Slavery In Cincinnati
Cincinnati is a beautiful city on the Ohio River in southern Ohio that has a very rich history. The city
was founded in 1788 and soon blossomed into a thriving city. One important part of Cincinnati s
history was its involvement in the underground railroad and abolitionists. Based on the Ohio River it
posed as a perfect place to cross on the way to freedom. It also was close to the border with the south
during the civil war, causing it as a marker of entrance into the northern part of the united states during
the war. Cincinnati was a important part of the underground railroad, abolitionist movements, and the
fight to end slavery. The underground railroad was not a real railroad to begin with, it was a series of
stations that hoped to lead ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the more famous oppositions of the abolition of slavery in Cincinnati was the Cincinnati Riots
of 1829. Cincinnati was full of irish immigrants and they disliked the competition they received from
the African American community in the area. Irish attacked African Americans in the area trying to get
them to leave the area, leaving more jobs for the immigrants. Some of the African Americans left,
while others stayed and fought for their jobs and lives. Another attack occurred later in 1836, this time
attacking a printing press that was publishing a anti slavery newspaper. A mob destroyed the press,
throwing it out into the streets in attempt to deter the publisher, soon though he continued to publish
his newspaper. The Ohio river was a prominent part of railroad in Cincinnati. It was referred to the
jordan river by conductors and passengers. It was common to talk in code using biblical names on the
railroad and among conductors, such as calling Canada the promised land . One famous house that
was a station on the underground railroad based on the Ohio river was the Rankin

Sopranos Smallgoods
The legal responsibilities of workplace safety With the critical considerations of the case, Sopranos
Smallgoods has been confronted with a diverse set of negative issues relative to workplace safety. The
fundamental employees and supervisors have the low level of attitudes and behaviours to support
workplace safety, and the company of Sopranos does not have the effective mechanism and physical
infrastructure facilities to support the workplace safety mission. According to the identification of
Aupperle, Carroll and Hatfield (1985), the corporation has various legal responsibilities to support the
workplace safety, in order to further protect the interests of existing employees in the workplace.

According to the description of Hart (2010), it is essential to create a safe work environment to be the

Native American Art Of Navajo Blanket Weaving Essay
Native American Art of the Navajo Blanket Weaving
Ingrid Anderson
Governors State University
Native American Art of the Navajo Blanket Weaving
Native Americans are the indigenous people of the North American continent and the cultural
traditions and art forms are unique to these regional groups. The people in these groups have several
names and the first adopted name Indian by Spanish explorers proved erroneous, however, now
accepted names include either American Indian or Native American. I will refer to these groups as
Native Americans or by their tribal affiliation. There are diverse tribal groups original to North
America who lived on the Great Plains, in the Woodlands, on the Northwest coast, and in the
Southeast or the Southwest regions. Various Native American tribes created art forms such as the
Apache, Cherokee, Pueblo, and Hopi communities. In my research, I found that the Navajo also
contributed in many ways to Native American art through making jewelry, beading, drawing, painting,
sculpting, carving, and weaving. These art works provided their tribe notoriety with countless years of
experience through their creativity and sense of design , lending to an astonishing volume and variety
of artwork which has created a lasting legacy , per NativeAmerican Art.com (2010). Understandably,
art comes in various forms and from various cultures, but the Native American Navajo tribe
contributed vastly and merits mention for its beautiful contributions. Therefore, I

Comparison Of Aldous Huxley s Nineteen Eighty-Four
George Orwell also took influence from authors who were active in his own lifetime, such as English
author Aldous Huxley. Orwell s novel Nineteen Eighty Four most commonly gets compared to Aldous
Huxley s novel Brave New World, which was originally published in 1932, seventeen years before
Orwell published his own anti totalitarian work. Comparable to Nineteen Eighty Four, Brave New
World is a dystopian novel in which a political agenda is discussed via a fabricated government.
However, while similarities can be drawn, the two differ in their content. In Brave New World, Huxley
s fictional society is controlled by drugs and efforts to distract its citizens who are immersed in a
world of technology that could only have been dreamed of at the ... Show more content on

In the same fashion that he took influence from the writings of other authors before him, authors in the
generations after him have done the same. Margaret Atwood, whose novel The Handmaid s Tale
(1985) has sparked political interest in its recent resurgence much as Orwell s works have, was
inspired by Orwell s ideologies, mainly those represented in Animal Farm. As previously mentioned,
Orwell is no novice at creating dystopian societies, a skill that Atwood, too, shows in The Handmaid s
Tale, the plot of which centers around the handmaids (women) being used strictly for reproductive
purposes. The more substantial influence, however, is the use of satire in literature. In Animal Farm,
Orwell created a politically satirical society of animals meant to represent the regime under Joseph
Stalin, whom he opposed. In The Handmaid s Tale, however, Atwood used satire for social justices
rather than a political agenda, though the two often coincide. Atwood takes a dystopian view of a
world in which women are used as objects to keep the population alive and uses it to make readers
understand why feminism is needed; if women are not allowed to choose what they are able to do with
their bodies, be it abortion or birth control, they will soon only be seen as a means of

