media Empowered or Exploited? (p.9), Jamie Glantz asks Are
women represented as the subjects of their own desires, or do they seem to be preforming as the
objects of someone else s? Men and women alike intend for women to follow these societal rules.

woman. Lucy and Cyrus live lives that differ from the societal standards for women. Both women
embrace their sexuality and do not always agree with the traditional gender roles. Cyrus expresses her
views through controversial stunts on television and on social media. Although Lucy s life is not

The Importance Of Discrimination In The Film Industry
the main synonym neither to the discrimination in the industry nor the lack of female professionals.
Discrimination is not only lack of representation of the gender, but in this case also representation of
only a small pool of women specialists (Paydar 5). The same female actors, directors, producers,
writers, etc. are hired repeatedly, mostly those connected to the males at the top of the hierarchical
ladder or having had experience and success with the same studio before (John 432 437). Existence of
female professionals and hiring of a female for a project does not indicate the overcoming of systemic
barriers. The question is not only in the number or percentage of women involved in the production,
but about diversity and equal opportunities. Another component of initial hiring practices in film
studios is correlation with law and associations requirements. Diversity requirement that is standard
for the industry usually poses a quota that allows the employer to hire females or male minorities. By
providing a choice of hiring a male of color or a female, this provision allows studios to evade anti
discrimination laws (Paydar 8). Fighting all these exclusions based on sex and discrimination practices
is possible mostly by individual court orders through several claims available to women within US
laws (Bureau of National Affairs). However, there is a limited number of women in any field of the
film industry who would go to court suing multimillion studios that control a

Analysis Of Dr. Horton s Home Construction Company
A third of my life was spent in a family home in Elk Grove, California called Shadowbrook. More
accurately, Shadowbrook is the name of the model of one of the cookie cutter homes by DR Horton,
home construction company. This two story and approximately 2,450 square feet single family home
has four bedrooms and three bathrooms featuring a central heating and cooling system, fireplace, and
tandem three car garage. Shadowbrook was built in 2003 where my family was fortunately the first
owner of this structure housing my parents, myself, and my two sisters. Since Shadowbrook is a fairly
new house, little transformation has been done to the home; most transformation of the house was
applied to the landscaping of the lot of the house. One of the most memorable part of my life was the
feeling and the process of moving into an actual house as I had lived in apartments for the better part
of my life. Unfortunately, I gave very little thoughts about the house itself since any family house we
would have moved in would still had made me delighted for it would still be a new change or an
upgrade from my previous family residence. After a stumble of curiosity, I wanted to know what
expectation I had when moving into this family home and does it follow a particular trend of the time.
Moving to Elk Grove where lots of new construction home were on a rise, I expected to see stucco
cookies cutter homes as it was one of the trends I was seeing when we looked for a new home.

The Texas Rangers By Stephen F. Austin
In the early 1800s volunteers provided security services. They were mainly enrolled to watch over
large factories and other buildings. They also want to watch over local shops. They would alarm
people of fires and the occasional burglary. Around 1823, Stephen F. Austin created the Texas
Rangers. They say this was not the official beginning of the Rangers, because some people questioned
as to whether they were actually employed as Rangers. Originally they only had around ten men to
protect close to one thousand people. Instead, after the Mexican Revolution in 1835 is when they were
officially recognized them as an institution. They were an example of the security that the government
would provide to the new settlers.
In 1850 a Chicago Businessman named Allen Pinkerton created a private guard service. He was
originally contracted to protect available property, and ended up exposing the activities have a band of
counterfeiters. In 1861, he actually received national recognition when he was able to successfully
uncover a plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. During the Civil War, He helped organize the federal
Secret Service that helped the union. Pinkerton security is still around today, and is a leading provider
of risk management services for organizations around the world. With the formation of this agency,
other agencies were also formed and these included Wells Fargo Company, Brinks, Burns, and others.
These agencies were often employed to track down wanted persons.

