DEDICATION
I would like to start off by mentioning a verse from one of my
favorite poems by
Edgar Allen Poe,
“A dream within a dream”.
I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand--
How few! Yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep--while I weep!
O God! Can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! Can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?
Just the way one cannot hold onto such specks and grains of
golden sand, one cannot hold onto the sands of time. Time flies
by and we are left with a striking and lovely bouquet of memories
and remembrances that keep on touching our hearts. But yes, the
moments that we always would want to preserve and keep with us
pass by and leave a mark on our hearts. They never come back.
MY SCHOOL. It has left within me, so many things to hold onto.
Sometimes I believed that my dreams and reality wouldn’t collide
but my school gave me the desire to aspire and to keep hope. All
those heart-rending and touching experiences I have had in my
school would always remain with me forever. One of my dreams,
4
“Do they feel?” to become successful has a background casting of
my school. It gave me so much that I cannot put it in words.
Thus, I dedicate this book to my school, before leaving the place
that openly nurtured me and helped me stand up on my feet.
Thank you, Abhinava Vidyalaya English Medium Pre-primary,

FOREWORD
Surabhi writes with a candor and maturity, which prods at the
complexities of life, revealing the difficulties that come with
growing up and finding your way, but also the strength and joy
that can be found in those people closest to you.
Through her lyrical verse from her first bouquet “MOSAIC
HEARTS NEVER FADE” she traverses across different types of
love: friendship, familial, romantic, other emotions and in each
one there is a strength to be found. The following closing quote
from her first bouquet throws light on all these feelings and
emotions.
“Not all trees wither away in the drought”
One of the poems from the same bouquet having no name
reflects honest state of a teenager,
“Today I find myself a kid again, I find myself sweet, innocent and
sane.”
This verse by Surabhi is a stark look at the pressures and intense
emotions that come with being a teenager. She sheds a beautiful
light on these issues that every teenager faces through her words
in her poetry. These poems are emotionally intelligent and also
offer hope.
When someone has this level of desire, flair and creativity, they
cannot stay silent and I cannot wait to hear what words come
next. I wish her all my best wishes for the bouquets she is offering
to this world.

following thoughts to offer about
Surabhi and her poetry…
I met Surabhi, when I toured India,
in September 2015. Her intense
love and passion for poetry became
clear to me instantly. Her poetry
touched me the first time, but
reflecting on it again, it really
spoke to me. There was lots to
identify within it. Her talent and
commitment is very special and she
should keep it going