Second Messenger Research Paper
Second messengers and their actions
Second messengers are intracellular molecules that transmit received signs at receptors on the cell
surface to the target molecules. They also, expand strength of signals.
Second messenger are classified into three major classes:
1) Cyclic nucleotides.
2) Inositol triphosphate IP3 and diacylglycerol DAG.
3) Calcium ions Ca3+.
Common mechanism of second messenger system:
There are several different secondary messenger systems, but they all are quite similar in overall
mechanism, although the substances involved and overall effects can vary.
This conformation change can affect the activity of the receptor and result in the production of active
second messages.

Peptides and protein hormones like: (vasopressin, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), and

That binding activates the intracellular enzyme phospholipase C (PLC).
The intracellular enzyme phospholipase C (PLC) hydrolyzes phospholipids specifically

The Basketball Association And The Nba
The National Basketball Association, or the NBA, is a men s professional basketball league in the
USA. The National Basketball Association was born in 1949 after the Basketball Association of
America and the National Basketball League merged as one. Maurice Podoloff was elected head of the
new league that consisted of seventeen teams which came from cities and towns all across the country.
The NBA did not have a great start with its teams dwindling to only eight teams in the 1950s. At this
point, the league transformed the game with the addition of the shot clock. The shot clock in the NBA
is 24 seconds, meaning the offensive team has 24 seconds from the time they inbound the ball until the
ball hits the rim on their side of the court. This addition increased the pace of the game and made it
more fun for fans to watch. Their transformation worked, and the league returned to a financially
stable one in the 1960/70s. Today, the NBA has millions of fans from all walks of life, all over the
world. The league now consists of 30 teams from various states in North America as well as one team
from Canada. The teams are divided into two conferences and then three divisions of five teams each.
To play the sport of basketball there are players; five on the court at a time, coaches, a basketball, two
hoops, high top shoes to protect player s ankles, and a court with specific lines painted out to represent
boundaries.
As a league, the NBA makes roughly 5.18 billion dollars

Africans and Native Americans as slaves in mines to get him even more gold only a few years after

I feel as if that Dollar General has the right idea by keeping their stores well stocked with supplies but
if customers can t even get around to shop the items due to those items blocking aisle then the purpose
of the entire supply is pointless. After doing some research I discovered what I think is actually
occurring at Dollar General stores when it comes to shipment of inventory. The line chart below

rates impact retailer s cost. I think that Dollar General is experiencing a destroyed rate, as shown on

The dirty old bus came into view, seeming to drive much faster than the speed limit. Ted noticed that
something was wrong, but before he could think of what it was, the bus flew right past him.

The runners heard this and stopped immediately to see exactly who got the record.
I ll bet you re faster than any man alive! The coach announced. I will sign you up for a race in the city
as soon as possible, because that was truly remarkable! Have you ever run in an organized race
before? He asked. Ted shook his head.
You could win yourself a lot of cash this way! Coach replied.
And suddenly, Ted could see his new future in his head. Yes, there would be a bit of money involved,
maybe more than only a bit...
~ Ted bent down at the starting line, as ready as ever, for he d been training for the last three weeks,

Fortunately, the soul has escaped from daytime into a place that [k]eeps other time[,] and like a

But this was never A ghost s endeavour Nor finished this, Was ghost at ease; And till it pass Love shall

The soul didn t have the initial goal of only being able to express its love under the faint light of the

love can no longer be openly expressed. It finds temporary healing in this lunar beauty, but only till it

Bortons Reflective Framework Model
Using Bortons (1970) reflective framework model, I am going to reflect on an experience I have had
whilst out in practice with the community mental health team in the North of England. Whilst on
placement I noticed there were numerous referrals of individuals with personality disorder. Whilst in

the individual s welfare and when speaking to the services users myself, I found it difficult due to me
having limited experiencing working with individuals who have a diagnosis of personality disorder
(PD). Because of this, I have decided to look up possible research ideas regarding PD. To see if there
was a different type of medications, therapies and other services which are available to individuals
with varied diagnosis of PD. From my experience and observations of working on acute wards, I

