One Day Of The Life Of Ivan Denisovich By Aleksandr...
The novel, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, depicts how prisoners
endure and survive life in the gulag camp. Solzhenitsyn suggests that the prisoners ability of surviving
in the camp depends on how they view the work they are assigned. Within the camp a majority of the
prisoners time is spent dedicated to work assigned to them from the guards. Throughout the novel it is
suggested that those who have a good work ethic are more likely to survive than those who do not.
The ways in which they can survive include being hard working, focusing intently on the work and
taking on multiple job roles. This allows them to gain favours or an offering from fellow prisoners.
This is principally shown through the two contrasting characters, Ivan Denisovich and Fetiuokov.
Ivan Denisovich, also referred to as Shukhov, is described as extremely hard working and is always
occupied with jobs that may at first appear arbitrary. Although they appear to be arbitrary they are
actually carefully and selectively chosen according to what Shukhov will gain in return from
completing them. Ivan Denisovich is thought to be one of the best workers in the camp because of his
positive attitude towards work. Whilst working on a wall there was need of a bricklayer so Shukhov
thought he might as well be one because he believes that if you can do two things with your hands,
you ll soon pick up another ten. (Pg. 79). Through these quotes there is a sense of positivity to his

Singapore s Globalized And Diversified Economy
Singapore Known as one of the Four Asian Tigers, Singapore s globalized and diversified economy is
only behind Hong Kong s. That title has been achieved due to its market economy, A highly

Pros And Cons Of The EU
CONSIDERATION EUROPEAN UNION
__________________________________________________________________________
The EU brings both positive and negative sides with it. For example, the Netherlands should keep the
Euro or go back to the guilder. The statement is as follows: should the Netherlands be part of the EU
or should they leave?
__________________________________________________________________________
For the EU the European Union stands for power. If you look at a country from the European Union,
there is probably little or no attention paid to that country, even if there are any problems. Take for
example Greece, they have had a crisis for years. By the partnership of the EU this country supported
Greece. Together we are strong and we can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As countries such as Greece that can be helped by the power of the EU and the cooperation between
the countries, but on the other hand, would be leaving the EU ensure that can save money because the
Netherlands no longer have to contribute to the enforcement of EU power.
Also is an advantage of the EU that it contributes to peace, by among other things the possibility of a
free trade. But on the other hand, the Dutch economy will grow sharply if the EU would leave, that
according to a British study.
The EU has also caused a discussion between the euro and guilder in Netherlands. Namely by use of
the euro is easier to compare products and prices, the EU has a strong standing Joint currency, and that
is an advantage during a financial crisis. But if the Netherlands Guilder Netherlands would enter
would implement its own policy and adjust this to our own economy without having to worry to the
effects of the rest of Europe. This makes clear that the EU both advantages and disadvantages for
Netherlands.

India s The Partition Of India
The partition of India is one of the defining chapters in India s entire history. Although many different
reasons caused the partition, political factors were a key player in bringing about this monumental
change in India s borders. The pre existing communal differences between Hindus and Muslims grew
as a result of the fears of both groups losing power and giving up control to the other. The partition
which was supposed to grant freedom and independence for all Indians resulted in creating a deeper
hatred and animosity which would cost countless lives through riots, rape, and mass murder for
decades to come. Gandhi said in actual life, it is impossible to separate us into two nations. We are not
two nations. Every Moslem will have a Hindu name if he goes back far enough in his family history.
Every Moslem is merely a Hindu who has accepted Islam. That does not create nationality. . . . We in
India have a common culture. In the North, Hindi and Urdu are understood by both Hindus and
Moslems. In Madras, Hindus and Moslems speak Tamil, and in Bengal, they both speak Bengali and
neither Hindi nor Urdu. When communal riots take place, they are always provoked by incidents over
cows and by religious processions. That means that it is our superstitions that create the trouble and
not our separate nationalities. He tried to unite all Indians by showing them that having different
religions does not separate Indians and the only path to true independence would be to come

My Job At The City Of Irvine Right After College
The views between following one s needs and surrendering one s self can clash under particular
conditions such as the environment and yet experienced in various manners. I first started working for
the City of Irvine right after I graduated College 2014. Having the opportunity to work for a city such
as Irvine right after college, I felt so honored and over joyed. Excited to have a job, working for a
beautiful city and enjoying every second of every day and the new challenges and experiences. This
employment opportunity allowed me to be paid above the minimum wage, though I was not interested
in the pay. It also allowed me to make a difference in the people around the community, which to me,
is a value to me. I need to have value within my career choice in addition to and being able to enjoy
my daily tasks. I took this job for the reasons of being qualified for the position available, and the
possibility where this opportunity can lead.. Overtime, I began to feel overworked and under paid.
This included 10 hour days for 5 days a week, including the weekend shifts and was expected to
perform tasks that were not included in our job description. Duties such as janitorial, while those
performing these services actually received more pay, and yet, they do not have the additional
responsibilities to enforce policy. The other payment issue that arose was not being allocated the
correct hourly rate for over a year of employment. These items soon became issues that left me

I Was Waiting At Line For Lunch
I was waiting in line for lunch. I had just left from combo. At this camp my combo was a jazz
ensemble that actually sounded amazing together. None of my friends were around me in line so I just
waited quietly. I heard someone behind start talking about there combo. They said, Ugh, we have Sam
again this year. Why does he have to be so bad? And sigh, now we have Rami, he is... I turned around
instantly and asked, Rami is what? He paused while his friends laughed at him. He was literally and
figuratively talking behind my back. Brian, the person who talked behind my back, grabbed me by my
waste and attempted to apologize while I thought to myself, Whatever, just sleep with one eye open.

The shame and embarrassment I felt stuck with me for a few hours until I got over it. One night we
had a campfire. Towards the end the lower campers were dismissed and the counselor s told us about
what was planned. We were going to play something called senior snap. You had to snap in front of
your target then sing Roar by Katy Perry while pretending to be a mime stuck in a box and then hope
that no one saw you. If someone saw you then you would be out. However, if you got the person out
you would have their target. You could also be immune to being snapped if you wore an outfit that
was stated on the snap schedule. The outfits got increasingly harder as the camp went on. The only
way to get someone out in a costume was to snap them out on the green, a large open field. The
counselor s had written in secret who each person had and we had to decode it. Once I had decoded
my sheet I had found out of course, that I had the one person I didn t want. I had Brian. I had
strategized multiple situations on how to get Brian out but they all ended in failure. Of course he was
always with people because he was one of the popular people on camp. It all came down to one fateful
afternoon. It was really hot out and Brian was walking back from combo by himself. I saw him on the
green and didn t see anyone else. I sprinted from behind him and snapped right in his face. I was so
happy that I started laughing when I