PREFACE
I am a proud and blessed father of Surabhi Kulkarni, who
has given me the privilege of writing about her and her poems for
the second time in a short span of eight months– especially at this
tender age. I am a close witness to this transformation of Surabhi
and her poetry and it’s been a unique experience.
It’s almost likewatching the butterfly taking birth, coming out
of the cocoon… letting it go through all the efforts required to break
the walls, get the strength to face the outside world by oneself, get
gradually exposed to the realities of this dry world, letting it go
through the learning process of dealing with the “rules of the
game” …
Honestly, it has been a miraculous experience to be
associated with such a bright mind, blessed with these thinking
abilities – to be able to get into the shoes of any individual, to have
the ability to experience the feelings and actual events and to be
able to articulate them in such an articulate manner. I am not
asserting here for being Surabhi’s father, but it’s my honest
submission to the world – which has concretized over a period of
time and I am sure to put it in words here.
Surabhi, my daughter has been writing small poems since
her second or third standard. She has been engrossed and found
to be in her own world number of times, imagining and seeing out of
the world concepts – we used to wonder on what she is doing and
9
often felt worried as her parents. She would come up with a
completely well-thought and insightful perspective and could talk
convincingly about it and we could feel the depth of her thinking.
The first book was an exploration and expression of her
thoughts about this world and that has gone to further depths of
deeper thoughts in this book. Looking back, I find a huge sense of
introspection about topics that aren’t touched often and openly,
about themes that I considered normal teenagers mightn’t get
access to or get related to but she came to me with a focused
mindset and told me that “I want to take up “THIS” specific topic
for my next poetry book” – even before the launch of her earlier
book. My honest reaction (in my mind) was – “why are you taking
such a heavy topic?” – “take some lighter one …” But she was
determined – she wanted to express herself and the current
teenager of what they see, experience, reckon, expect, worry,
indulge, fantasize, discuss, imagine, think, plan .. From their
expanding world and what is the “world feeling about it” … does the
“world” really FEEL? She was almost sure of the title of this book
around that time.
Surabhi confronted me with the question, “Do you really
know what this title means?” I was taken aback and will attempt to
explain it here… DO THEY FEEL? Is about a sense of
“questioning” the status-quo by the individual to the various
elements of this world – the individual could be elated, happy, full of
enthusiasm or going through drudgery, oppression, deprivation,
10
depression, aggression, provocation, allurement… does the world
“think” about this individual going through these experiences and
does it really “feel” what this individual is going through .. Help
apart! … The individual could be “she”, “he” or “they” together. It’s
an expression of the deepest feeling in the minds of this individual,
the feelings of handicap, deprivation, suppression, happiness,
elation, subjugation, repression, disappointment, frustration,
anticipation, suspense, deception, euphoria or as strong as despair
or desolation – Surabhi has dealt with all of these experiences from
that individuals point-of-view and articulated the state of mind of
this individual with a question in mind to the world – “I am going
through all this – do you feel, do you care, do I really matter, do you
mind, do you really find me to be important, do you give me damn” …
The mode of presentation of these poems is outlining the
state of this individual, the actually description of the event and
then the state in which this questions are coming up … making an end
to the poem... The titles are so very aptly chosen and I tried to test
Surabhi by indicating and suggesting to make some changes to
them and found her to be “rock solid” on the thinking behind them
and “has not moved from naming them as they are”.
Some of the experiences outlined here are out-of-context
for a teenager and I was personally not very sure about it, but
eventually when I read through those poems I could appreciate
Surabhi’s abilities to keep it extremely specific, but enough
abstract for the imagination of the reader. Let me confess, that a
11
huge, huge and really huge amount of thinking has gone through
Surabhi’s mind before writing these poems, putting them in the
sequence they are now and what she has as a view point as a
bouquet of poems.
The sections Abstract and Romance represent the mood
of the poems as the way the “individual” perceives and experiences
it – Abstract demonstrating deeply engraved experiences , while
Romance relating to the subtle, but definite relationships and their
tenderness the poetess is bringing forth . In the Abstract section,
the poetess asks question to “them”, who should know the