American fired a second Volley. The British were surprised since they usually fire once and then run.
Many militia men did lay down their guns and run. The second American volley was noted as one the
most effective single volleys of the war. British continued their advance and the militia disintegrated.
The British headed towards the second line. The second line was in a wooded and hilly terrain and

guerilla type warfare. The British suffered the most casualties at this line, but the British were able to
overlap the American right, bend it back and soon made it collapse. The third line was the strongest

Cronus God Of Time Essay
Cronus or Kronos was the Titan god of Harvest and Time. He was the youngest of the first generation
of titans that were bore by Gaia, the earth, and his father Uranus. Cronus was often depicted carrying a
scythe or sickle, therefore, it can be argued that Cronus being the god of time could also be death. The
reason for this is because death is often depicted as wearing robes while carrying a scythe or sickle.
Cronus rises to power by overthrowing his father Uranus. Uranus grows weary of his wife Gaia s
creations, mainly the hundred handed Hecatonchires and the Cyclopes. Uranus takes the
Hecatonchires and shoves them back into the Earth effectively blocking any further creation by Gaia.
Gaia is not happy with this so she creates the sickle and goes to her children, the titans, and asks
which of them will exact revenge on Uranus. In the end all of the titans decline except for Cronus. So,
wielding the sickle Cronus faces his father and castrates him, casting his testicles into the sea. The ...

Philippine Immigration in the USA after 1990 Essay
The U.S. colonized the Philippines between 1900 and 1934. This had a significant impact on the mass
immigration of the Filipinos. The Filipino immigrants were then made U.S. nationals and granted the
opportunity of settling in the U.S. and protected by its law and constitution. The increase in demand
for labor in California farmlands and Hawaiian plantation led to a surge of Filipino immigrants
seeking these jobs (Abraham 14). They mostly came from the provinces of Cebu and Ilocos. The
demand for labor in these farms was attributed to the exit of the Japanese work force from the
plantations. The immigrants from Philippines mostly comprised of a subgroup known as Sakadas, who
entered Hawaii as U.S. nationals. However, they did not enjoy ... Show more content on

About 3 million undocumented immigrants applied for amnesty out of which 2.7 were legalized under

saw Congress table a bill in the house that was later signed by President Bush in 1990 and currently
known as the Immigration act of 1990. This Act laid emphasis on increasing the numerical limit of
immigrants, revise the preference system, introduce diversity program and give a higher priority to
employment based immigration. This law introduced an annual level of 675,000 immigrants per year
in 1995 that included 480,000 for family related, 140,000 for employment based and 55, 000 for
diversity immigrants.
The Diversity Lottery Program has facilitated the admission of 50,000 immigrants from countries that

Jean Segura s Lesson In Fastball
Things looked bleak from the get go with this one, as the threat of rain made it s presence felt,
postponing the start of this one by 30 minutes. That didn t stop Jean Segura from doing what he s been
doing, as he stayed hot looking for the franchise record for hits in a season. Segura led things off with
a single, setting the table for the D backs to strike first and maybe end this thing before the rain had a
chance. Chris Owings obliged, moving Segura to 2nd with a single of his own. After an excellent
double steal, Goldy was in prime position to get the team on the board and he did, lining a hard
grounder into deep shortstop. Espinosa had no shot at home plate, and threw onto first for the first out
of the inning and a 1 0 D backs lead. That was it however, as Castillo and Drury flew out and struck
out respectively to strand Owings at 2nd. Still not a bad way to start the game. Shelby Miller s
performance today was what we expected from him after the blockbuster trade brought him over in

The Gutenberg Bible Essay
Created by Johannes Gutenberg, The Gutenberg Bible was the first mass produced book through the
use of a moveable printer. Known for its artistic Latin writing, the Bible only has forty nine copies
remaining, one residing at the Harry Ransom Center at The University of Texas at Austin. The
Gutenberg Bible exhibits religious qualities from the message, directly from God, and the original
purpose of the creation of the Bible.
A vital component of The Gutenberg Bible is the origin of the divine message in the religious text. The
basis of religion is when someone believes or follows something or someone devotedly. Therefore in
Christianity, anyone who receives and lives by the word of God will be granted eternal life in heaven.