Using Social Media for More than Being Social
As someone who has lived here all of my life, I feel I can confidently say, Florida is a strange place.
No, not because extended family in other states think we visit Disney World every weekend or wrestle
alligators in our spare time, but for other reasons. For the record, I have not been to Disney since I was
about twelve and could not be paid enough to even touch an alligator, but I have seen firsthand just
how many strange people are here. Thankfully, there are hundreds of other brilliant people such as
famed author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, actor Wesley Snipes, and physicist George Smoot, just to
name a few, call Florida home to balance out many of the crazies. You don t believe me though when I
say that there are some strange people who live here? Take a visit to the South Florida Sun Sentinel
Newspaper s FloriDUH blog on their website, and see for yourself. Here are two recent noteworthy
cases:
Palm Coast police recently investigated a complaint and found a man at the scene whom they
interrogated, and was then blamed for throwing eggs and potatoes at police, after they found an egg in
his pocket (Readout, 2015).
A Lee County teacher was found guilty of DUI after driving his truck into a ditch with an elevated
blood alcohol level...all while wearing a t shirt from the high school where he taught drivers education
at that is (Bevis, 2015).

Industrialization Dbq Essay
During the nineteenth century, the Industrial Revolution began to replace agriculture goods with those
of manufactured goods. With this revolution came the implementation of new technology, new social
classes, and social theories. In England, the Industrial Revolution had taken root much faster than
continental Europe, particularly in Manchester. A leading textile manufacturing center, Manchester
soon attained a mechanized cotton mill in 1780. With this increased capacity for workers, Manchester
s population increased quite significantly. The census of 1851 revealed there to be over 300,000
citizens were previously in 1750 there were 18,000 citizens. The increase in population mostly came
from immigrants and the working class. The rapid growth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Manchester was overcrowded and cramped. Manchester grew rapidly from the 1750 s to the 1850 s
population and infrastructure wise. Manchester during the 1750 s was relatively small compared to the
size of the city during the 1850 s. The city had nearly quadrupled in size (Doc. 1). Assuming
Manchester circa 1750 could support 18,000 people comfortably but circa 1850 the city has to support
300,000 people without nearly enough space. This suggests the population per area density increased
substantially resulting in overcrowding. Robert Southey, an English Romantic poet describes
Manchester as a crowded city with buildings packed together. He also notes Manchester is the second
largest city in England both size and population wise (Doc. 2). This gives an account of how cramped
living conditions were in the cities from a person s perspective. Southey has a negative view of city
life and thus goes on to write about it in Colloquies on the Progress and Prospects of Society. This is
later refuted by Thomas B. Macaulay, a member of Parliament and historian. Macaulay states Southey
has an unrealistic view of the world where peasants frolick in the countryside without a care in the
world. Macaulay believes city life is better for people because they have food, shelter, and healthcare
(Doc. 3). Macaulay is a member of Parliament and as such he must come from a certain income group
mostly represented in the upper quartile of

Larkin Agnosticism
Agnosticism as a Product of Fear
Nothing is so much to be feared as fear. Atheism may comparatively be popular with God himself.
Henry David Thoreau.
The poetry of Philip Larkin has led numerous scholars to debate about the poet s true attitude towards
religion. Many of Larkin s poems seem to be unambiguous, emanating a strong feeling of pessimism
and denouncement to religion and faith. The doubts and uncertainties Larkin felt towards religion
reverberate throughout his work, resulting in most scholars to consider him an atheist. However, in
perhaps his most famous and widely anthologized poem, Church Going, there seems to be not so
much an expression of outright skepticism towards Christianity, as a desperate struggle to ... Show

Their faith is presented as being heavily deceptive, and their emotions described as deep hoarse tears,
as if a kind of dumb / And idiot child within them survives (14 15). The portrayal of these religious
people presents in the mind of the reader an image of a completely ignorant dunce, or even a jackass,
whereas describing their tears as hoarse, was a homophone likely chosen with malicious intent. Larkin
s fear of death contributes not only to his depiction of religion, but also his struggle to accept it, seeing
as he viewed religion unable to save people from suffering and death. The poem Aubade describes at
length the speaker s struggle and fear of death and how he feels religion in the past or rational thinking
in the modern world of science can by no means drive away... their imminent death (Bao 189). The
speaker is paralyzed by the thought of unresting death that is a whole day nearer every day he comes
home from work (5). In the extremely morbid last stanza of the poem the speaker proclaims his belief
that no trick dispels death, and that religion used to try (22), further showing that the only real obstacle
between Larkin and faith is his inability to accept death as part of the divine plan (Schray 56).
Considering Larkin to be an atheist however is not the most accurate representation of the poet, and
his frequent use of religion, as dire as it may be, indicates a more complicated notion.
The poem Church Going is about a man visiting

Poetry Essay
Response to Death When someone is close to their deathbed, he/she often ask themselves similar
questions. Have I lived my life to the fullest? Am I ready to go on? Do I have any regrets? Other
people who care about us probably ask the same questions, but answer them selfishly to convince us
to stay or to fight. Ultimately it is up to the person on their deathbed to answer these questions
regardless of what their family and friends wish. Emily Dickinson, Dylan Thomas, and William Carlos
Williams have all written poems about death, but with varying points of view. Dickinson writes about
the acceptance of death, while Thomas writes about the fight for life, but it is ... Show more content on

As the narrator begs his father to fight to stay alive, he brings up example after example of various
people who do not give up on their deathbeds. He compares these examples to his father to show how
he feels and how he looks up to his father. He first describes how wise men at their end know dark is
right, // Because their words had forked no lightning they // Do not go gentle into that good night
(Thomas 4). These men understand that death is natural, but they have not made their mark in the
world yet and thus try to fight death until they have. His second example is essentially the same, but
with good men instead. His third example is about Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, //
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way (Thomas 10). These are the men who took life for
granted and do not realize how unfulfilled their lives are until they are on their deathbeds. All of these
examples are the son s way of pleading with his father to hold on. His final example asks his father to
try and be happy. He says, Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight // Blind eyes could
blaze like meteors and be gay (Thomas 13). He is trying to encourage his father and tell him that being
blind is not a good enough reason to simply give up on life and wait for death. His last words to his
father are quite moving as he says, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray, // Do not go
gentle into that good night. // Rage, rage against the dying of the light (Thomas 17). The son does not
care if his father curses or blesses him so long as he fights to live and does not give up. In a way, he is
behaving quite selfishly because it is not his life to dictate, but at the same time, it is a clear depiction
of how frightening death is for everyone, regardless of your