perspective about the “Prize”, the treatment like a “Toy”, how the
“Past” gets engraved, how they behave as “Black hearted” and how
the materialistic world crushes the hearts like “Machines” from
those from this world, which conventionally get called as “Family” …
There is a clear thread in the whole of the sequence in the sections,
the meaning and messaging in the poems…
The poems like “Nightmares”, “Chaos”, “Depression”,
“Hunt” represent some of the extreme and bold experiences – very
non-peculiar to this age, but coming across very starkly. I would
leave the further explorations and hence interpretations for your
creative minds. Surabhi goes to the extent of defining her own
terms, which are not to be found in the conventional English
vocabulary, for example the poem titled “Luavers”, represents her
own form of emotion and meanings – leaving the reader wonder and
12
make him choose a different meaning to the normal word “lovers” by
the shade brought in, in the context of her poems.
In Surabhi’s views, the shorter the poem, better is the
richness, depth, abstraction, imagination and symbolism it
represents – it’s more rewarding to the poet for the variety of
contexts that could be brought in front, while it’s extremely thought
provoking for the reader to apply their own contexts for their own
interpretations during “decoding” of this “code” in each of the
poem. When one is able to put all the interpretations across and
then looks at the whole set together and tries to connect the dots
– the whole book and hence the book’s title “Do They Feel?”
resonates in the minds.
I find Surabhi or even the current generation as extremely
blessed, and at the same time very capable, matured, strong and
bold, having no inhibitions, and abilities to experience the world
about 15-20 years ahead in time and still being humble about it.
This is a bliss to the current generation – you have it in you, you
are exposed to all the possible modes of expressions...
Aim is to share these poems, have them getting known and
associated with sensitive and appreciating minds. I strongly believe
that these feelings are contagious – they will definitely take you
down the thought journey and you start getting the same, similar or
your own experiences associated with the feeling in the poems. I
believe that it would be the success criteria for the effectiveness of
Surabhi’s blooming poetry.
13
In my view, it’s just the start and a long way to go … Surabhi
will keep on getting indulged in further variety of experiences,
shades of feelings and keep on capturing and articulating them...
She will definitely reach out to you with more bouquets of poems
and will be happy to touch your minds.
My thanks to you for getting associated with this book, I am
sure that this journey together is going to be extremely satisfying
mutually – please feel free to share your views on

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my being, my life
to preserve the moments in the form of the art of poetry, my
surroundings for their eagerness of bidding me the situations I
attain to, as well as ….
I would like to thank my mother, Sumedha, who has always kept
an eye on me no matter how much the modernized world pulled
me into the magnetism of exploring. She has encouraged me in
every step I took and has been the backbone of the entire soul of
mine. She never ever gave up when it was me who chose the
wrong road sometimes. Yes, I agree; the channel to reach that
white bright circle in the pitch black portrait was my mother.
Thank you mother, without you I wouldn’t have been able to step
a foot on this palladium.
My dear Soham, my young brother who still portrays my
differences in the right manner; you have been the lace to the
shoe. Without your smile and never ending inventions, I wouldn’t
have reached this door. Thank you.
I wish to thank all of my friends and some of them are really very
special to me – they have been with me throughout it all and have
been bearing with me with a smile on their face. They have had
their shoulders for me to lean on at every hitch and crook and
their hands to hold me when I for instance, was about to fall. I
owe them so much that I cannot put it in words. In the journey
from my earlier book, yes these eight whole months, I have
opened up to an incredible arena of lovely people coming into my
life, touching my heart and gently making me believe in things I
paid no heed to. A feeling that I had stated didn’t exist is
18
something that is special in my life today. Thank you to all my
friends for looking into my eyes and loving me right, all those
times I needed you.
All of my family members, my grandparents and my relatives have
been very supportive and their encouragement has helped me
tremendously to shape up this book indeed. Thanks a bunch.
I have a lot of mentors and well-wishers. I owe you all. You all
have been very kind, considerate and always supportive for the
positives and negatives of the creativity in me …I would specially
like to thank all of my teachers and my school, your guidance and
encouragement has helped me immensely to be able to create this
book in this form. Thank You All!