Reputation Of Pablo Picasso
Reputation is the belief or opinion that is held about someone or something generally about their
character, position, or status. Many famous people have reputations. For e.g. artists, people in power,

also struggled to establish their reputations. Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno

He painted in a style that was strongly influenced by the African sculptures. The huge achievement of
this period was Les Demoiselles d Avignon (1907). He abandoned the traditional art and used
distortions and geometric forms to create female figures which was challenging to the expectations of
others. Later, because of patriotic and political issues, he denied that African art never inspired him. In
the next period Cubism (1909 1914) Picasso worked with dimension and moved towards abstraction.
It was like different objects are broken apart and then reassembled in abstract forms. Cubism stunned
and fascinated the art world. Braque said It made me feel as if someone was drinking gasoline and

changed avant garde all over again. Cubism had two branches Analytic (1909 1912) and synthetic

and often monochromatic palette. E.g. Girl with a Mandolin (1910), Bread and Fruit Dish On a Table

Visual Elements Of Art Falls
An unestablished piece of art that stuck out to me was railroad tracks. This work of art speaks to me
because it reminds me of the many people who were slaves that tried to escape to freedom many years
ago. Their journey was filled with endless runinng trying to escape their old lives filled with danger,
and abuse. These individuals were in search of an uknown world that awaited them. Moreover, it is
reminiscent of leaving one s old life behind in search of something new, the unkown. The artistic
impulse that this work of art falls under is refreshing our vision to see the world in new ways.
Immediately seeing a railroad track might not result in everyone having the same interpretation of how
this falls into the realm of an unestablished work of art. There are various visual elements present:
their definitely is a stark outline by the brown rustic rails that are an array of vertical lines. The
horizontal lines are represented by the wooden blocks of wood which in spite of some slight chipping
remain intact to secure passerbys on trains or those traveling by. Looking farther are diagnoal lines
which draws the viewers eyes to the railroad tracks and the dumpsters surrounding it.
Additionally, the green color of the dumpsters along with their black lids provide a sense of variety.
The dumpsters are varying sizes and are arranged a certain distance apart from each other similar to
the baggage that people carry when escaping one world and entering into another. The struggle

Speak With Courage Speech Analysis
Did you know that public speaking is ranked as the number one fear in America? This fear, called
glossophobia, is as common as fingers and toes. (McDermott,5). Many of us have experienced anxiety
during a speech. It might have happened to you, and also it might have happened to your friends too.
It happens to everyone, even to those people who today are famous and excellent speakers. The book
Speak with Courage written by Martin McDermott, author and master teacher, is a unique guide to the
art of confident public speaking. This book has helped thousands of students to overcome their fears
and rise above speech anxiety by using the right techniques. I totally agree with McDermott when he
claims that everyone can leave behind the fear of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everything in this earth is in a continuous state of enhancing, refining, raising ...improving. In order to
make progress we should know what prevent us from being successful, what specifically causes this
type of social anxiety. Form my own experiences, I have realized that the fear of speaking in public is
triggered by three things fear of forgetting, fear of judgment and expectation of perfection. Even
though I practice before I give a speech that is not enough for me to succeed. Being in front of the
audience makes me feel anxious, nervous, apprehensive and concerned. Sometimes these symptoms
makes me forget everything. As McDermott said, Much of the pressure and anxiety of public speaking
arises from the unrealistic expectation of recalling every word of talk in its exact order. So I try not to
memorize all the information, instead I connect my ideas by using different methods. In this way I
manage the fear of forgetting. In addition speaker, including myself, are also concerned about the
audience s judgment. The main purpose is to grab their attention, share ideas and have a good
feedback form them. If you show that you know the material very well, you are enough prepared and
confident in yourself fear starts to minimize. The opposite will result in loss of self esteem,
concentration and control of the situation. And the third cause of stage fright is expectation of
perfection. Personally, when I have a speech I practice a lot in order to deliver

William Shakespeare s Merchant of Venice
William Shakespeare s Merchant of Venice
In many ways, shylock is a more difficult character for a modern audience than for an Elizabethan
audience. With close reference to Act 1 scene 3, Act 3 scene 1 and Act 4 scene 1 show how an actor
might reveal the human being behind the stereotype.
The merchant of Venice is a play written in Elizabethan times by William Shakespeare. The play is set
in Elizabethan Venice. The play starts with Antonio, a rich merchant, who is depressed without any
obvious reason. He denies that he is worried about his merchant ships or that he is in love.
Antonio has lent money to his friend Bassanio in the past, but this time Bassanio wants to borrow