The Status Of Women In Society
The status of women in a society is a significant reflection of the level of social justice in that society.
In the literature, women s status is commonly described in terms of their education, income,
employment, health, fertility, etc. somewhere it has shown thattheir roles within family, community
and society also. But if we are talking about tribal communities, the role playing by women is crucial
and substantial. According to the Oxford dictionary a tribe is a group of people in a primitive or
barbarous stage of development acknowledging the authority of a chief and usually regarding
themselves as having a common ancestor . Tribalare assumed the original dwellers of this

terms of high concentration of indigenous Tribal population which is just after the African continent.
Women play a crucial role in this communitybut yet their conditions are pitiable. Empowerment is an
active process enabling women to realize their full identity and power in all spheres of life
(Gnanadhas Mahalekshmi, 2011). Empowerment is a process that takes a person from a position of
powerless inaction to responsible action. The process moves through several stages from a)
participation to b) decision making to c) action and, ultimately to d) the capacity to take responsibility
for those actions. Empowerment is a complex concept and it is interpreted in many ways. It comes

Macklemore Drug Abuse
In this song, Macklemore addresses the extensive amount of drug abuse in the rap industry, and the
effect this has on its fanbase. By describing his obsession with the rap industry, along with his
personal experiences with narcotics, Macklemore provides ample explanation as to why drug abuse is
so popular among youth. Furthermore, Macklemore writes this song as a warning for those idolize

A Rock And The Attention Span
There aren t too many things I can remember very clearly, especially during elementary school. Six
years ago, everyone had the IQ of a rock and the attention span as much as three inches. However,
something I do recall was a very strange experience I don t think I can forget. At that time, I was
running for my life because someone was chasing me. Or that s what my seven year old self had
thought.
2010, first grade. That Friday was unusually hot. The sun s rays had melted all the thick blankets of
snow winter had given. Shoes shuffling on the rough blacktop, creaks from the chains of the swings,
and lots of chattering from other classmates. It s quite faint, my memory, of the how it started. During

she yelled my name across the room. Instinctively, my marker fell from my hand and my attention was
towards the door. Standing there, were two people. Two other first graders.
One girl, one boy. The boy was unfamiliar, but he had a look in his eyes, one that I can t explain. And
the girl, she was cupping her hand on her cheek. That girl standing at the door, was the same girl
chasing her prey. My teacher, off to the side, looked like disbelief has slapped her across the face.
Ironic because, the words that came out of her mouth, sounded like she was asking me if I had slapped
the girl standing at the door.
Before my mind could process the question, my eyebrows raised themselves with my eyes widened
too. Questions and other thoughts started buzzing around my empty head, not knowing where to start.
Resuming back to reality, all eyes were on me. There were only two pairs of eyes on me, but it felt a
thousand more. They were people I didn t really know. Same age as me, equal to me. So, how were
they so intimidating? My gaze dropped to the floor, feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders.
If they re the same, why couldn t my mouth move? Why couldn t I just spit it out? I figured at this
time the boy was probably her witness, and she was playing the victim. What do I say now? She s got

The Omnivore s Dilemma by Michael Pollen
Omnivores Dilemma Rhetorical Analysis
In The Omnivores Dilemma Michael Pollen s objective is address, educate and convince the reader by
analyzing our diets. He mentions we have become oblivious to what we are eating. Sometimes we
wonder where our food comes from, and what ingredients are in it. Pollan states, we would rather eat
in ignorance (11). The underlying message here is if people know what they are eating, they might not
be able to eat comfortably again. Pollan uses this message to gain the reader s attention. Pollan creates
an illustration to help the audience visualize his experience. He also implements personal anecdotes
and compare contrast techniques to effectively persuade the reader, that what they are eating is
unhealthy.
Today omnivores have a wide selection of food to choose from. It is difficult for omnivores to decide
what to eat. Pollan uses the example The koala doesn t worry about what to eat: If it looks and smells
and tastes like a eucalyptus leaf, it must be dinner (3). Pollan is using figurative language which
requires the reader to use their imagination. In addition he is referring to our alienation with food. We
can no longer pick up something without questioning what it is comprised of. Omnivores have a wide
selection of food and a koala only has one. Another comparison Pollan makes is The hunter gatherer
picking a novel mushroom off the forest floor and consulting his sense of memory to determine its
edibility . The hunter can

The Main Ideas of Enlightenment Philosophers Essay
During the Enlightenment, revolutionary thinkers called philosophes brought about new ideas as to
how to better understand and improve their society. They were all modern thinkers and had the best
interests of society in mind. Although each philosoph had his or her own ideas, they all centered
around one main theme: equality and human freedom. One famous influential philosopher was John
Locke. Locke was born in England in the mid 17th century and lived through both the English Civil

Only two religions allowed in a population, Voltaire says, would create animosity and competition
between the two groups for power. But if all religions are tolerated, accepted, and represented, then
peace will be prominent and government will function much for efficiently and to the benefit of all of
the people. Everyone s rights will be represented because all of the focus will not just be on one or two
groups of people but a multitude of groups, creating religious equality for all. Called the Father of
Modern Economics, Adam Smith was an enormous advocate for private markets. He supported an
economic system based on the decision making by individuals instead of the government. Smith felt
that no one person or a group is fit to make decisions for a whole population of people and that the
population knows how to make decisions for its welfare. In Smith s mind, people work to supplement
their own lives, and when people seek individual economic gain then they unexpectedly promote
society and stimulate the economy subconsciously. If people earn more money by working harder then
almost all people will work harder. Smith insinuates that people are naturally self preserving and by
default selfish; but to a point. Everyone has something that they want and in this world most things
can be obtained if a person has enough money. Smith believes that every man should be free to

The Birth of Venus Anaylsis Essay

Art History II

Sfakianos The piece that I chose to write about is entitled The Birth of Venus and was painted by the
French artist Nicolas Poussin. This painting was sold to Catherine the Great of Russia in 1771. It was
sold another time by the Hermitage Museum in 1932 when the Soviet government was desperate for
western currency. It was then that it was acquired for the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The painting
was made in Italy in either the year 1635 or 1636. The medium that Poussin used was oils on canvas,
and the size of the painting is roughly around 38 by 42 inches. This painting is considered to be
included the Baroque period. (Philadelphia Museum of Art) Along side of the painting on display is a

are a man and a woman farther in the background. The man is standing in the water while the woman

wreaths on on top of their heads, and they are blowing into what looks like horns. On the right side of
the painting are three more figures. One is a woman sitting on top of a rock with a white cloth
underneath her bottom. Her back is facing towards the viewer and she seems to be looking towards the
man on the other shell. She holds a green cloth on the top of her head with her right arm while resting
on her left arm for support. There is also a tipped vase in front of the rock that is spilling water into the
ocean. To her right is a muscular man holding a woman on his back. Behind the two is an orange
yellow cloth flowing in the wind. In the front of venus is an cherub angel laying on an orange yellow
cloth with it s arms around the head of a sea creature. Above the pink cloth that Venus is holding up
are six more cherub angels. Some are dropping flowers down on the congregation and some have their
little bow and arrows out. There is a lot of clouds in the sky behind them. On the clouds to the left is a