Bouquet: ABSTRACT
Section 1: Do they feel?
1. No prize
I know it is hard, too much to
bear
I know you are trying, believe
me I care
Nights like these, they tell you
to give up
Drinking from the empty, from
the broken cup
Luring the bad, the one with
the smirks
Rocking the heated chair, how
swift it lurks
Dancing on the thorns, with
prickly steps
They turn feet to red, say that
it helps
I can see that art work, painted
so beautifully
But thrown away in dungeons,
no use oh folly
Appreciation nonetheless, work
that's plenty
Bear hands that sharpen, eyes
moist oh pity
That majestic robe woven, best
silk around
Rags in the old rooms now, all
sleeping sound
Melodies on the flute, oh
rhythmically perfect
Who you to bestow, rejected
out oh how to affect
Trying the most, dedication tip
to toe
Folly these creations dear, they
set them on a blow
Beautifying the palace of the
sweetest flowers
Lilac withered forcefully, roses
dead on floors
You built the mansion of
nobles, the one of the
magnificent
Thrashed down, cut down,
ablaze, ashes of that conceit
Your work, my dear, the best of
all the worlds
No record, no demand,
nothing it holds
You cry, you weep, you wail on
this return
Oh you artist of today, don't
you die, there's a lot to learn
Who they to judge your
creations?
Not they the creators my son,
nor matter their reactions.
Liars around jealousy in eyes
envy on the edge
Don't you jump, not yet, take
support of that ledge
There is magic, true lust,
beautiful imagination in you
20
Not with them, yes nothing,
just you is the colors of true
What you can do, none can,
it's a secret
It's a belief of the inner,
something that's felt
Meet the hearts so true chant
the words of sparkle
Glitter the bright more shine,
no fury to tackle
Write the writings that touch
Paint the paintings that
beautify
Mould the moldings that create
Build the buildings that shelter
Weave the weavings that cover
Draw the drawings that inspire
Decorate the decorations that
splendor
Thrash the judgments with no
base
Make the bouquet of your own
flowers and tie the ribbon, the
lace
Smiles on the faces, bring
happiness to the race
You the creators oh dear
Without you the world so
mere
But after the creations by you,
the creators
Only one thing that does
always matters
Happiness is always something
that lies
Never ever ask for return, no
prize.
2. Toy
There were dreams to be
sought in all of them
They wanted to attain what
they desired
They ran around exploring new
endeavors
Searching places and trying new
things
Help came for sure
undoubtedly
They clung onto it and made
the most of it
Then the clan had to move on
achieve some more
Hopping onto the next stone
they passed on
What was left was the scrap the
remains of the helpers
Thrown into the bin of the
worthless dump
The most priceless gems now
got called useless
21
Degradation of their levels the
standards they didn’t belong to
Brought down to the
intimidating horrors of no use
The helpers now were prone to
be ragged
But the clan survived it got
widely held
All the dreams now true they
had nothing to do
Workers at hands no need for
independency
Lazy lads of today they craved
for much more
But at the back of their minds
Tortured the devil of guilt
The past that haunted thrashed
their joy
The sins of red the sins of
gloom
They reminded and itched and
crawled every night
Desire had shaken and the clan
had to repent
One look at the bin and the
blade slashed in
Vengeance the rule the ragged
hopes of fear
Clinging to the clan knowing
to demolish
Yells and cries and flattering
taunts
Swelled up the users calling the
useful useless
Didn’t they too have dreams,
the ones to be sought?
The naïve hearts that had
content ready to help
Who they oh my, to snatch the
identities
Who they my sweet flower, to
bury the wrong seeds
Who they oh smile, to outcast
the tears of vain
Who they my lover, to break
the hearts
Who they oh sweet lord, to tell
your existence
Who they oh my, to treat
them like toys
How many a clans to rule this
world and thrash away the joys
How many a aids to get turned
into helpless toys?
22
53. Addiction
Deep blue eyes, are the worst
hypnotizers.
Warm soft hands, are the worst
addictions.
Boomerang hugs, are the worst
attractions.
Outstanding English, is the
worst blackmail.
Ironed black suits, are the worst
breath takers.
And now I effing can't help it,
cause you have it all.
54. Love
I was a young girl when I came
to know what love is, yes I did
Magnificent as it was, I guessed
the feelings being a kid
His face was round, curved and
as soft as the petals of roses
Small hands with little fingers
and feet curled up with tiny
toes
The cute little giggle that he
casted on his face’s edge
Brought my heart down to
shiver, down the ledge
Every day, that little hand ran
down my cheeks softly
Caressing and comforting me,
smiling at me gently
That gentle touch would make
my day
Even though no words, he
uttered nothing, couldn’t say
The emotions, the actions the
feelings took bay
Against the odds our love used
to lay
His tender small body, cuddled
up in my arms
The lullaby so protective, used
to protect him from all the
harms
Looking at him used to make
me know the sign
That there is eternal love, at the
end of every line
The heartwarming
momentarily presence of his
I repent I should have held
forever in my arms, amidst
The love between the moon
and stars out the sky
Between the milky way beyond
does lie
Saw him growing day by day,
23
and felt
Should have protected in my
heart and held
Forever that small, bundle of
joy as he was
Away from the torturous
universal laws
Matter of fact the time goes by
Fading memories, with a sigh
Looking at these moments I
cry
Love is true, might or may
Tenderness of that little heart
so naive
Still takes me back to the past I
crave
Asked the pope, the nun, the
god
What reason I bestow the love
so gold?
No answers they held back all
timid
Always knowing about
something they hid
Asked my heart what the
reason was for me
It told me darling, he showed
love to thee.