Portia quickly arranges a speedy wedding and then sends the two husbands back to Venice with an
offer of several times the Original loan.
Lorenzo and Jessica are left to look after the house as Portia and Nerissa pretend to go to a religious
retreat to pray for the success of their husbands. In reality, they are going to Venice, with Lawyers
robes and Legal advice from one of Portia s cousins, Bellario.
Antonio has been allowed to visit Shylock from gaol to try and persuade him to be lenient. Shylock,
however, is having none of it as he is bent on having his revenge.
In court, Antonio casts a sorry figure, he makes it clear that there is no way that Shylock will change
his mind and has psychologically resigned himself to his fate. He knows that the law cannot be altered
for one man s convenience.
After appealing in vain to Shylock, Portia confirms the law.
Shylock has all of his apparatus with him and ready prepared. At the last moment just before he is
about to kill Antonio, Portia points out that he is not to spill any blood, and that he must take only a
pound of flesh, no more, no less. If he breaks this rule then Shylock must die. Also, he has tried to kill
a Venetian citizen, so half of his goods must go to his intended victim and the other half of his goods
to the state. The Duke now has control over whether Shylock lives or

Biographical School Of Criticism In The Little Foxes By...
Throughout the their lifespans many authors receive criticism on every work of theirs, whether it be
good or bad. Criticism can be received from all sorts of people. Every literary work has the potential
to be broken down into multiple schools of thought, but when it is done professionally by a literary
critic the criticism is generally specialized into a certain school of philosophy. One particular work by
the author/playwright Lillian Hellman is The Little Foxes .
The Little Foxes can be characterized by the biographical school of criticism. The biographical school
of criticism is one where the criticism pertains to the fact that the author s work reflects his/her life
and the goal is to make connections between the author s life and what they had written about

In their conquest they essentially took over the land and plantation that Birdie s family had owned,
once Oscar and Birdie were wed. The Hubbard family can be likened to Hellman s mother s family
who have been characterized as eccentric and avaricious (PBS). Hellman s mother s family were the
Marxes and they had resided in Demopolis, Alabama. Hellman s great grandfather Isaac Marx, the
first Jewish settler of Demopolis, emigrated from Bavaria to west Alabama in 1844 (Gantt). Yet
another parallel that can be drawn, the Hubbard s came about to the deep South (the exact location is

Regina Giddens, who was quite controversial to the image of a typical woman at the time, is said to
have represented Hellman s grandmother. Hellman s Uncle Jacob Marx, who was a successful banker,
was represented by Ben Hubbard. Hellman s mother was represented by Birdie Hubbard. Hellman

The Australian Professional Standard for Principals (APSP) is a public statement setting out what
school principals are expected to know, understand and do (AITSL, 2014, p. 3) in order to provide
effective schooling for Australia s young people. The Melbourne Declaration (2008, p. ) articulates the
need equity and excellence in Australian schooling and that all young Australians become: successful
learners; confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens . In order to achieve

Vision and values
Leithwood and Jantzi argue the ability to articulate a clear vision is an essential attribute for school
leaders (2008, p. 507). Goal setting is a powerful motivator for change and when leaders are able to
clearly communicate inspiration vision to those they lead, it is possible to harness this motivation to
bring about school improvement in student learning (Leithwood Jantzi, 2008, p.507). Clearly defined
goals encourage school community to contribute to common goals and also streamlines decision
making as only options that align with the vision need to be considered (Hallinger, 2010, p.129).
When discussing research into high performing schools, Matthews argues, Clear pupil centred vision
and purpose ensured pupils reached their potential. Maximising young people s well being and
achievements was at the heart of these schools (2010, p.9). The inclusion of vision in the APSP is
substantiated by research evidence gathered for at least the last 40

Wes Anderson Cinematic Style Essay
Wes Anderson Cinematic style
The filming industry has greatly changed in the last couple of decades. Unlike in the past, the modern
times have seen great transformations in the filming world with the emergence of a clique of
celebrated film directors and developers. Whereas films were mainly praised on how the character and
the characterization including, much attention has been given to film directors and developers with
regard to the tastes and preferences as may be demonstrated by the way their films have been designed
and arranged. Continued specialization in script writing and development of films has brought out the
nature of preferences and leanings of various directors, a situation that has resulted in what is today