Eastern and Western Parallels
Throughout time, Westerners have more or less oppressed Eastern culture, creating the west as the
metaphysical head of the world. The west s ethnocentric tendencies, have acted as a suppressant to the
spread of non western thought. Even though Eastern ideologies tend to differ greatly from thoughts of
the western world, there is some level of unity between the two. Unlike the ecclesiastical influences,
seen in the west, Confucianism and Sikhi present thoughts about the individual and humankind s
natural goodness. In many cases of political and social order, Eastern and Western philosophy have
found themselves parallel in thought.
Western society views Confucianism as only a partial social contract. Primarily there is an idea of
creation associated with the term social contract, which is not relevant to Confucian thought. This
ideology, different from most Western societies, has no cosmogony at all, as Western theory of
freestanding creation and two realms holds no truth to Confucian thinkers. Confucians believe that the
world and the cosmos have always been, and there has never been any separate divine realm. Any
transitions that occur are consequent to an important system of change and betterment. Unlike most
Western cultures and the idea of the social contract, in Confucian thought there is no necessity for
consent for government. An element of self governance is also present in this ideology, as a part of
what Confucian thinkers believe as being human. Confucianism leans

The Metaphor Of Spiegelman s Maus
The breaks in the main metaphor of Maus occur because of the existential uncertainty of Spiegalman;
and, by doing this, he highlights the hypocritical nature of viewing and speaking about the holocaust.
It is important to distinguish the metaphor setup by Spiegelman from being a universal metaphor,
because if it were, when he breaks the metaphor throughout Maus, those instances would be taken as
individualized and intended for a specific meaning within themselves. However, these cases are better
classified as a part of the entire intent of the metaphor. A clear example of Spiegelman s disinterest in
applying the metaphor universally occurs when his father recalls the Germans counting prisoners and
specific prisoner repeatedly claims to be a German (210). In the panel where Spiegelman asks ... Show

Upon Vladek answering that, For the Germans this guy was Jewish, Spiegelman returns to draw the
prisoner as a mouse. These panels are contradictory to the basis of the metaphor having a single
universalized meaning. First, if the metaphor was strict to aligning a specific animal species to races
and nationalities, it seems odd for Spiegelman to simply draw the man as a mouse, when it is
completely possible, as Vladek says, for the man to be German (210). Second, the metaphor is clearly
not singularly a comparison between hunter and prey, as there are many instances, including one in the
same panel as when the prisoner claims to be German, where there is an imprisoned Pole. From this

Music containing sexual aspects has distinguished the American culture from other cultures, has

Therefore, Americans spend a considerable portion of their leisure time listening to music or
participating in activities that have music involved. A good portion of each musical genre uses
sexuality as the basis for their lyrics.Sexuality can be categorized into different groups that can help us

Miranda has Puerto Rican parents which has had a major influence on his reasoning to blind cast his

This piece targets sexuality in a form that is not used often. When people delve into history they tend
to look at our historical figures as a hero. People do not typically think of these people as being flawed
in their nature. This song demonstrates that
Hamilton was not a hero. He was a human and he made mistakes. In the context of the song, we see
him choose to make this choice. We see him regret it as well. This piece helps to create a social
construct and really change the meaning of what a hero is.
Without using music and sexuality in this case, we would have never got to really delve into the
flawed persona of Hamilton. This piece helps to advance the plot in unexpected ways. This score of a
Broadway show was composed about the story of our underrated founding father, Alexander
Hamilton. Although written in the 21st century by
Lin Manuel Miranda, the score targets the history of yesterday, set right as the American
Revolution events begin. Lin Manuel Miranda wanted to tell the story of yesterday by the people of
today. In his original casting of the show, each role was cast to a minority in our country, except for
the role of King George; who was given to Jonathan Groff, to offer some English historical
significance. This type of casting is still present in the show

Human Behaviour Is Odd At The Best Of Times
Generally human behaviour is odd at the best of times. As inhabitants of the planet, most of us do try
to live happy and productive lives against varying degrees of opposition, and sometimes our coping
skills, the actions we take to be happy, appear to others, including ourselves, to be quite bizarre. This
book is a selection of unusual cases from the files of leading therapists. A collection of first person
accounts of the most bizarre therapy encounters ever. This book is interesting because each chapter is
written from a different therapist s perspective and details how the therapist tackled their bizarre
client. Not to be misinterpreted from the title this book isn t a freak show, tales of the macabre, but a
genuine telling of memorable cases from professionals who have made it their life s work to help
people in dire need and is written with genuine compassion and a noticeable humanity. After finishing
the text, it also became clear to me that the business of the mind, psychiatry and psychology, is by no
means a strict science. The various therapeutic techniques out their being used around the world run
into the thousands. It is a social science that is constantly changing and developing. In other terms,
there is no blanket cure for all or a miracle technique to make us into happy productive people.
After reading these cases, what I notice most of the therapists had in common was their intuition. The
conversations intertwined with the therapist s thoughts makes for a

U.s. Foreign Policy Towards Belarus

From: Rob Foglia, country desk officer of Belarus
Re: Recommended U.S. foreign policy towards Belarus
Date: October 12, 2014
Oppression in Belarus
Breaking Free from Russia Belarus has the veil of a political stranglehold cast over it by the looming
and neighboring Russia. Freedoms are non existent, a tyrant maintains control over the country, and
democracy is nowhere in sight. I have a few recommendations on how U.S. foreign policy towards
Belarus can help fix many of these issues, and help direct the country towards Democracy. First, I will
highlight some history on the so called Republic of Belarus to help put some context on the situation.
Belarus became one of the first members of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This led to elections in the early 1990 s, and Belarus declared itself independent in July 27th, 1990,
and wrote a Declaration of State Sovereignty. The newly formed republic became primarily
communist, mainly because of all the Russian integration that had already occurred. In 1994, The
Republic of Belarus elected Alexander Lukashenko as the President of Belarus. He was officially
reelected in 2001, 2006 and 2010. However, the United States (as well as other western Nations) does
not recognize the results of the 2010 elections under which the Central Election Commission of
Belarus declared Lukashenko president. This is because Western countries decried the election as a
farce and an egregious affront to democracy and human rights. Many of Lukashenko s opposition
leaders had mysterious disappearances. The United States and the European Union called for the
release of all imprisoned former candidates, but took no further action except a travel ban on
Lukashenko. By contrast, countries such as Syria, Russia, and China congratulated the re elected
incumbent. This is just a sample of the Dictatorship that is veiled as a Republic in Belarus.
Transitioning into Democracy
For a nation to truly be free, certain rights have to be available to the people. Freedom of speech,
press, peaceful assembly, and religion are just a few of these things.

