Care and Share Provides Food to Children in Need

An experienced educational professional, Dr. Shirley Miles currently works to help education institutions improve classroom instruction and increase student achievement as a senior consultant with Focal Point, LLC, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Outside of her activities at Focal Point, Dr. Shirley Miles supports the work of several organizations, including the Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado, a nonprofit group that provides food to those in need throughout 31 Colorado counties.
- 3. In pursuit of its mission to combat hunger in southern Colorado communities, Care and Share oversees several assistance programs focused on children and families. One of the organization’s main programs, Send Hunger Packing, provides weekend supplies of food to students and families from low-income households. Throughout the school year, students selected for the Send Hunger Packing program are given a backpack full of food on Fridays and days before holidays. The backpacks contain enough nutritious, non-perishable food items to provide seven meals for three to four people. In addition to reducing weekend hunger, the program helps increase nutritional awareness, decrease nutrition-related health problems, and improve school performance.
- 4. There were 38 sites across Colorado that were enrolled in Send Hunger Packing during the 2013-14 school year. The demand for the program remains high, and there is currently a waiting list for schools and other institutions that wish to become involved.