Indeed, this is a very unique feature that can be used in recognizing the contributions of the film
director in as far as the modern film is concern. From the 1990 s, one would easily categories
Anderson s cinematic style as one that incorporates more quirky comedy and the whimsical motifs in
terms of allowing nostalgia to supremely reign, staging children to have existential importance,
designing families to meet in strangest of the places, incorporation of strange human conversation and
interaction, presentation of art as being more important than any other thing in the world, staging
obsessed and self absorbed characters, providing for every other thing to be extraordinarily rectilinear
and the presentation of children as more adult than adults.
Anderson s films are known for allowing nostalgia to supremely reign. This is one of the strongest

There are no Children Here Essay
Alex Kotlowitz s book, There are No Children Here, is a story about two boys, Pharoah and Lafeyette
Rivers growing in the late 1980 s in Henry Horner, a housing project in Chicago. The boys try to
retain their youth while they see constant gang violence, death of close friends, their brother in jail and
their dad struggling with a drug addiction.
In Horner, there are two gangs that claim it as their turf, and the Rivers family is constantly ducking
from shots of gunfire there. They live in an overcrowded apartment with leaky facets, heating
problems and animal carcasses in the basement. The boys mother, LaJoe, tries to keep them away
from gangs and violence since her eldest children fell to the harsh ... Show more content on

He continued to tell his mother he was too young to comprehend it all, as if he were trying to prolong
his childhood (Kotlowitz 216). Both boys did recognized at an early age that death occurs frequently
in their neighborhood. They had several friends die and they were reminded of this every time gunfire
went off outside the apartment. Pharoah tried to maintain his childhood the best he could and excelled
in school as a coping mechanism. Lafeyette, at thirteen, acted as a parent to fill his mother s role when
she was out.
The government makes one of the biggest contributions to the welfare of the family by providing
financial safety. The problem is that the government fails to show any concern for these families
unless it is brought to their attention, and even then nothing is changed. The lack of interest by the
housing authorities leads to the neglect of Horner for over fifteen years. The rotting carcasses
explained the putrid odor rising from the Riverses toilet. It wasn t aborted fetuses, as LaJoe had
though. It was dead animals, the stench of rotting flesh rising through the pipes (Kotlowitz 241). The
government leaves the projects to fend for themselves, which increased the communities turmoil. If
the government and the people worked together, more problems could be solved.
The family is the closest, most stable element in the boys life. LaJoe tries hard to make sure the boys
are surrounded with positive influences so that they will grow up secure. This

How Does Deviance Crime And Social Control Affect Society
How do deviance, crimes, and social control impact society? Deviance is said to be the behavior that
violates social norms and arouses negative social reaction. Crimes is the behavior that violates these
laws and is an important type of deviance that concern many Americans. Social control refers to the
ways in which a society tries to prevent and sanction behavior that violates the norms. Deviance,
crimes, and social control are three main category in our society today. Deviance have an impact on
society because as Emile Durkheim explains that it clarifies social norms and increases comformity.
Norms is a standard or pattern of social behavior that is expected in a group and comformity is a type
of social influence involving change in belief behavior in order to fit in with a group. An example
would be if you are driving over the speed limit and you get pulled over, every car on the road will
start going the speed limit. It reminds them of the consequences. Deviance behavior is behavior that

which can also harm anyone in its way. Crimes has been an impact on not only people but on
communities and businesses as well. When people are moving they want to be in an area where they

Gun-Related Deaths In The United States
Gun Control
There are upwards of 33,000 gun related deaths in the United States each year; but don t get a bias yet,
almost two thirds of those deaths are suicides, and could be prevented if guns were properly stored
and if depression was properly dealt with. Despite the fact that so many deaths occur annually as a
result of guns, firearms are used 80 times more to save a life than to take one.
Gun control might sound like a good approach to impede the rate of gun deaths at first, but when you
contemplate it, you realize that if a criminal wanted to procure a firearm, he wouldn t go about it in a
justifiable way. The criminal would presumably buy a gun off the Black Market where the law has no
jurisdiction. Someone who has no respect for