How Has Realism Theory Played a Key Role in Israeli and...
Introduction
For many centuries, Judaic and Arabian societies have engaged in one of the most complicated and
lengthy conflicts known to mankind, the makings of a highly difficult peace process. Unfortunately
for all the world s peacemakers the Arab Israeli conflict, particularly the war between Israel and the
Palestinian Territories, is rooted in far more then ethnic tensions. Instead of drawing attention towards
high ranking officials of the Israeli government and Hamas, focus needs to be diverted towards the
more suspect and subtle international relations theory of realism which, has imposed more problems
than solutions.
Throughout the course of this paper, I seek to explore the use of realism theory to both explain and

The Background of the Arab Israeli Conflict
The Arab Israeli Conflict, and the struggle for a religious homeland, is a complex and somewhat
mystified conflict. The tensions between the Palestinian and Israeli peoples can be traced back to
Biblical times, when Abraham allocated for one of his sons, Isaac, to lay claim to Judea or modern day
Israel. Muslims claimed that the elder son Ishmael had been allocated the region in the Qur an.
Although many historians believe otherwise, these claims are still the more popular historical context
amongst monotheistic practitioners. Despite the Arab Israeli conflict being overshadowed by the
countless episodes of war, the middle ages brought with it limited prosperity. The period prior to the
first crusades saw an age of enlightment for the Arabs and the Jews, who would share their culture
with one another and attempt to co exist within Jerusalem. During this time, both cultures would make
important literary and medical advancements. However, the glory was short lived and soon the
crusades opened the floodgates and brought back with it war and tension. The end of the 19th century
brought with it the rise of Arab nationalism and Zionism, which called for the existence of a
permanent Jewish State. Herzl s 1896 manifesto The Jewish State , popularized the idea of Isaac s
promised land and influenced the Jewish peoples of Eastern Europe and Russia to proclaim Israel their
own. The Jewish people took their first steps

Essay on Optimism and Personality Trait
Optimism could be considered a condition of the mind that makes one believe that the best things will
always happen to them. A common idiom used to illustrate optimism versus pessimism is a glass with
water at the halfway point, where the optimist is said to see the glass as half full, but the pessimist sees
the glass as half empty. Optimists tend to see adversity as temporary; more specifically they view the
obstacle as limited to the situation and not generalized.
1) How does the personality trait develop in humans? Where does it appear to come from? (20 pts)

Parents also reinforce optimism and perseverance by encouraging their children to deal with any type
of obstacle in a positive way. Life is full of hurdles but it s the way we deal with these difficulties that
shape our expectations of things.
2) What purpose or function does the trait appear to serve? (20 pts)
Optimism can be a powerful tool to motivate people to do things that we might have reservations
about. Humans have the intellectual power to look ahead and anticipate any likely outcomes. In our
everyday lives we take on numerous tasks a throughout our live whether it is studying for finals,
starting a new project at work or starting a new diet. An article by Annie Paul in Psychology Today
gave the example of how even an ordinary effort like going on a diet can benefit from dose of
optimism. A review of dieting studies show that more than two thirds of dieters gain back more weight
than they initially thought. With such a grim outlook on dieting, optimism gives people the much
needed motivation to believe that their goal is achievable (Paul 2011). If you stopped and took a
minute to think about how much work you had to put in or how much of a risk you could be taking,
you might never even make the attempt. Optimism has such a commanding force that it has the ability
to convince you that things will work out just long enough to take the step forward and make an effort
to accomplish that task. For example, a student in medical school will put a tremendous amount

character development of Holden Caulfield has been affected by Salinger s complications in his school
life, devastating past relationships, and overwhelming traumatic events during his pre The Catcher in

When Salinger attended McBurney School, he tried to conform so he can fit (one way was calling
himself Jerry). While at this school, he also acted in plays and wrote the school s newspaper. This is
shown through Holden as he doesn t try to conform (which could be representing Salinger s regret to
try and conform), hates phoniness (as acting as a character [for example: in a play] is considered being
phony), and likes writing (as shown in the beginning of chapter one as he tells the audience his story
and how he admires his writer brother, D.B.). Salinger himself stated, My boyhood was very much the
same as that of the boy in the book, and it was a great relief telling people about it (interview by
Shirlie Blaney). Salinger s many failed relationships in his lives, from his parents to love interests, are
hinted throughout Holden s life and his character. Salinger s father was from a Jewish descent while
his mother was from a Catholic descent; however Salinger didn t know about this until his bar
mitzvah. Salinger had problematic issues with his father like how his father basically disapproved of
his son in general (for example: participation in plays). It was even described that J.D. skipped his
father s funeral and later stopped eating meat (stated by www.nndb.com). Salinger s relationship with
his parents were broken because of the trust broken by his mother and the

Chicago Gang Issues
The issue of gangs in the United States is one of massive proportions. According to the FBI s website,
as of 2010 there are 33,000 violent street, motorcycle, and prison gangs in the U.S. with
approximately 1.4 million total active members (Pastor). These gangs derive most of their revenue
from the smuggling and distribution of illicit substances and weapons. Many of the gangs in the U.S.
recruit members as young as 11 years old, such as the well known 18th Street Gang from L.A. ( 18th
Street Gang ). The fact that these gangs prey on inner city youth who have nowhere else to turn is why
they remain so powerful, seeing that for every gang member incarcerated the gangs can simply recruit
another member. Due to these reasons I believe that gang activity is one of the largest social issues we
face in the United States today. The city of Chicago is the United States largest hotspot of gang
activity. Today, over 100,000 gangbangers roam Chicago s streets in 625 different groups. Police
report that currently around 223 ongoing gang conflicts exist. Due to a no snitching culture, over 70
percent go unsolved. (Pastor) Those numbers are staggering, especially considering the fact that most
of these gangbangers are under the age of 25. Moreover, According to NBC Chicago, among ... Show

Margot Heinemann s Characteristics In King Lear
William Shakespeare s King Lear is the tragic story of a king s descent from power as the life that he
had once had crumbles before him. It is a story that relies heavily on the relationships between its
characters and how they change. Lear is slowly driven insane throughout the course of the play as he
unintentionally rids himself of the positive relationships while relying upon negative ones. However, it
is Margot Heinemann s argument that the play not only relies on interpersonal drama, but also the
politics of England in her essay, Demystifying the Mystery of the State : King Lear and the World

reader is surprised to see Edgar reaching this position because he had fallen so far. He was originally

his father wanted him dead. He then transforms from a crazy beggar to a noble swordsman for the end

is incredibly powerful to the reader because of the Upside Down World effect which is caused by