PREAMBLE
“I vary, you vary, we vary.
We are a variety of variations that vary.”
The life gets instituted as the basic necessity for a living being –
breath – simply denoting life as breathing and vice versa. Breath,
for me, is an emotion. Coming up with colors that a few might
know but most might not, an alien side of life that plunges you
and makes you ponder about life. The sense of living in the form
of inhaling, taking in, absorbing, relating, associating, thinking,
correlating, fantasizing through various experiences and hence
expressions of feelings will be the next voyage. A breath can
conquer and destroy as well. In the next editions, you will be led
down a ledge, where you would find souls of the unknown and
the voices of imagination taking over humanity. Yes, sometimes
being alive or existing or having a heart isn’t what makes you
count always. There is more to it. Will meet the new faces,
unknown characters and will get them delineate their being and
their desire, the driving force for living, being alive, and still
keeping open for more of these experiences…
Would leave self and you pondering about the next nectar that I
am entwining together for the next bouquet to come … and the
following comes in my mind …
25
I will
If you tell me to drop down dead, I will.
If you tell me to leave what I started, I will.
If you tell me to let go off what I have, I will.
If you tell me to be with you forever, I will.
If you tell me to curse what I like, I will.
If you tell me to admire something I hate, I will.
If you tell me to stop writing poetry, I never
will.
Stay Tuned …

SOME IMPORTANT VIEWPOINTS
Here are some personalities that are near-and-dear to
Surabhi, while conversely, Surabhi and her thoughts matter to
them a lot. They are expressing their thoughts, feelings, view-
points about how they see Surabhi, her thinking abilities, her
maturity, her ability to caress this complex realities of the world …
These are straight from their hearts and have been carved in
Surabhi’s heart …
Mrs. Jayashri Narayan
Surabhi’s Advisor, Abhinava Vidyalaya English Medium High
School
A work of maturity and thoughtfulness by Surabhi. Some of
the poems speak volumes about the emotions and their effect on
the poetess. Some are keeping to her teenage and the rosy-eyed
look that her age makes her see the world with.
About Surabhi – Basically a fun loving teenager with high
expectations from life and a keen sensitivity towards all relations.
“MOSAIC HEARTS NEVER FADE”, her earlier
bouquet of poems, was an initial approach, but the present work
speaks of the graph of maturity and commitment, which Surabhi
has traversed. The poem “I will” in this anthology means so much in
this world of non-commitment – so much of commitment coming
from the thoughts of someone so young – worth appreciating!
27
The way Surabhi has dealt with “Depression” the poem will
surely make a good mark on the youth of today. All the poems are
endeavors to reach out to those who are close and not-so-close. It
surely makes interesting reading and provides an insight into the
mind of a teenager; a girl who has seen the world, but not actually.
Kudos to Surabhi!! Let your creativity go ahead by leaps and
bounds.
In this present day of science and technology a holistic work of
poems – means so much to me personally – [an English teacher
handling the adolescent age group] means a lot and I hope
Surabhi continues the work and these small footprints go a long
way to leave their marks in the world of English poetry.
God bless. With lots of love and wishing Surabhi luck

Mrs. Avanti Bias
Surabhi’s Advisor, Abhinava Vidyalaya English Medium High

Surabhi, you have a blessing of writing a wonderful poetry.
The poetry reflects a state of “maturity”, which resonates our
28
minds. I liked the poems in your new bouquet of poems “Do They
Feel?” , especially, the “Depression”, “Evil”, “Impossible”, “With
you, I see”, “Over my eyes” are worth a special mention. I would
like to commend the “aptness” of the titles of each of these poems.
The titles reflect the essence of the poems. – Very thoughtful,
Surabhi. In my view, to your tender age, your poetry is “complete”
and “full of insights”. This skill is a god gift to you.
I would like to wish you a great success in your life. Let these
“poetry skills” blossom in your life and I hope you get the required
happiness you deserve. Ensure that you cherish all these poems
during your creation and bless the others with the happiness of
relishing them.

Surabhi’s Role Model, Abhinava Vidyalaya English Medium
High School
Life is a journey of thousand miles, which begin with a single
step. In this journey towards destiny, doing what one loves is the
cornerstone of having abundance in life. The most wonderful
thing is when one finds the purpose of their creation. …, for
purpose is the reason of the journey and passion is the fire that
lights the way. This teenager has managed to fine her path and
create it too in the form of poetry.
29
Surabhi’s poetry lifts the veil from the hidden beauty of the world
and help in discovering a new and an unknown side of oneself.
Surbahi’s quest in this exciting journey has found a quaint shore.
She chose to let poetry define, confine, refine and outshine her.
Surabhi’s poems speak eloquently of the individuality she
possesses.
‘Do They Feel’ portrays the charismatic style of the poet. It is a
modest attempt to make the reader relieve his moments once
again. Poems such as “I still love you”, “Leaving”, and “Let go the
day” truly reflect a persons deepest feelings. The book sincerely
deals with the basic yet most complex emotions of all “love”. The
intensity of sadness often hits you deeper than sadness. This
book is a repertoire of such amalgamated nostalgic emotions.
At such a tender age, Surabhi has managed to provide the
reader an erudite and impeccable treasury of metrical
compositions.
Surabhi has proved herself to be very skilled individual; and the
destiny of such a dedicated and hardworking being is always
“SUCCESS”.
Wish you success in all your future endeavors.

I have known Surabhi for some time. Her poems are a
reflection of the various facets of a young woman’s life. Life is full
of conflicting emotions and Surabhi has been able to express
such through her poems. It is indeed incredible that in spite of
being so young she is able to feel the pulse of those myriad
feelings heart and the vulnerability of the emotions is well
expressed. Surabhi, for sure has etched her name among the list
of poets indeed.