The New Black
The speech I attended was a panel of women who had all previously been to prison. This panel was
particularly interesting because these women were the inspiration for the television series Orange is
the New Black. The Netflix original series is based on Piper Kerman s book of the same name. The
book was based on her experience in the women s prison Danbury, which is located in Connecticut.
Piper wrote about her personal story and the stories of many of the women she interacted with.
Several of these very women came to Suffolk University to give a talk on their own personal
experience in the prison system and their thoughts on the television series. There were four women
who spoke to us, two of whom were in prison with Piper, one who attended the same prison at a
different time, and one women who was a professor at Suffolk University and had never been to
prison. Each woman spoke about her own personal experience with the prison system and they all
spoke about the issues surrounding the United States legal system. They also all spoke about the
problems with America s glorification of the prison system, especially in recent years. The entire
speech was very clearly targeted to college students, as each woman spent time addressing us
personally as the next generation who can do something about the faulty legal system. The entirety of
the speech extremely informative and motivated, while also being interesting a sometimes funny. This
speech was interesting in the fact that

  • 2. Analysis Of The Book Fierce Invalids Home From Hot... As we read through this story we become aware of Switters contradictory nature, rather than eschewing this trait he embraces it. He is a CIA agent who hates the government. He is a pacifist who carries a gun and so on. Switters and his grandmother, Maestra, come up with six qualities that denote the wisdom; they may or may not be required for wisdom, but they certainly drive Tom Robbins s writing style. GOOD INTRO When talking about wisdom to someone unaware of the process to OF becoming wise, one may say that wisdom is knowing all there is to know about life; another may say that wisdom is having ultimate knowledge and insight through experience. I personally agree with Tom Robbins when he describes the six qualities needed for wisdom. For instance, in the novel Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climate, Switters, a rogue CIA agent, is confined to the physical and potentially spiritual elevation of a borrowed wheelchair by the curse of a reclusive South American shaman. This particular event occurs early on in the novel and is a perfect example of spirituality. Both Switters and his acquaintance R. Potney Smithe had spells cast upon them. The shaman, End of Time explained what he had done, but neither of the men could truly believe or understand what had been done. So to test the spell Smithe touches Switters S penis and falls to the ground, stone cold, dead. Switters couldn t comprehend the reality of dying from some superstitious taboo. So from that day on he resides in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Irrational Consumer Culture Surrounding Education In his book Why Teach?, Mark Edmundson constructs an argument about the paradoxical consumer culture surrounding education. The Virginian professor takes a stance on the problems that he has both experienced in his own classroom and observed on campuses, and he approaches each problem in turn, making significant claims which are assigned appropriate blames. His essay, Liberal Arts Lite Entertainment, originally published in 1997, is broken into six sections and begins with his experience at his own university before branching out to all those across the country. Following this is a deduction of student culture as well as professors. He gives hope to the idea of the acceptance and praising of genius (as opposed to the alienation students endorse so well) towards the end of his essay, narrowing his argument down to a more specific change that could possibly cause a domino effect from individual students to universities across America. The scale of the situation is much too large to be easily fixed, and it is clear that Edmundson s purpose in writing this essay is to inform those who are engulfed in the academic world. More specifically, it seems, he targets professors and higher level students, and even possibly their parents. By singling out these people and making the problem of consumer culture in universities known to those who care exponentially about educating the youth, it is much more likely that Edmundson s argument will trickle down to said youth in the process ... • 4. Strategies For An Employee From A Tax Perspective ISOs are often preferred by startups as it s supposed to be better for an employee from a tax perspective. This assumes that (1) AMT won t be triggered and (2) you ll get low long term capital gains rate by holding the stock for the appropriate holding periods. However, often you either run afoul of the AMT trap, or don t hold the stock long enough with the complicated 1 year + 2 year requirement, or the spread at exercise is zero or small, so the difference wouldn t matter anyway. NSOs do have a slightly higher tax because of the employment taxes. Overall, it s not clear the ISO is that much better for employees, so many