Long Term Memory Research
Learning is to gain or acquire knowledge or skill by study, experience, or being taught. This leads to
long term changes in our behavior. Psychological studies in learning normally occupy laboratory
experiments and thus use animals as participants. It is commonly known that learning applies not just
to humans, but also for animals. If you have ever owned a pet, you probably noticed that they pick
things up fairly easily. For example, if you have a particular feeding time and location for a dog, they
usually become familiar with the location of where they need to go in order to be fed. For us humans,
our brain capacity enables us to critically think faster and better; as a result, our learning capability
extends beyond the range of necessary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of course, there are debates as to whether we actually forget anything at all, or whether it just
becomes increasingly difficult to access or retrieve certain items from our memory. Short term
memories can become long term memory through the process of consolidation; this involves
participation and significant association. However, there is some evidence that long term memory also
record to sound to some extent. For example, when you cannot quite remember the words to a certain
song, but it is on the tip of my tongue, this is usually based on the sound of a word; not it s meaning.
But what does our memory have to do with the way that we learn new information? We lose and
acquire information through an information processing system in our brain. This system identifies
how we store, encode, and retrieve information. So when we learn, this entails converting the new
information into long term memory. Much of what we believe we have learned is soon forgotten or
was never really learned in the first place, due to short term memory. The specific strategies you use to
store and remember information in your long term memory affects how likely it is that you will
actually remember it. This is where we begin to study the information that is needed to be learned to
prevent it from fading over time. By re analyzing the information that is needed to be learned, we
repetitively update and renew the information already know until we no longer need to. According to
Aaron S. Benjamin s The Psychology of Learning, we lose about fifty percent of what we learn within
a twenty four hour period because of our short term memory. Therefore, unless you frequently study
and review the information over and over again, it will be lost. This all plays into how we truly receive

He idolizes her as if she were the Virgin Mary: her figure defined by the half opened door . . . The
light from the lamp opposite our door caught the white curve of her neck, lit up her hair that rested

accentuating the white curve of her neck. The language makes obvious that his attraction is physical
rather than spiritual: Her dress swung as she moved her body and the soft rope of her hair tossed from
side to side. His desire for her is strong and undeniable: her name was like a summons to all my
foolish blood ; my body was like a harp and her words and ges

Hypocrisy is characteristic of the adults in this story. The priest is by far the most obvious offender.

Rhetorical Analysis Of The Crisis By Thomas Paine
In Thomas Paine s speech, The Crisis, I written during the retreat of Washington s troops after a defeat
in New Jersey, Paine s intention was to inspire the troops to continue fighting for American
independence from Britain. He adopts an inspirational tone to convey his thoughts to the American
army through an appeal to religion, emotion and varying sentence structures. Paine s syntactical
structuring ranges from cumulative to periodic in order to gather the troops to raise their fighting
spirit. He uses repetition in his sentences to emphasize that the British have committed heinous actions
against the colonists, taxing them and using military force to guarantee American cooperation. Paine
varies his sentence lengths for extra emphasis on some particular topics such as the colonists not
declaring independence earlier. He writes that they could have used the winter as an advantage and to
not properly make use of the winter was a fault on the American s behalf. Paine follows this statement
with a shorter sentence establishing and restoring hope to the American army, with a belief that the
colonists could still triumph over the British. Not only did his syntactical structure aid his inspirational