Principal Abhinava Vidyalaya English Medium High School, Pune
Dear Surabhi, you have made me very proud again. I am really
impressed with the speed in which you have got your second
poetry book getting published. Just in your teens and what an
impact you have already made with these bouquet of poems.
Life is lifeless without emotions and emotions are meant to be
expressed, not to be bottled up. I have always told you students
that the quality of life will improve by improving one’s
communication skills.
Surabhi, you have confidently taken the first step by opening your
heart to the world through your poems, which will surely make
31
you realize your dreams. “MOSAIC HEARTS NEVER FADE” was
the first step to outline your inner impressions and emotions,
while “DO THEY FEEL?” find you dealing with most inner,
complex, intriguing, and puzzling feels and experiences of life. It’s
really wonderful to be witness to this creation.
Congratulations again! Wish you all the best and looking forward
to some more bouquets of magical and insightful poems. Keep it
up Surabhi! God bless you …

Mrs. Sujala Watve
Head, Jnana Prabodhini Institute of Psychology,
Secretary, Jnana Prabodhini Samshodhan (Research) Sanstha
(Society)
National Supervisory Psychologist, Mensa India, Pune
This is Surabhi’s second book of poems in such a short
period. I have read the amazing poems from the first book and was
eager to see the second. In her busy days of std X how could she
be so creative to give such a unique product is always a question
before me. Though I am aware that poet has different eyes to see
the world, such detachment is very difficult. I hope it should not be
a hurdle in her way to studies and re-enter her true world. But it is
always assumed that,
“That which even the Sun doesn’t see, a poet sees.”
You have to take a ‘deporting passport’ while entering her
32
‘treasure island’.
Very sweet ‘lovable’ words, wonderful vocabulary, shades of
words conveying the exact emotions, command over language,
beautiful scenario-creation and even the philosophical touch
behind, seem to be the capturing themes of Surabhi’s poetry.
She creates a magnificent canvas before you to enter in her lovely
dreamy world. To enter her world you need to be away from the
real world around. See if she gives a passport for entering the
different ‘globe’.
She seems to be blessed by a boon of language and sensitivity.
Commitment to poetry, language very high understanding of
emotional world, and out-of-box thinking is the constellation within
her. She appears to be on her way to become a Creatively
Gifted. Right now she has been writing over a focused topic of
‘love’. The emotion, passion, sacrifice experienced with this single
emotion is displayed through the book nicely. But I am sure that
she will cross this boundary and will not limit her poems to a single
emotion, but open the doors of larger world for her readers. A
researcher within me definitely sees the seeds of Giftedness
within Surabhi. I am sure that she will spread her horizon beyond
the bounds with her enormous potentials.
All the best for her future career from all angles, academic,
intellectual, and creative.
God bless

Mr. Narendra Barhate
CEO and Managing Director, SEED Infotech, Pune
I found Surabhi to be extremely sensitive to the world around her
in this tender age and is able to bring out her emotions and
imaginations in very expressive and authentic manner. She shows a
great confidence to be bold and courageous in dealing with and
reflecting on some of the aspects in reality. A work, that is worth
commending - especially in this rut of life and modernization. A
real relief, to the life full rush...
Surabhi possess a unique blend of element of ingenuity, boldness
to face the world, being open to express own views as unique
characteristics. Being a strong promoter of creativity and
innovation myself, this has appealed me directly. This is her
second book in such a short period of time. I would really like to
commend her abilities and focus.
Compared to the last bouquet "MOSAIS HEARTS NEVER FADE"
– Surabhi demonstrates further deeper understanding, insights and
subtleties of relations towards life and reflects it in various poems.
Surabhi has demonstrated more mastery over choice of worlds and
deeper thoughts in the poems in this book over the last one.
I strongly recommend Surabhi to choose an appropriate career
option and poetry writing is a very natural to her. I extend my
best wishes to Surabhi for her endeavor as a budding poetess.
Looking forward to her next bouquet...

ABOUT THE BOOK
This book contains the poetry created by a poetess to describe some
feelings in life that could be very deep, internal, authentic and
unique. The poetess is able to experience them virtually and
articulate them in the form of the poems. Her poetry has matured
over years from her first poetry book “MOSAIC HEART NEVER
FADE” to this second book. Being in the teenage, she is full of
imagination, enthusiasm, energy and creativity coupled with
independent view-points, justifications and genuine philosophy
about the life. The poems reflect the state of mind of teenager in the
exploration state to establish their own purpose and trying to gauge
the fathoms of this real world.

this book has been initiated and
published. She chooses to write poetry
for herself.
She says,

writing, is breathing. I breathe.”

  • 3. 3 DEDICATION I would like to start off by mentioning a verse from one of my favorite poems by Edgar Allen Poe, “A dream within a dream”. I stand amid the roar Of a surf-tormented shore, And I hold within my hand Grains of the golden sand-- How few! Yet how they creep Through my fingers to the deep, While I weep--while I weep! O God! Can I not grasp Them with a tighter clasp? O God! Can I not save One from the pitiless wave? Is all that we see or seem But a dream within a dream? Just the way one cannot hold onto such specks and grains of golden sand, one cannot hold onto the sands of time. Time flies by and we are left with a striking and lovely bouquet of memories and remembrances that keep on touching our hearts. But yes, the moments that we always would want to preserve and keep with us pass by and leave a mark on our hearts. They never come back. MY SCHOOL. It has left within me, so many things to hold onto. Sometimes I believed that my dreams and reality wouldn’t collide but my school gave me the desire to aspire and to keep hope. All those heart-rending and touching experiences I have had in my school would always remain with me forever. One of my dreams,
  • 4. 4 “Do they feel?” to become successful has a background casting of my school. It gave me so much that I cannot put it in words. Thus, I dedicate this book to my school, before leaving the place that openly nurtured me and helped me stand up on my feet. Thank you, Abhinava Vidyalaya English Medium Pre-primary, Primary and High School.
  • 5. 5 FOREWORD Surabhi writes with a candor and maturity, which prods at the complexities of life, revealing the difficulties that come with growing up and finding your way, but also the strength and joy that can be found in those people closest to you. Through her lyrical verse from her first bouquet “MOSAIC HEARTS NEVER FADE” she traverses across different types of love: friendship, familial, romantic, other emotions and in each one there is a strength to be found. The following closing quote from her first bouquet throws light on all these feelings and emotions. “Not all trees wither away in the drought” One of the poems from the same bouquet having no name reflects honest state of a teenager, “Today I find myself a kid again, I find myself sweet, innocent and sane.” This verse by Surabhi is a stark look at the pressures and intense emotions that come with being a teenager. She sheds a beautiful light on these issues that every teenager faces through her words in her poetry. These poems are emotionally intelligent and also offer hope. When someone has this level of desire, flair and creativity, they cannot stay silent and I cannot wait to hear what words come next. I wish her all my best wishes for the bouquets she is offering to this world.
  • 6. 6 Aisling Fahey Aisling Fahey from Walthamstow, UK has been recognized as “the Young Poet Laureate for London” for the year 2014/15. The Young Poet Laureate is a Spread the Word program supported by The Legacy List, the independent charity for Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Aisling participated in a series of workshops creating new poetry and was then selected from a shortlist of six young poets aged 18-25 by a high profile panel, including professional poets Nick Makoha and Jacob Sam La Rose. She has been touring across the world and visited India in September 2015, when she met Surabhi. She has the following thoughts to offer about Surabhi and her poetry… I met Surabhi, when I toured India, in September 2015. Her intense love and passion for poetry became clear to me instantly. Her poetry touched me the first time, but reflecting on it again, it really spoke to me. There was lots to identify within it. Her talent and commitment is very special and she should keep it going