The Gutenberg Bible s purpose was to spread the message of God that can view through the mass
production of the Bible for the first time in history. Due to the moveable printer, the Bible were more
accessible to a larger audience. According to Mark 16:15, And He said to them, Go into all the world

The Effects of Nature or Nurture on Early Human...
Human development is a very complex process from conception to death. There has been a long
debate on whether human development is determined by nature or nurture. If their growths were all
guided by nature only, they would all be born with a mind of blank slate . This means that they do not
have any inborn ability to do anything when they are born. On the other hand, if their growth was
determined by nurture only, it would mean that they were fully equipped with all the skills they need
in their lives when we are born. In other words, all the physical and mental skills they have right now
would have been inherited from their parents and the environment they grow up in has no effect. This

This is because they are born with the same set of muscles and bones that they learn how to use the
nature part of motor development. However, it is important to notice that the rate of learning these
motor skills differ due to the nurture side of development. For example, an infant that practices
walking with its parent may start walking on its own earlier than another infant that received no help.
Also, an infant that receives much visual and auditory stimulation, such as playing with toys, develops
its motor skills faster than an infant that received none.
While the baby continues to learn how to move around on its own, it also learns how to talk an
extremely important skill. Speech development is also determined by both nature and nurture. All
babies that are born with no birth defects are equipped with physiological requirements for speech:
lungs, voice box, and mouth. They also need a properly working brain and nerves to control these
body parts and to mentally form sentences. These form the nature part of the speech development
because they are the things that the babies are born with. However, they could be useless if the baby
does not learn how to use them properly, and this is where the nurture part of the speech development
comes in. A baby that is constantly spoken to by others learns how to talk faster. In an opposite case, a

Similarities And Differences Between The Giver Book And Movie
The Giver is both best selling book by Lois Lowery and a major motion picture. They are both
centered on the same storyline and character but also have some major differences. The movie (and
the book) takes place in the confines of the community, something that started after the ruin, when all
memories were erased and everyone became equal. (Krule, 2014). The book and the movie and the
book are very different in many ways such as the plot, characters and concepts. The book and movie
are more different than they are similar, although there are a few similarities.
The plot of the book and movie follows a similar story line although there are many minor differences.
In both the book and movie the protagonist, Jonas, is about to go through some major changes. The
Elders of the community are selecting job positions for his class. At the selection ceremony the elders
announce each kid s job positon individually. The elders skip Jonas and move on to the next child.
This part of the story is very similar in the book and the movie, Jonas is selected to be The Receiver of
Memories , his job is to receive all the memories of the past and gain wisdom to help the elders of the
community. Some other main plot points that stay the same are Jonas training. The Giver transmits
memories of things such as color and war and emotions, things that no longer exist in the community.
The final major event is very different between the book and the movie. In the book, after learning
about much of the past, Jonas decides that he needs to leave the community to Elsewhere to release
the memories back to the community. In the movie, however, Jonas decided to leave the community
on a spur of the moment decision with little planning or thought. This is very different from the book
where Jonas escape was carefully planned out. One thing that is the same about Jonas escape is that he
takes Gabriel, a baby that is about to be released (Euthanized). The ending of both the book and movie
are the same, Jonas leaves the community and finds a house in Elsewhere . Neither works give much
closure as to what happens, the movie and book leave the reader to decide how the story ends.
The characters of The Giver are very similar but also

What Is A Political Allegory In Lord Of The Flies
World War II caused an amount of destruction and harm that no human being had ever seen before,
many were disgusted and outraged by the results of this war. It was a very memorable event; one that
authors tend to write about a lot, even to this day. One author in particular, WIlliam Golding, uses his
world famous piece of literature Lord of the Flies as a political allegory to World War 2. In his classic
novel, he shows little boys who are flown out to avoid the danger of being bombed and become
trapped on an island. While they are trapped, the boys develop separate ways of leading each other
which leads to conflict and violence, similar to the governments in which were clashing with each
other during World War 2 at the time. Through the differences of these boys, Golding shows to us how
they relate to the major leaders of World War 2 (Hitler, Franklin Roosevelt, and Neville Chamberlain),
and how democracy is the best way to govern people. Hitler was the ruler of Germany during World
War II, and he ruled over his people in fear. Jack is commonly described to being similar if not exactly
like Hitler. Golding leaves many examples in the novel to show how Jack and Hitler are alike. Both of
them promised their citizens a better life, they both promise their country meat (Golding 140), and
they both lead as a dictator, taking their power with force and leading as the only chief of the state.