  • 7. India s The Partition Of India The partition of India is one of the defining chapters in India s entire history. Although many different reasons caused the partition, political factors were a key player in bringing about this monumental change in India s borders. The pre existing communal differences between Hindus and Muslims grew as a result of the fears of both groups losing power and giving up control to the other. The partition which was supposed to grant freedom and independence for all Indians resulted in creating a deeper hatred and animosity which would cost countless lives through riots, rape, and mass murder for decades to come. Gandhi said in actual life, it is impossible to separate us into two nations. We are not two nations. Every Moslem will have a Hindu name if he goes back far enough in his family history. Every Moslem is merely a Hindu who has accepted Islam. That does not create nationality. . . . We in India have a common culture. In the North, Hindi and Urdu are understood by both Hindus and Moslems. In Madras, Hindus and Moslems speak Tamil, and in Bengal, they both speak Bengali and neither Hindi nor Urdu. When communal riots take place, they are always provoked by incidents over cows and by religious processions. That means that it is our superstitions that create the trouble and not our separate nationalities. • 11. Industrialization Dbq Essay During the nineteenth century, the Industrial Revolution began to replace agriculture goods with those of manufactured goods. With this revolution came the implementation of new technology, new social classes, and social theories. In England, the Industrial Revolution had taken root much faster than continental Europe, particularly in Manchester. A leading textile manufacturing center, Manchester soon attained a mechanized cotton mill in 1780. With this increased capacity for workers, Manchester s population increased quite significantly. The census of 1851 revealed there to be over 300,000 citizens were previously in 1750 there were 18,000 citizens. The increase in population mostly came from immigrants and the working class. The rapid growth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Manchester was overcrowded and cramped. Manchester grew rapidly from the 1750 s to the 1850 s population and infrastructure wise. Manchester during the 1750 s was relatively small compared to the size of the city during the 1850 s. The city had nearly quadrupled in size (Doc. 1). Assuming Manchester circa 1750 could support 18,000 people comfortably but circa 1850 the city has to support 300,000 people without nearly enough space. This suggests the population per area density increased substantially resulting in overcrowding. Robert Southey, an English Romantic poet describes Manchester as a crowded city with buildings packed together. He also notes Manchester is the second largest city in England both size and population wise (Doc. 2). This gives an account of how cramped living conditions were in the cities from a person s perspective. Southey has a negative view of city life and thus goes on to write about it in Colloquies on the Progress and Prospects of Society. This is later refuted by Thomas B. Macaulay, a member of Parliament and historian. Macaulay states Southey has an unrealistic view of the world where peasants frolick in the countryside without a care in the world. Macaulay believes city life is better for people because they have food, shelter, and healthcare (Doc. 3). The poetry of Philip Larkin has led numerous scholars to debate about the poet s true attitude towards religion. Many of Larkin s poems seem to be unambiguous, emanating a strong feeling of pessimism and denouncement to religion and faith. The doubts and uncertainties Larkin felt towards religion reverberate throughout his work, resulting in most scholars to consider him an atheist. Their faith is presented as being heavily deceptive, and their emotions described as deep hoarse tears, as if a kind of dumb / And idiot child within them survives (14 15). The portrayal of these religious people presents in the mind of the reader an image of a completely ignorant dunce, or even a jackass, whereas describing their tears as hoarse, was a homophone likely chosen with malicious intent. Larkin s fear of death contributes not only to his depiction of religion, but also his struggle to accept it, seeing as he viewed religion unable to save people from suffering and death. The poem Aubade describes at length the speaker s struggle and fear of death and how he feels religion in the past or rational thinking in the modern world of science can by no means drive away... their imminent death (Bao 189). The speaker is paralyzed by the thought of unresting death that is a whole day nearer every day he comes home from work (5). In the extremely morbid last stanza of the poem the speaker proclaims his belief that no trick dispels death, and that religion used to try (22), further showing that the only real obstacle between Larkin and faith is his inability to accept death as part of the divine plan (Schray 56). Considering Larkin to be an atheist however is not the most accurate representation of the poet, and his frequent use of religion, as dire as it may be, indicates a more complicated notion. Have I lived my life to the fullest? Am I ready to go on? Do I have any regrets? Other people who care about us probably ask the same questions, but answer them selfishly to convince us to stay or to fight. Ultimately it is up to the person on their deathbed to answer these questions regardless of what their family and friends wish. As the narrator begs his father to fight to stay alive, he brings up example after example of various people who do not give up on their deathbeds. He compares these examples to his father to show how he feels and how he looks up to his father. He first describes how wise men at their end know dark is right, // Because their words had forked no lightning they // Do not go gentle into that good night (Thomas 4). These men understand that death is natural, but they have not made their mark in the world yet and thus try to fight death until they have. His second example is essentially the same, but with good men instead. His third example is about Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, // And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way (Thomas 10). These are the men who took life for granted and do not realize how unfulfilled their lives are until they are on their deathbeds. All of these examples are the son s way of pleading with his father to hold on. His final example asks his father to try and be happy. He says, Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight // Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay (Thomas 13). He is trying to encourage his father and tell him that being blind is not a good enough reason to simply give up on life and wait for death. His last words to his father are quite moving as he says, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray, // Do not go gentle into that good night. // Rage, rage against the dying of the light (Thomas 17). The son does not care if his father curses or blesses him so long as he fights to live and does not give up. In a way, he is behaving quite selfishly because it is not his life to dictate, but at the same time, it is a clear depiction of how frightening death is for everyone, regardless of your ... The Omnivore s Dilemma by Michael Pollen Omnivores Dilemma Rhetorical Analysis In The Omnivores Dilemma Michael Pollen s objective is address, educate and convince the reader by analyzing our diets. He mentions we have become oblivious to what we are eating. Sometimes we wonder where our food comes from, and what ingredients are in it. Pollan states, we would rather eat in ignorance (11). The underlying message here is if people know what they are eating, they might not be able to eat comfortably again. Pollan uses this message to gain the reader s attention. Pollan creates an illustration to help the audience visualize his experience. He also implements personal anecdotes and compare contrast techniques to effectively persuade the reader, that what they are eating is unhealthy. Today omnivores have a wide selection of food to choose from. It is difficult for omnivores to decide what to eat. Pollan uses the example The koala doesn t worry about what to eat: If it looks and smells and tastes like a eucalyptus leaf, it must be dinner (3). Pollan is using figurative language which requires the reader to use their imagination. In addition he is referring to our alienation with food. We can no longer pick up something without questioning what it is comprised of. Omnivores have a wide selection of food and a koala only has one. Although written in the 21st century by Lin Manuel Miranda, the score targets the history of yesterday, set right as the American Revolution events begin. Lin Manuel Miranda wanted to tell the story of yesterday by the people of today. In his original casting of the show, each role was cast to a minority in our country, except for the role of King George; who was given to Jonathan Groff, to offer some English historical significance. This type of casting is still present in the show today. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 24. Human Behaviour Is Odd At The Best Of Times Generally human behaviour is odd at the best of times. As inhabitants of the planet, most of us do try to live happy and productive lives against varying degrees of opposition, and sometimes our coping skills, the actions we take to be happy, appear to others, including ourselves, to be quite bizarre. This book is a selection of unusual cases from the files of leading therapists. A collection of first person accounts of the most bizarre therapy encounters ever. This book is interesting because each chapter is written from a different therapist s perspective and details how the therapist tackled their bizarre client. Not to be misinterpreted from the title this book isn t a freak show, tales of the macabre, but a genuine telling of memorable cases from professionals who have made it their life s work to help people in dire need and is written with genuine compassion and a noticeable humanity. After finishing the text, it also became clear to me that the business of the mind, psychiatry and psychology, is by no means a strict science. The various therapeutic techniques out their being used around the world run into the thousands. It is a social science that is constantly changing and developing. In other terms, there is no blanket cure for all or a miracle technique to make us into happy productive people. After reading these cases, what I notice most of the therapists had in common was their intuition. The conversations intertwined with the therapist s thoughts makes for a ... Foreign Policy Towards Belarus To: Secretary of State John Kerry From: Rob Foglia, country desk officer of Belarus Re: Recommended U.S. foreign policy towards Belarus Date: October 12, 2014 Oppression in Belarus Breaking Free from Russia Belarus has the veil of a political stranglehold cast over it by the looming and neighboring Russia. Freedoms are non existent, a tyrant maintains control over the country, and democracy is nowhere in sight. I have a few recommendations