  • 8. 8 PREFACE I am a proud and blessed father of Surabhi Kulkarni, who has given me the privilege of writing about her and her poems for the second time in a short span of eight months– especially at this tender age. I am a close witness to this transformation of Surabhi and her poetry and it’s been a unique experience. It’s almost likewatching the butterfly taking birth, coming out of the cocoon… letting it go through all the efforts required to break the walls, get the strength to face the outside world by oneself, get gradually exposed to the realities of this dry world, letting it go through the learning process of dealing with the “rules of the game” … Honestly, it has been a miraculous experience to be associated with such a bright mind, blessed with these thinking abilities – to be able to get into the shoes of any individual, to have the ability to experience the feelings and actual events and to be able to articulate them in such an articulate manner. I am not asserting here for being Surabhi’s father, but it’s my honest submission to the world – which has concretized over a period of time and I am sure to put it in words here. Surabhi, my daughter has been writing small poems since her second or third standard. She has been engrossed and found to be in her own world number of times, imagining and seeing out of the world concepts – we used to wonder on what she is doing and
  • 9. 9 often felt worried as her parents. She would come up with a completely well-thought and insightful perspective and could talk convincingly about it and we could feel the depth of her thinking. The first book was an exploration and expression of her thoughts about this world and that has gone to further depths of deeper thoughts in this book. Looking back, I find a huge sense of introspection about topics that aren’t touched often and openly, about themes that I considered normal teenagers mightn’t get access to or get related to but she came to me with a focused mindset and told me that “I want to take up “THIS” specific topic for my next poetry book” – even before the launch of her earlier book. My honest reaction (in my mind) was – “why are you taking such a heavy topic?” – “take some lighter one …” But she was determined – she wanted to express herself and the current teenager of what they see, experience, reckon, expect, worry, indulge, fantasize, discuss, imagine, think, plan .. From their expanding world and what is the “world feeling about it” … does the “world” really FEEL? She was almost sure of the title of this book around that time. Surabhi confronted me with the question, “Do you really know what this title means?” I was taken aback and will attempt to explain it here… DO THEY FEEL? Is about a sense of “questioning” the status-quo by the individual to the various elements of this world – the individual could be elated, happy, full of enthusiasm or going through drudgery, oppression, deprivation,
  • 10. 10 depression, aggression, provocation, allurement… does the world “think” about this individual going through these experiences and does it really “feel” what this individual is going through .. Help apart! … The individual could be “she”, “he” or “they” together. It’s an expression of the deepest feeling in the minds of this individual, the feelings of handicap, deprivation, suppression, happiness, elation, subjugation, repression, disappointment, frustration, anticipation, suspense, deception, euphoria or as strong as despair or desolation – Surabhi has dealt with all of these experiences from that individuals point-of-view and articulated the state of mind of this individual with a question in mind to the world – “I am going through all this – do you feel, do you care, do I really matter, do you mind, do you really find me to be important, do you give me damn” … The mode of presentation of these poems is outlining the state of this individual, the actually description of the event and then the state in which this questions are coming up … making an end to the poem... The titles are so very aptly chosen and I tried to test Surabhi by indicating and suggesting to make some changes to them and found her to be “rock solid” on the thinking behind them and “has not moved from naming them as they are”. Some of the experiences outlined here are out-of-context for a teenager and I was personally not very sure about it, but eventually when I read through those poems I could appreciate Surabhi’s abilities to keep it extremely specific, but enough abstract for the imagination of the reader. Let me confess, that a
  • 11. 11 huge, huge and really huge amount of thinking has gone through Surabhi’s mind before writing these poems, putting them in the sequence they are now and what she has as a view point as a bouquet of poems. The sections Abstract and Romance represent the mood of the poems as the way the “individual” perceives and experiences it – Abstract demonstrating deeply engraved experiences , while Romance relating to the subtle, but definite relationships and their tenderness the poetess is bringing forth . In the Abstract section, the poetess asks question to “them”, who should know the perspective about the “Prize”, the treatment like a “Toy”, how the “Past” gets engraved, how they behave as “Black hearted” and how the materialistic world crushes the hearts like “Machines” from those from this world, which conventionally get called as “Family” … There is a clear thread in the whole of the sequence in the sections, the meaning and messaging in the poems… The poems like “Nightmares”, “Chaos”, “Depression”, “Hunt” represent some of the extreme and bold experiences – very non-peculiar to this age, but coming across very starkly. I would leave the further explorations and hence interpretations for your creative minds. Surabhi goes to the extent of defining her own terms, which are not to be found in the conventional English vocabulary, for example the poem titled “Luavers”, represents her own form of emotion and meanings – leaving the reader wonder and
  • 12. 12 make him choose a different meaning to the normal word “lovers” by the shade brought in, in the context of her poems. In Surabhi’s views, the shorter the poem, better is the richness, depth, abstraction, imagination and symbolism it represents – it’s more rewarding to the poet for the variety of contexts that could be brought in front, while it’s extremely thought provoking for the reader to apply their own contexts for their own interpretations during “decoding” of this “code” in each of the poem. When one is able to put all the interpretations across and then looks at the whole set together and tries to connect the dots – the whole book and hence the book’s title “Do They Feel?” resonates in the minds. I find Surabhi or even the current generation as extremely blessed, and at the same time very capable, matured, strong and bold, having no inhibitions, and abilities to experience the world about 15-20 years ahead in time and still being humble about it. This is a bliss to the current generation – you have it in you, you are exposed to all the possible modes of expressions... Aim is to share these poems, have them getting known and associated with sensitive and appreciating minds. I strongly believe that these feelings are contagious – they will definitely take you down the thought journey and you start getting the same, similar or your own experiences associated with the feeling in the poems. I believe that it would be the success criteria for the effectiveness of Surabhi’s blooming poetry.
  • 13. 13 In my view, it’s just the start and a long way to go … Surabhi will keep on getting indulged in further variety of experiences, shades of feelings and keep on capturing and articulating them... She will definitely reach out to you with more bouquets of poems and will be happy to touch your minds. My thanks to you for getting associated with this book, I am sure that this journey together is going to be extremely satisfying mutually – please feel free to share your views on shirish_kul@yahoo.com. • 17. 17 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to take this opportunity to thank my being, my life to preserve the moments in the form of the art of poetry, my surroundings for their eagerness of bidding me the situations I attain to, as well as …. I would like to thank my mother, Sumedha, who has always kept an eye on me no matter how much the modernized world pulled me into the magnetism of exploring. She has encouraged me in every step I took and has been the backbone of the entire soul of mine. She never ever gave up when it was me who chose the wrong road sometimes. Yes, I agree; the channel to reach that white bright circle in the pitch black portrait was my mother. Thank you mother, without you I wouldn’t have been able to step a foot on this palladium. My dear Soham, my young brother who still portrays my differences in the right manner; you have been the lace to the shoe. Without your smile and never ending inventions, I wouldn’t have reached this door. Thank you. I wish to thank all of my friends and some of them are really very special to me – they have been with me throughout it all and have been bearing with me with a smile on their face. They have had their shoulders for me to lean on at every hitch and crook and their hands to hold me when I for instance, was about to fall. I owe them so much that I cannot put it in words. In the journey from my earlier book, yes these eight whole months, I have opened up to an incredible arena of lovely people coming into my life, touching my heart and gently making me believe in things I paid no heed to. A feeling that I had stated didn’t exist is