people argue for NSOs instead. Even more confusingly, ISOs can make it harder to meet the long term capital gains holding period. Many people expect early exercise together with an 83(b) election will help them hold the stock longer, to qualify for long term capital gains. While this is true for NSOs, there is a murky part of the rules on ISOs that implies that even with an 83(b) election, the capital gain holding period does not begin until the shares actually vest. So, if you want to immediately exercise an option and file an Section 83(b) election, and you might have liquidity soon, it s better if you can have it be an NSO. Taxes on RSUs If you are awarded RSUs, each unit represents one share of stock that you will be given when the units vest. When you receive your shares you are taxed on their value at that time. If you are an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Literary Analysis Of Esperanza Rising Literary Analysis of Esperanza Rising Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. It is a figure of speech that is used when an author wants to create certain moods or emotions, deepen the story s message, and secretly tell the readers what could happen later in the story. The novel Esperanza Rising, by Pam Munoz Ryan, is a story of struggle, hardship and determination following Esperanza, her family, and servants as they flee from Mexico to California. The author uses a specific fruit as the title of each chapter to symbolize emotions or events occurring within the chapters. Three specific chapters which truly use symbolism to signify emotions are Figs, Plums, and Guavas. Figs represent a new beginning while Plums and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to feeding the two children too many raw plums, she was challenged with the resulting bowel movements and diaper changes. Following actions are most desirable: 1. Among the improvements may be: o Replacing the rule send a truck to meet plane with better communication between airline, the dispatcher, and the truck drivers and o Encouraging drivers to retop whenever their schedule permits and the truck reaches a certain level of available capacity. 7. In there they found out that they were twins and that the last 12 years they have lived apart, but not only from each other also from their parents. In 1961 and 1986 was the first movie The Parent Trap, but in this movie the actress was Hayley Mills. This film has the same story of the one of Lindsay Lohan, but in this one the events change, it tells you about that two sisters were separated since birth, and one lived in Boston and the other one in California. • 9. Ancient Greek Theater Have you ever just wanted to kill your parents? Perhaps they are not letting you order a seventh slice of cheese pizza at Chuck E. Cheese s, or not letting you hang out with that dreamy hunk Bryan on Saturday. For Oedipus, killing his parents was not something petty he threatened when he got too worked up, but rather his fate. This suspenseful and masterful plot, conceived by the legendary playwright Sophocles, was one of the many groundbreaking works to come out of fifth century BC Greece. Works of ancient Greek theater, particularly Oedipus the King, embodied the spirit of innovation that fifth century BC Athens was known for. The fifth century BC in Athens, aptly known as the Golden Age, was a time of great achievements in art and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For a long time, only one actor was used, and often times the play s author himself would perform. However, probably due to demand on a single actor s physique and voice, two actors were introduced. Sophocles finally introduced a third actor, but three was the most Greek plays ever employed (Ley 25). Reminiscent of the dithyrambs from which they originated, Greek plays included a chorus of anywhere from twelve to twenty four members who would provide poetic interludes and narrations (Ley 22). Theatric spectacle in Greece was not an everyday commodity. In fact, plays were only performed once a year, at the Dionysia (Knox xx). For each of three days, sunrise to sunset, playgoers would sit through three tragedies, a more lighthearted and whimsical satyr play, and a comedy. The tragedies and the satyr play of the day would all be by the same poet, while the comedy was by a different playwright (Knox xx). At the conclusion of the festival, awards would be given to the tragedians by a panel of judges. Historians have no record on whether or not one of Simon Cowell s early ancestors was on the panel. Said to have often been awarded first prize, sometimes second, but never third in the Dionysia, Sophocles is one of the most renowned and influential playwrights of not only his time, but of all time (Ley 35). • 10. The Overall Problem At Apple Inc. The overall problem at Apple Inc. is a stagnant iPhone growth problem due to decreased innovation and marketing efforts. Apple has hit a static point in its growth and continues to lose market share to its global competitors while trying to recover and invent the next big product (Seeking Alpha, 2017). Apple s innovation and marketing efforts have been minimal and thus reflect in the company s declining global position, pricing and current growth statistics. Apple Inc. has been stagnant over the past two years despite successful profits, a