on how U.S. foreign policy towards Belarus can help fix many of these issues, and help direct the country towards Democracy. First, I will highlight some history on the so called Republic of Belarus to help put some context on the situation. Belarus became one of the first members of the ... The newly formed republic became primarily communist, mainly because of all the Russian integration that had already occurred. In 1994, The Republic of Belarus elected Alexander Lukashenko as the President of Belarus. He was officially reelected in 2001, 2006 and 2010. However, the United States (as well as other western Nations) does not recognize the results of the 2010 elections under which the Central Election Commission of Belarus declared Lukashenko president. This is because Western countries decried the election as a farce and an egregious affront to democracy and human rights. Many of Lukashenko s opposition leaders had mysterious disappearances. The United States and the European Union called for the release of all imprisoned former candidates, but took no further action except a travel ban on Lukashenko. By contrast, countries such as Syria, Russia, and China congratulated the re elected incumbent. This is just a sample of the Dictatorship that is veiled as a Republic in Belarus. Introduction For many centuries, Judaic and Arabian societies have engaged in one of the most complicated and lengthy conflicts known to mankind, the makings of a highly difficult peace process. Unfortunately for all the world s peacemakers the Arab Israeli conflict, particularly the war between Israel and the Palestinian Territories, is rooted in far more then ethnic tensions. Instead of drawing attention towards high ranking officials of the Israeli government and Hamas, focus needs to be diverted towards the more suspect and subtle international relations theory of realism which, has imposed more problems than solutions. The Background of the Arab Israeli Conflict The Arab Israeli Conflict, and the struggle for a religious homeland, is a complex and somewhat mystified conflict. The tensions between the Palestinian and Israeli peoples can be traced back to Biblical times, when Abraham allocated for one of his sons, Isaac, to lay claim to Judea or modern day Israel. Muslims claimed that the elder son Ishmael had been allocated the region in the Qur an. Although many historians believe otherwise, these claims are still the more popular historical context amongst monotheistic practitioners. Despite the Arab Israeli conflict being overshadowed by the countless episodes of war, the middle ages brought with it limited prosperity. The period prior to the first crusades saw an age of enlightment for the Arabs and the Jews, who would share their culture with one another and attempt to co exist within Jerusalem. During this time, both cultures would make important literary and medical advancements. However, the glory was short lived and soon the crusades opened the floodgates and brought back with it war and tension. The end of the 19th century brought with it the rise of Arab nationalism and Zionism, which called for the existence of a permanent Jewish State. Herzl s 1896 manifesto The Jewish State , popularized the idea of Isaac s promised land and influenced the Jewish peoples of Eastern Europe and Russia to proclaim Israel their own. • 27. Essay on Optimism and Personality Trait Optimism could be considered a condition of the mind that makes one believe that the best things will always happen to them. A common idiom used to illustrate optimism versus pessimism is a glass with water at the halfway point, where the optimist is said to see the glass as half full, but the pessimist sees the glass as half empty. Optimists tend to see adversity as temporary; more specifically they view the obstacle as limited to the situation and not generalized. 1) How does the personality trait develop in humans? Where does it appear to come from? Life is full of hurdles but it s the way we deal with these difficulties that shape our expectations of things. 2) What purpose or function does the trait appear to serve? (20 pts) Optimism can be a powerful tool to motivate people to do things that we might have reservations about. Humans have the intellectual power to look ahead and anticipate any likely outcomes. In our everyday lives we take on numerous tasks a throughout our live whether it is studying for finals, starting a new project at work or starting a new diet. An article by Annie Paul in Psychology Today gave the example of how even an ordinary effort like going on a diet can benefit from dose of optimism. A review of dieting studies show that more than two thirds of dieters gain back more weight than they initially thought. With such a grim outlook on dieting, optimism gives people the much needed motivation to believe that their goal is achievable (Paul 2011). If you stopped and took a minute to think about how much work you had to put in or how much of a risk you could be taking, you might never even make the attempt. Optimism has such a commanding force that it has the ability to convince you that things will work out just long enough to take the step forward and make an effort to accomplish that task. For example, a student in medical school will put a tremendous amount ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When Salinger attended McBurney School, he tried to conform so he can fit (one way was calling himself Jerry). While at this school, he also acted in plays and wrote the school s newspaper. This is shown through Holden as he doesn t try to conform (which could be representing Salinger s regret to try and conform), hates phoniness (as acting as a character [for example: in a play] is considered being phony), and likes writing (as shown in the beginning of chapter one as he tells the audience his story and how he admires his writer brother, D.B.). Salinger himself stated, My boyhood was very much the same as that of the boy in the book, and it was a great relief telling people about it (interview by Shirlie Blaney). Salinger s many failed relationships in his lives, from his parents to love interests, are hinted throughout Holden s life and his character. Salinger s father was from a Jewish descent while his mother was from a Catholic descent; however Salinger didn t know about this until his bar mitzvah. Salinger had problematic issues with his father like how his father basically disapproved of his son in general (for example: participation in plays). • 30. Chicago Gang Issues The issue of gangs in the United States is one of massive proportions. According to the FBI s website, as of 2010 there are 33,000 violent street, motorcycle, and prison gangs in the U.S. with approximately 1.4 million total active members (Pastor). These gangs derive most of their revenue from the smuggling and distribution of illicit substances and weapons. Many of the gangs in the U.S. recruit members as young as 11 years old, such as the well known 18th Street Gang from L.A. ( 18th Street Gang ). The fact that these gangs prey on inner city youth who have nowhere else to turn is why they remain so powerful, seeing that for every gang member incarcerated the gangs can simply recruit another member. Due to these reasons I believe that gang activity is one of the largest social issues we face in the United States today. The city of Chicago is the United States largest hotspot of gang activity. Today, over 100,000 gangbangers roam Chicago s streets in 625 different groups. Police report that currently around 223 ongoing gang conflicts exist. • 32. Long Term Memory Research Learning is to gain or acquire knowledge or skill by study, experience, or being taught. This leads to long term changes in our behavior. Psychological studies in learning normally occupy laboratory experiments and thus use animals as participants. It is commonly known that learning applies not just to humans, but also for animals. If you have ever owned a pet, you probably noticed that they pick things up fairly easily. For example, if you have a particular feeding time and location for a dog, they usually become familiar with the location of where they need to go in order to be fed. For us humans, our brain capacity enables us to critically think faster and better; as a result, our learning capability extends beyond the range of necessary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of course, there are debates as to whether we actually forget anything at all, or whether it just becomes increasingly difficult to access or retrieve certain items from our memory. Short term memories can become long term memory through the process of consolidation; this involves participation and significant association. However, there is some evidence that long term memory also record to sound to some extent. For example, when you cannot quite remember the words to a certain song, but it is on the tip of my tongue, this is usually based on the sound of a word; not it s meaning. But what does our memory have to do with the way that we learn new information? We lose and acquire information through an information processing system in our brain. This system identifies how we store, encode, and retrieve information. So when we learn, this entails converting the new information into long term memory. Much of what we believe we have learned is soon forgotten or was never really learned in the first place, due to short term memory. The specific strategies you use to store and remember information in your long term memory affects how likely it is that you will actually remember it. This is where we begin to study the information that is needed to be learned to prevent it from fading over time. By re analyzing the information that is needed to be learned, we repetitively update and renew the information already know until we no longer need to. According to Aaron S. Benjamin s The Psychology of Learning, we lose about fifty percent of what we learn within a twenty four hour period because of our short term memory. Therefore, unless you frequently study and review the information over and over again, it will be lost. This all plays into how we truly receive the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The story is narrated by a mature man reflecting upon his adolescence and the events that forced him to face the disillusioning realities of adulthood. The boy observes the hypocrisy of adults in the priest and Mrs. Mercer; and his vain, self centered uncle introduces him to another disillusioning aspect of adulthood. The language makes obvious that his attraction is physical rather than spiritual: Her dress swung as she moved her body and the soft rope of her hair tossed from side to side. Paine s syntactical structuring ranges from cumulative to periodic in order to gather the troops to raise their fighting spirit. He uses repetition in his sentences to emphasize that the British have committed heinous actions against the colonists, taxing them and using military force to guarantee American cooperation. Paine varies his sentence lengths for extra emphasis on some particular topics such as the colonists not declaring independence earlier. He writes that they could have used the winter as an advantage and to not properly make use of the winter was a fault on the American s behalf.