Emily Dickinson s A Certain Slant of Light Analysis Essay
1
Emily Dickinson s There s a certain Slant of light
In her poem, There s a certain Slant of light, Emily Dickinson uses metaphors and imagery to convey
the feeling of solemnity and despair at winter s twilight. The slanted light that she sees, is a metaphor
for her battle with depression. Anyone who is familiar with Dickinson s background will have a better
understanding of what she is trying to say in this poem. Dickinson was known as a recluse and spent
most of her life isolated from the outside world. The few people that she did come in contact with over
the years are said to have had a major impact on her poetry. Although, her main muse of her work
seems to be despair and internal conflict. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If we re feeling down, like the speaker of this poem, we see the world as how we feel inside; things
look unpleasant, and grey and dismal. We re unable to see a ray of hope that is coming through the
window in the form of sunshine. In the fourth stanza, when death, or it as the speaker calls it, comes
everything listens. When someone dies, those still on this earth sometimes experience stillness in
nature, as if the world is on hold and listening to us. In Dickinson s poem the stillness comes from the
slant of light, and the landscape and shadows listen and figuratively hold their breath. The landscape
and shadows are personified in this stanza. The capitalization of Landscape and Shadows gives the
impression that the speaker is referring to someone she knows. The mood here changes quite a bit
compared to the first three stanzas of this poem. You get a sense of anticipation instead of despair, and
the oppression that the speaker has felt has lifted and now she s feeling light and maybe some what
alluring. In the final two lines of the poem, the poet uses sort of a morbid imagery. When it goes, tis
like the Distance, On the look of Death. (15 16) Dead people have a distant look to them since the life
in their being is gone somewhere else. We also see the exit of winter light at the end of the day in the
same distant way we might see some deaths. Death is

The Life of Artemisia Gentileschi
Life of Artemisia Gentileschi
Italian Baroque painter, Artemisia Gentileschi was born in Rome on July 8th, 1593. Her father Orazio
Gentileschi, who was a painter himself, introduced Artemisia to the art of painting by giving her
lessons in his studio. At an early age, Artemisia displayed her interest in art and it wasn t long until her
father noticed potential in his daughter enough that she would be able to make a name for herself in
the male dominated career. Artemisia had the desire to follow in her father s footsteps, it was then that
Orazio encouraged her to follow her dreams and decided to begin training her as an artist. After
collaborating on a project with the painter Agostino Tassi, Orazio hired him to tutor Artemisia on
perspective due to his skills with landscape. During one of their lessons, Tassi took advantage of
Artemisia and raped her. In their time, if a woman was raped, the man who was responsible had to
marry her. I find it odd knowing that back then it was considered normal for a man to rape a woman
that he wanted to be with and marrying her after. Sounds to me like women had no choice, no say on
who they wanted to be in relationship with. Sadly, in many cases the men who committed the rape
would flee from the situation to avoid getting married after getting what they wanted. Even though the
women weren t at fault, if unmarried women weren t virgins they were seen as tainted, or no good for
another man. After the incident had occurred, Tassi had

Feminism in Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel Essay
Feminism in Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel
There are many different definitions of feminism. Some people regard feminism as the idea that
women deserve the same amount of respect that men deserve. There are the other schools of feminist
thought that hold women superior to men. Yet another believes that the gender roles controlling
women are artificially created and not innate knowledge, and thus men and women are equals with
only history the determining factor and how gender equality is established. There are clear feminist
overtones in Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. Esquivel pointes to a more radical

Mama Elena goes on, for better or worse, attempting the best she can to raise a family in the
tumultuous time of the Mexican revolution. She struggles against her rebellious daughter in her own
attempt to keep her family s heritage and traditions alive. Not only does she raise a family but she also
runs the ranch on which the live and on derive their sustenance. Early on in the novel we see that
Esquivel presents a character that deserves the same amount of respect normally giving to a male
character in this same role. By placing this normally male role in a woman Esquivel questions the
typical role of the woman in a home of just raising children by bestowing additional responsibilities.
We see elsewhere in the novel the strength in Gertrudis, Tita s sister. Gertrudis escapes the ranch after
reacting mysteriously to one of Tita s recipes. She runs away with a rebel soldier, works in a brothel at
the Mexico Texas border, and eventually returns to the ranch as a general in the revolutionary army.
Here we witness the creation of a second strong female character. When we first see Gertrudis we see
just another female character. But after her return we find that she has become a leader of in the
revolution. Again Esquivel takes a potion that is typically male associated and fills that role with and
equally respectable female character.
There is then the focal character, Tita. Tita is the pivotal character in defining Like Water for

The emperor loved his daughter and felt sorry for her...he arranged(where the idea of arranged
marriage in Japan comes from?) for her to marry Kengyuu(Altair), a prince who lived across the river
of heaven . As the marriage of Orihime Boshii and Kengyuu blossomed, Orihime Boshii neglected her
weaving and this upset and worried her father. The emperor finally decided to separate the couple by
means of the river of heaven , however, for one day out of the year(7th day of the 7th month) the
couple would be allowed to be together. On that day a boatman(the moon) would ferry Orihime Boshii
across the river to see her husband Kengyuu...the boatman would only come to ferry Orihime Boshii
across the river of heaven if she had finished her weaving...id she had not finished her weaving it
would rain and the river would be too flooded to cross by boat. The gods took compassion on Orihime
Boshii and allowed for a group of Kasasagi(magpies) to fly into the milky way and make a magpie
bridge for Orihime Boshii to cross over to the other side and see Kengyuu.
Tanabata, the festival based on this legend is celebrated every year on the 7th day of the 7th month of
the Japanese lunar calendar. During this festival people write wishes to the gods on strips of paper, tie
these strips of paper to freshly cut bamboo, eat seasonal vegetables, and decorate horse and cow
figures made out of straw or water oats. Over the years water purification ceremonies, a