fast growing dividend, and over $130 billion worth of share repurchases (Wall Street Journal, 2016). Apple lost valuable market share to Chinese manufacturers Huawei and Oppo, which saw promising increases in their shares year over year (9to5Mac, 2017). Currently, the iPhone market share is decreasing in China, the world s second largest economy after the U.S., which can be attributed to new manufacturers and iPhone users delaying upgrades (9to5Mac, 2017). While all products go through a product life cycle, Apple has already been through this cycle with at least two products (Forbes, 2016). Currently, Apple has no backup to replace its vanguard iPhone product. Adding to injury, the competing Huawei P9 phone compares well against the iPhone 7 and cost 30 percent cheaper than the iPhone (9to5Mac, 2017). In addition, cheaper android phones that offer everything the iPhone does and sometimes more at fraction of the price are also gaining market share rapidly (9to5Mac, 2017). PROMOTION For the first time in over a decade, Apple reported a yearly decline in quarterly revenue. This can be attributed in part to Apple s recent lack in marketing efforts (Linkedin, 2016). Apple s advertising efforts once challenged consumer behavior and thus drove sales. • 12. How Women s Sexuality Is Portrayed By Hip Hop Music Videos This research paper will examine the difference in how women s sexuality is portrayed in hip hop music videos. Are women empowered, or are they objectified when they express their sexuality? The public image of how women move, speak, sound, look, dance, talk, dress, and act is controlled by corporate networks who present these societal norms to people through many mediums. Dominating how women are portrayed in music videos, men are introducing audiences to certain tropes and ideals women are expected to live up to. This heteronormative, White male fantasy, is unrealistic for women and creates an unhealthy obsession and expectation that females of all sizes and races are supposed to embody. In Women in Popular Music Media Empowered or Exploited? (p.9), Jamie Glantz asks Are women represented as the subjects of their own desires, or do they seem to be preforming as the objects of someone else s? • 14. The Importance Of Discrimination In The Film Industry the main synonym neither to the discrimination in the industry nor the lack of female professionals. Discrimination is not only lack of representation of the gender, but in this case also representation of only a small pool of women specialists (Paydar 5). The same female actors, directors, producers, writers, etc. are hired repeatedly, mostly those connected to the males at the top of the hierarchical ladder or having had experience and success with the same studio before (John 432 437). Existence of female professionals and hiring of a female for a project does not indicate the overcoming of systemic barriers. The question is not only in the number or percentage of women involved in the production, but about diversity and equal opportunities. Another component of initial hiring practices in film studios is correlation with law and associations requirements. Diversity requirement that is standard for the industry usually poses a quota that allows the employer to hire females or male minorities. By providing a choice of hiring a male of color or a female, this provision allows studios to evade anti discrimination laws (Paydar 8). Fighting all these exclusions based on sex and discrimination practices is possible mostly by individual court orders through several claims available to women within US laws (Bureau of National Affairs). However, there is a limited number of women in any field of the film industry who would go to court suing multimillion studios that control a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Analysis Of Dr. Horton s Home Construction Company A third of my life was spent in a family home in Elk Grove, California called Shadowbrook. More accurately, Shadowbrook is the name of the model of one of the cookie cutter homes by DR Horton, home construction company. This two story and approximately 2,450 square feet single family home has four bedrooms and three bathrooms featuring a central heating and cooling system, fireplace, and tandem three car garage. Shadowbrook was built in 2003 where my family was fortunately the first owner of this structure housing my parents, myself, and my two sisters. Since Shadowbrook is a fairly new house, little transformation has been done to the home; most transformation of the house was applied to the landscaping of the lot of the house. One of the most memorable part of my life was the feeling and the process of moving into an actual house as I had lived in apartments for the better part of my life. Unfortunately, I gave very little thoughts about the house itself since any family house we would have moved in would still had made me delighted for it would still be a new change or an upgrade from my previous family residence. After a stumble of curiosity, I wanted to know what expectation I had when moving into this family home and does it follow a particular trend of the time. Moving to Elk Grove where lots of new construction home were on a rise, I expected to see stucco cookies cutter homes as it was one of the trends I was seeing when we looked for a new home.