  • 24. 24 PREAMBLE “I vary, you vary, we vary. We are a variety of variations that vary.” The life gets instituted as the basic necessity for a living being – breath – simply denoting life as breathing and vice versa. Breath, for me, is an emotion. Coming up with colors that a few might know but most might not, an alien side of life that plunges you and makes you ponder about life. The sense of living in the form of inhaling, taking in, absorbing, relating, associating, thinking, correlating, fantasizing through various experiences and hence expressions of feelings will be the next voyage. A breath can conquer and destroy as well. In the next editions, you will be led down a ledge, where you would find souls of the unknown and the voices of imagination taking over humanity. Yes, sometimes being alive or existing or having a heart isn’t what makes you count always. There is more to it. Will meet the new faces, unknown characters and will get them delineate their being and their desire, the driving force for living, being alive, and still keeping open for more of these experiences… Would leave self and you pondering about the next nectar that I am entwining together for the next bouquet to come … and the following comes in my mind …

  • 26. 26 SOME IMPORTANT VIEWPOINTS Here are some personalities that are near-and-dear to Surabhi, while conversely, Surabhi and her thoughts matter to them a lot. They are expressing their thoughts, feelings, view- points about how they see Surabhi, her thinking abilities, her maturity, her ability to caress this complex realities of the world … These are straight from their hearts and have been carved in Surabhi’s heart … Mrs. Jayashri Narayan Surabhi’s Advisor, Abhinava Vidyalaya English Medium High School A work of maturity and thoughtfulness by Surabhi. Some of the poems speak volumes about the emotions and their effect on the poetess. Some are keeping to her teenage and the rosy-eyed look that her age makes her see the world with. About Surabhi – Basically a fun loving teenager with high expectations from life and a keen sensitivity towards all relations. “MOSAIC HEARTS NEVER FADE”, her earlier bouquet of poems, was an initial approach, but the present work speaks of the graph of maturity and commitment, which Surabhi has traversed. The poem “I will” in this anthology means so much in this world of non-commitment – so much of commitment coming from the thoughts of someone so young – worth appreciating!
  • 27. 27 The way Surabhi has dealt with “Depression” the poem will surely make a good mark on the youth of today. All the poems are endeavors to reach out to those who are close and not-so-close. It surely makes interesting reading and provides an insight into the mind of a teenager; a girl who has seen the world, but not actually. Kudos to Surabhi!! Let your creativity go ahead by leaps and bounds. In this present day of science and technology a holistic work of poems – means so much to me personally – [an English teacher handling the adolescent age group] means a lot and I hope Surabhi continues the work and these small footprints go a long way to leave their marks in the world of English poetry. God bless. With lots of love and wishing Surabhi luck ===XXX=== Mrs. Avanti Bias Surabhi’s Advisor, Abhinava Vidyalaya English Medium High School Surabhi, you have a blessing of writing a wonderful poetry. • 28. 28 minds. I liked the poems in your new bouquet of poems “Do They Feel?” , especially, the “Depression”, “Evil”, “Impossible”, “With you, I see”, “Over my eyes” are worth a special mention. I would like to commend the “aptness” of the titles of each of these poems. The titles reflect the essence of the poems. – Very thoughtful, Surabhi. In my view, to your tender age, your poetry is “complete” and “full of insights”. This skill is a god gift to you. I would like to wish you a great success in your life. Let these “poetry skills” blossom in your life and I hope you get the required happiness you deserve. Ensure that you cherish all these poems during your creation and bless the others with the happiness of relishing them. ===XXX=== Ms. Ashwini Patil Surabhi’s Role Model, Abhinava Vidyalaya English Medium High School Life is a journey of thousand miles, which begin with a single step. In this journey towards destiny, doing what one loves is the cornerstone of having abundance in life. The most wonderful thing is when one finds the purpose of their creation. …, for purpose is the reason of the journey and passion is the fire that lights the way. This teenager has managed to fine her path and create it too in the form of poetry.
  • 29. 29 Surabhi’s poetry lifts the veil from the hidden beauty of the world and help in discovering a new and an unknown side of oneself. Surbahi’s quest in this exciting journey has found a quaint shore. She chose to let poetry define, confine, refine and outshine her. Surabhi’s poems speak eloquently of the individuality she possesses. ‘Do They Feel’ portrays the charismatic style of the poet. It is a modest attempt to make the reader relieve his moments once again. Poems such as “I still love you”, “Leaving”, and “Let go the day” truly reflect a persons deepest feelings. The book sincerely deals with the basic yet most complex emotions of all “love”. The intensity of sadness often hits you deeper than sadness. This book is a repertoire of such amalgamated nostalgic emotions. At such a tender age, Surabhi has managed to provide the reader an erudite and impeccable treasury of metrical compositions. Surabhi has proved herself to be very skilled individual; and the destiny of such a dedicated and hardworking being is always “SUCCESS”. Wish you success in all your future endeavors. ===XXX===
  • 30. 30 Ms. Sujata Phalnikar Surabhi’s Inspiration I have known Surabhi for some time. Her poems are a reflection of the various facets of a young woman’s life. Life is full of conflicting emotions and Surabhi has been able to express such through her poems. It is indeed incredible that in spite of being so young she is able to feel the pulse of those myriad feelings heart and the vulnerability of the emotions is well expressed. I have read the amazing poems from the first book and was eager to see the second. In her busy days of std X how could she be so creative to give such a unique product is always a question before me. Though I am aware that poet has different eyes to see the world, such detachment is very difficult. I hope it should not be a hurdle in her way to studies and re-enter her true world. But it is always assumed that, “That which even the Sun doesn’t see, a poet sees.” You have to take a ‘deporting passport’ while entering her
  • 32. 32 ‘treasure island’. Very sweet ‘lovable’ words, wonderful vocabulary, shades of words conveying the exact emotions, command over language, beautiful scenario-creation and even the philosophical touch behind, seem to be the capturing themes of Surabhi’s poetry. She creates a magnificent canvas before you to enter in her lovely dreamy world. To enter her world you need to be away from the real world around. See if she gives a passport for entering the different ‘globe’. She seems to be blessed by a boon of language and sensitivity. Commitment to poetry, language very high understanding of emotional world, and out-of-box thinking is the constellation within her. She appears to be on her way to become a Creatively Gifted. Right now she has been writing over a focused topic of ‘love’. The emotion, passion, sacrifice experienced with this single emotion is displayed through the book nicely. But I am sure that she will cross this boundary and will not limit her poems to a single emotion, but open the doors of larger world for her readers. A researcher within me definitely sees the seeds of Giftedness within Surabhi. I am sure that she will spread her horizon beyond the bounds with her enormous potentials. All the best for her future career from all angles, academic, intellectual, and creative. God bless ===XXX===
  • 33. 33 Mr. Narendra Barhate CEO and Managing Director, SEED Infotech, Pune I found Surabhi to be extremely sensitive to the world around her in this tender age and is able to bring out her emotions and imaginations in very expressive and authentic manner. She shows a great confidence to be bold and courageous in dealing with and reflecting on some of the aspects in reality. A work, that is worth commending - especially in this rut of life and modernization. A real relief, to the life full rush... Surabhi possess a unique blend of element of ingenuity, boldness to face the world, being open to express own views as unique characteristics. Being a strong promoter of creativity and innovation myself, this has appealed me directly. This is her second book in such a short period of time. I would really like to commend her abilities and focus. Compared to the last bouquet "MOSAIS HEARTS NEVER FADE" – Surabhi demonstrates further deeper understanding, insights and subtleties of relations towards life and reflects it in various poems. Surabhi has demonstrated more mastery over choice of worlds and deeper thoughts in the poems in this book over the last one. I strongly recommend Surabhi to choose an appropriate career option and poetry writing is a very natural to her. I extend my best wishes to Surabhi for her endeavor as a budding poetess. Looking forward to her next bouquet... ===XXX===