  • 2. Slavery In Cincinnati Cincinnati is a beautiful city on the Ohio River in southern Ohio that has a very rich history. The city was founded in 1788 and soon blossomed into a thriving city. One important part of Cincinnati s history was its involvement in the underground railroad and abolitionists. Based on the Ohio River it posed as a perfect place to cross on the way to freedom. It also was close to the border with the south during the civil war, causing it as a marker of entrance into the northern part of the united states during the war. Cincinnati was a important part of the underground railroad, abolitionist movements, and the fight to end slavery. One of the more famous oppositions of the abolition of slavery in Cincinnati was the Cincinnati Riots of 1829. Cincinnati was full of irish immigrants and they disliked the competition they received from the African American community in the area. Irish attacked African Americans in the area trying to get them to leave the area, leaving more jobs for the immigrants. Some of the African Americans left, while others stayed and fought for their jobs and lives. Another attack occurred later in 1836, this time attacking a printing press that was publishing a anti slavery newspaper. A mob destroyed the press, throwing it out into the streets in attempt to deter the publisher, soon though he continued to publish his newspaper. The Ohio river was a prominent part of railroad in Cincinnati. It was referred to the jordan river by conductors and passengers. It was common to talk in code using biblical names on the railroad and among conductors, such as calling Canada the promised land . The fundamental employees and supervisors have the low level of attitudes and behaviours to support workplace safety, and the company of Sopranos does not have the effective mechanism and physical infrastructure facilities to support the workplace safety mission. According to the identification of Aupperle, Carroll and Hatfield (1985), the corporation has various legal responsibilities to support the workplace safety, in order to further protect the interests of existing employees in the workplace. To be more specific, to begin with, the most important law for workplace safety is the Workplace Health and Safety (WHS). According to the description of Hart (2010), it is essential to create a safe work environment to be the foundation of the success of the business. At the same time, the high level of workplace safety also can be referred as the effective method to retain talents and maximise the productivity in the workplace. • 5. Native American Art Of Navajo Blanket Weaving Essay Native American Art of the Navajo Blanket Weaving Ingrid Anderson Governors State University Native American Art of the Navajo Blanket Weaving Native Americans are the indigenous people of the North American continent and the cultural traditions and art forms are unique to these regional groups. The people in these groups have several names and the first adopted name Indian by Spanish explorers proved erroneous, however, now accepted names include either American Indian or Native American. I will refer to these groups as Native Americans or by their tribal affiliation. There are diverse tribal groups original to North America who lived on the Great Plains, in the Woodlands, on the Northwest coast, and in the Southeast or the Southwest regions. Various Native American tribes created art forms such as the Apache, Cherokee, Pueblo, and Hopi communities. In my research, I found that the Navajo also contributed in many ways to Native American art through making jewelry, beading, drawing, painting, sculpting, carving, and weaving. These art works provided their tribe notoriety with countless years of experience through their creativity and sense of design , lending to an astonishing volume and variety of artwork which has created a lasting legacy , per NativeAmerican Art.com (2010). Understandably, art comes in various forms and from various cultures, but the Native American Navajo tribe contributed vastly and merits mention for its beautiful contributions. Therefore, I ... • 7. Comparison Of Aldous Huxley s Nineteen Eighty-Four George Orwell also took influence from authors who were active in his own lifetime, such as English author Aldous Huxley. Orwell s novel Nineteen Eighty Four most commonly gets compared to Aldous Huxley s novel Brave New World, which was originally published in 1932, seventeen years before Orwell published his own anti totalitarian work. Comparable to Nineteen Eighty Four, Brave New World is a dystopian novel in which a political agenda is discussed via a fabricated government. However, while similarities can be drawn, the two differ in their content. In Brave New World, Huxley s fictional society is controlled by drugs and efforts to distract its citizens who are immersed in a world of technology that could only have been dreamed of at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the same fashion that he took influence from the writings of other authors before him, authors in the generations after him have done the same. Margaret Atwood, whose novel The Handmaid s Tale (1985) has sparked political interest in its recent resurgence much as Orwell s works have, was inspired by Orwell s ideologies, mainly those represented in Animal Farm. As previously mentioned, Orwell is no novice at creating dystopian societies, a skill that Atwood, too, shows in The Handmaid s Tale, the plot of which centers around the handmaids (women) being used strictly for reproductive purposes. The more substantial influence, however, is the use of satire in literature. In Animal Farm, Orwell created a politically satirical society of animals meant to represent the regime under Joseph Stalin, whom he opposed. In The Handmaid s Tale, however, Atwood used satire for social justices rather than a political agenda, though the two often coincide. Atwood takes a dystopian view of a world in which women are used as objects to keep the population alive and uses it to make readers understand why feminism is