2 years ago at DOES14, I presented “Vision Versus Execution: Implementing Continuous Delivery”. I shared how we achieved a big Continuous Delivery win – increasing software test coverage and delivery velocity and efficiency. Since then, we have been busy scaling DevOps, Continuous Delivery and Lean principles across teams and practices throughout Urban Science. This rollout included both a cultural aspect, as well as an implementation of a centralized, shared, self-service automation solution for our teams – enabling them to “opt-in” to an automated pipeline. In this talk I will present anecdotes and learnings gathered through our experience over the past two years and discuss the challenges and the value of scaling DevOps across the organization.

Right on the heels of the Manifesto for Agile Software Development, a new movement with the moniker DevOps has further advanced software delivery. Although the Agile software development movement brought iterative and incremental concepts to our industry, in many organizations its reach was relegated to only the application development teams. In many cases, this moved the bottlenecks in organizations from application development to release management, IT operations and business program and portfolio management decision making. This local optimization leads to real world application of Agile software development being perceived as unsuccessful and increased probability of being thrown away for the comfort in the illusions of control of plan-driven approaches. The promise of DevOps is to further improve our ability to make holistic optimizations from business to software delivery to operations and ultimately increase feedback into our business decision making processes. This promise involves the application of The Three Ways as described by Gene Kim: Flow, Feedback and Continuous Experimentation and Learning. Even for those that were able to take advantage of Agile software development we can not sit on our laurels. We must embrace continuous improvement in order to fend off the effects of “Software is Eating the World” as Marc Andreessen pronounced. DevOps provides a view on the culture, practices, tools and processes for how valuable software is delivered, operated and evolved to enable competitive advantage.

With businesses built around software now disrupting multiple industries that appeared to have stable leaders, the need has emerged for enterprises to create "software factories" built around the following principles: Streaming customer feedback directly into rapid, iterative cycles of application development Horizontally scaling applications to meet user demand Compatibility with an enormous diversity of clients, with mobility (smartphones, tablets, etc.) taking the lead Continuous delivery of value, shrinking the cycle time from concept to cash Infrastructure has taken the lead in adapting to meet these needs with the move to the cloud, and Platform as a Service (PaaS) has raised the level of abstraction to a focus on an ecosystem of applications and services. However, most applications are still developed as if we're living in the previous generation of both business and infrastructure: the monolithic application. Microservices - small, loosely coupled applications that follow the Unix philosophy of "doing one thing well" - represent the application development side of enabling rapid, iterative development, horizontal scale, polyglot clients, and continuous delivery. They also enable us to scale application development and eliminate long term commitments to a single technology stack. While microservices are simple, they are certainly not easy. It's recently been said that "microservices are not a free lunch". Interestingly enough, if you look at the concerns expressed here about microservices, you'll find that they are exactly the challenges that a PaaS is intended to address. So while microservices do not necessarily imply cloud (and vice versa), there is in fact a symbiotic relationship between the two, with each approach somehow compensating for the limitations of the other, much like the practices of eXtreme Programming.

"Innovate or die” may sound extreme, but it’s the only way to thrive in today’s ever competitive market. The Dynatrace team wanted to ensure that the company was relevant 5 years from now so they formed an internal incubator with one goal: transform Dynatrace into a Cloud Native DevOps organization. The incubator focused on what the company needed to do in order to integrate nascent cloud technologies so that they wouldn’t be left in the dust when the inevitable tipping point to cloud arrives. Transforming into a cloud native company would allow for rapid release cycles and provide an embedded feedback loop. The Results: Dynatrace now has a 99.998% availability of SaaS Service and can deploy changes within an hour if necessary. In parallel, a new SaaS and managed offering is released every 2 weeks with 170 production updates per day. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