needed; if women are not allowed to choose what they are able to do with their bodies, be it abortion or birth control, they will soon only be seen as a means of ... • 9. The Basketball Association And The Nba The National Basketball Association, or the NBA, is a men s professional basketball league in the USA. The National Basketball Association was born in 1949 after the Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League merged as one. Maurice Podoloff was elected head of the new league that consisted of seventeen teams which came from cities and towns all across the country. The NBA did not have a great start with its teams dwindling to only eight teams in the 1950s. At this point, the league transformed the game with the addition of the shot clock. The shot clock in the NBA is 24 seconds, meaning the offensive team has 24 seconds from the time they inbound the ball until the ball hits the rim on their side of the court. This addition increased the pace of the game and made it more fun for fans to watch. Their transformation worked, and the league returned to a financially stable one in the 1960/70s. Today, the NBA has millions of fans from all walks of life, all over the world. The league now consists of 30 teams from various states in North America as well as one team from Canada. The teams are divided into two conferences and then three divisions of five teams each. To play the sport of basketball there are players; five on the court at a time, coaches, a basketball, two hoops, high top shoes to protect player s ankles, and a court with specific lines painted out to represent boundaries. Dollar General, like most other companies send their stores inventory each week to replenish supply. But unlike some of those other companies after working for Dollar General I realized that the way they handled stock supply and inventory shipment wasn t very efficient compared to some of those other companies using inventory technologies. After doing some research I discovered what I think is actually occurring at Dollar General stores when it comes to shipment of inventory. The line chart below provided by ScienceDirect (Quansheng, 2015), shows how inventory replenishment effectiveness rates impact retailer s cost. • 34. Similarities And Differences Between The Giver Book And Movie The Giver is both best selling book by Lois Lowery and a major motion picture. They are both centered on the same storyline and character but also have some major differences. The movie (and the book) takes place in the confines of the community, something that started after the ruin, when all memories were erased and everyone became equal. (Krule, 2014). The book and the movie and the book are very different in many ways such as the plot, characters and concepts. The book and movie are more different than they are similar, although there are a few similarities. The plot of the book and movie follows a similar story line although there are many minor differences. In both the book and movie the protagonist, Jonas, is about to go through some major changes. The Elders of the community are selecting job positions for his class. At the selection ceremony the elders announce each kid s job positon individually. The elders skip Jonas and move on to the next child. This part of the story is very similar in the book and the movie, Jonas is selected to be The Receiver of Memories , his job is to receive all the memories of the past and gain wisdom to help the elders of the community. Some other main plot points that stay the same are Jonas training. The Giver transmits memories of things such as color and war and emotions, things that no longer exist in the community. The final major event is very different between the book and the movie. In the book, after learning about much of the past, Jonas decides that he needs to leave the community to Elsewhere to release the memories back to the community. In the movie, however, Jonas decided to leave the community on a spur of the moment decision with little planning or thought. This is very different from the book where Jonas escape was carefully planned out. One thing that is the same about Jonas escape is that he takes Gabriel, a baby that is about to be released (Euthanized). The ending of both the book and movie are the same, Jonas leaves the community and finds a house in Elsewhere . Neither works give much closure as to what happens, the movie and book leave the reader to decide how the story ends. The characters of The Giver are very similar but also ... • 36. What Is A Political Allegory In Lord Of The Flies World War II caused an amount of destruction and harm that no human being had ever seen before, many were disgusted and outraged by the results of this war. It was a very memorable event; one that authors tend to write about a lot, even to this day. One author in particular, WIlliam Golding, uses his world famous piece of literature Lord of the Flies as a political allegory to World War 2. In his classic novel, he shows little boys who are flown out to avoid the danger of being bombed and become trapped on an island. While they are trapped, the boys develop separate ways of leading each other which leads to conflict and violence, similar to the governments in which were clashing with each other during World War 2 at the time. Through the differences of these boys, Golding shows to us how they relate to the major leaders of World War 2 (Hitler, Franklin Roosevelt, and Neville Chamberlain), and how democracy is the best way to govern people. Hitler was the ruler of Germany during World War II, and he ruled over his people in fear. Jack is commonly described to being similar if not exactly like Hitler. Golding leaves many examples in the novel to show how Jack and Hitler are alike. Both of them promised their citizens a better life, they both promise their country meat (Golding 140), and they both lead as a dictator, taking their power with force and leading as the only chief of the state. Jack is described in the book as a terror (Golding 189) and Hitler has been ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Emily Dickinson s A Certain Slant of Light Analysis Essay 1 Emily Dickinson s There s a certain Slant of light In her poem, There s a certain Slant of light, Emily Dickinson uses metaphors and imagery to convey the feeling of solemnity and despair at winter s twilight. The slanted light that she sees, is a metaphor for her battle with depression. Anyone who is familiar with Dickinson s background will have a better understanding of what she is trying to say in this poem. Dickinson was known as a recluse and spent most of her life isolated from the outside world. The few people that she did come in contact with over the years are said to have had a major impact on her poetry. Although, her main muse of her work seems to be despair and internal conflict. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If we re feeling down, like the speaker of this poem, we see the world as how we feel inside; things look unpleasant, and grey and dismal. We re unable to see a ray of hope that is coming through the window in the form of sunshine. In the fourth stanza, when death, or it as the speaker calls it, comes everything listens. When someone dies, those still on this earth sometimes experience stillness in nature, as if the world is on hold and listening to us. In Dickinson s poem the stillness comes from the slant of light, and the landscape and shadows listen and figuratively hold their breath. The landscape and shadows are personified in this stanza. The capitalization of Landscape and Shadows gives the impression that the speaker is referring to someone she knows. The mood here changes quite a bit compared to the first three stanzas of this poem. You get a sense of anticipation instead of despair, and the oppression that the speaker has felt has lifted and now she s feeling light and maybe some what alluring. In the final two lines of the poem, the poet uses sort of a morbid imagery. When it goes, tis like the Distance, On the look of Death. (15 16) Dead people have a distant look to them since the life in their being is gone somewhere else. We also see the exit of winter light at the end of the day in the same distant way we might see some deaths. Death is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Life of Artemisia Gentileschi Life of Artemisia Gentileschi Italian Baroque painter, Artemisia Gentileschi was born in Rome on July 8th, 1593. Her father Orazio Gentileschi, who was a painter himself, introduced Artemisia to the art of painting by giving her lessons in his studio. At an early age, Artemisia displayed her interest in art and it wasn t long until her father noticed potential in his daughter enough that she would be able to make a name for herself in the male dominated career. Artemisia had the desire to follow in her father s footsteps, it was then that Orazio encouraged her to follow her dreams and decided to begin training her as an artist. After collaborating on a project with the painter Agostino Tassi, Orazio hired him to tutor Artemisia on perspective due to his skills with landscape. During one of their lessons, Tassi took advantage of Artemisia and raped her. In their time, if a woman was raped, the man who was responsible had to marry her. I find it odd knowing that back then it was considered normal for a man to rape a woman that he wanted to be with and marrying her after. Sounds to me like women had no choice, no say on who they wanted to be in relationship with. Sadly, in many cases the men who committed the rape would flee from the situation to avoid getting married after getting what they wanted. Even though the women weren t at fault, if unmarried women weren t virgins they were seen as tainted, or no good for another man. After the incident had occurred, Tassi had ... • 39. Feminism in Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel Essay Feminism in Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel There are many different definitions of feminism. Some people regard feminism as the idea that women deserve the same amount of respect that men deserve. There are the other schools of feminist thought that hold women superior to men. Yet another believes that the gender roles controlling women are artificially created and not innate knowledge, and thus men and women are equals with only history the determining factor and how gender equality is established. There are clear feminist overtones in Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. Esquivel pointes to a more radical definition of feminism in Like Water for Chocolate. Mama Elena goes on, for better or worse, attempting the best she can to raise a family in the tumultuous time of the Mexican revolution. She struggles against her rebellious daughter in her own attempt to keep her family s heritage and traditions alive. Not only does she raise a family but she also runs the ranch on which the live and on derive their sustenance. Early on in the novel we see that Esquivel presents a character that deserves the same amount of respect normally giving to a male character in this same role. By placing this normally male role in a woman Esquivel questions the typical role of the woman in a home of just raising children by bestowing additional responsibilities. We see elsewhere in the novel the strength in Gertrudis, Tita s sister. Gertrudis escapes the ranch after reacting mysteriously to one of Tita s recipes. She runs away with a rebel soldier, works in a brothel at the Mexico Texas border, and eventually returns to the ranch as a general in the revolutionary army. Here we witness the creation of a second strong female character. When we first see Gertrudis we see just another female character. But after her return we find that she has become a leader of in the revolution. Again Esquivel takes a potion that is typically male associated and fills that role with and equally respectable female character. There is then the focal character, Tita. Tita is the pivotal character in defining Like Water for Chocolate as a feminist ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
