What’s hot now, what’s going to be huge,
and what’s worth your time to read!

                                        Kristin Bernet
                                        March 5, 2012

The title says it all! This is the story of
Helen and Lucas and their star crossed
love. As the descendants of ancient
Greek Gods they are modern day
    demigods, complete with super powers,
    super enemies, and seemingly
compelled by fate to pay for the sins
    their forefathers committed during the
    Trojan war.

What sets Starcrossed apart from other
    tales of demigods and starcrossed
lovers is its fully imagined history and
    world.

    If you liked: Twilight, Mortal
    Instruments, Percy Jackson Series, The
Goddess Test, or Meg Cabot’s Abandon.

Future Dystopian society is divided into four
groups: Candor (The Honest), Abnegation
(The Selfless), Dauntless (The Brave), and
Erudite (The Intelligent).
Beatrice is about to turn sixteen and instead
of getting ready for a sweet sixteen birthday
party she is mulling over the biggest decision
of her life; Should she choose to stay with
her family in Abnegation or is her heart
calling her down a different path?
Divergent is a fast paced thriller, with heart
stopping action and adventure, and haunting
scenes of romance.

If you liked: The Hunger Games, The Vampire
Academy series, or Scott Westerfeld’s the
Uglies series.

In America after the Second Civil War, the
Pro-Choice and Pro-Life armies came to an
agreement: The Bill of Life states that
human life may not be touched from the
moment of conception until a child reaches
the age of thirteen. Between the ages of
thirteen and eighteen, however, a parent
may choose to retroactively get rid of a child
    through a process called "unwinding."
Unwinding ensures that the child's life
    doesn’t “technically” end by transplanting
all the organs in the child's body to various
recipients. Now a common and accepted
practice in society, troublesome or unwanted
teens are able to easily be unwound.

If you like: dystopian thrillers, controversial topics,
or thought provoking critiques of society.

Review from 365daysofreading.com:
“Colby is best friends (and also in love) with
Bev, a flighty girl who belongs to the all-girl
band The Disenchantments, which is
essentially the worst musical group in history.
What The Disenchantments lack in talent, they
make up for with commitment and charisma.
Colby is their official roadie, and the summer
after they graduate high school, the group
tours the west coast—from San Francisco to
Portland. After the tour, Bev promised Colby
that they would go to Europe—just the two of
them—and explore for a year. But during the
tour, Bev suddenly tells Colby that she won’t
be going to Europe with him—she’s going to
college.”

If you like: Road trips, realistic fiction, friends
drama, and music.
If you like: futuristic dystopian thrillers and
                         fast paced action.

“It’s been 300 years since Lake Michigan became Unlake Michigan; the “cool age” is only hazily known to
residents of Wharfton, a small village that sits alongside the walled city of the Enclave. Gaia is 16 and
works in Western Sector Three with her mother delivering babies, “advancing” the first three per month to
live a better life inside the city. It’s a wrenching routine Gaia doesn’t question until her parents are
mysteriously arrested by Enclave authorities. Gaia’s rescue attempt is fraught with peril—the burn scar on
her face marks her as a “freak” who would never be allowed into the Enclave’s exclusive gene pool—and
soon she herself is tossed into a cell with other female physicians.” Booklist

“Striking out into the wasteland with nothing but her baby sister, a handful of supplies, and a rumor to
guide her, sixteen-year-old midwife Gaia Stone survives only to be captured by the people of Sylum, a
dystopian society where women rule the men who drastically outnumber them, and a kiss is a crime. In
order to see her sister again, Gaia must submit to their strict social code, but how can she deny her sense
of justice, her curiosity, and everything in her heart that makes her whole?” Amazon

From Booklist:
“In her unsettling debut, Karr depicts a sex-
obsessed future where women are the
perpetual victims of predatory marketing, and
other societal ills seen in our present—
families trapped in the welfare system,
pharmaceutical companies in bed with health-
care providers and the media—have been
taken to terrifying ends.”

Set in the stunning cities of Paris
and London, amidst the backdrop of
    the French Revolution, Charles
    Dickens created the ultimate love
    triangle.

“It was the best of times, it was the
    worst of times!”

Notas do Editor

  1. Today we are going to look at some of my favorite books. Some are old, as in published before you were born, and some are so new that they aren’t even available to buy yet, but what they all have in common is that I love these books and I hope that some of them will interest you.
  2. This is probably my favorite book from 2011. It has romance, action, cliffhangers, andspooky characters.Lucas, Helen Trojan War, Greek MythologyCape Cod, modern day high school.Good for people who liked: Twilight, Mortal Instruments (Jace and Clary loved each other but couldn’t be together), Percy Jackson Series, The Goddess Test (Goddess interrupted- sequel I’ve read and it’s excellent), or Meg Cabot’s Abandon.
  3. Divergent is the next Hunger Games. It’s very fast paced, from the first chapter until the last I couldn’t put this book down. It represents all that is great in a society (honesty, selflessness, bravery, and intelligence) and all that can destroy a society (secrets, repression, conformity, and division). If you like dystopian thrillers, fast paced reads, strong female heroines and complicated romances then Divergent is for you.
  4. We’ve all upset our parents and no matter how old you are you’ll continue to upset your parents. I’m a married adult and a mother and yet I still piss off my mom sometimes. But what if instead of getting grounded, yelled at, or having your cell phone taken away your parents could decide to “unwind” you? Essentially you would no longer exists in your current state. Your body would be taken apart and the pieces would be reused on other individuals. In follows we follow three runaway teens who were all scheduled for Unwinding: Connor, a rebel whose parents have had enough of him and decide to unwind him; Risa, a ward of the state who is to be unwound due to cost-cutting; and Lev, his parents' tenth child whose unwinding has been planned since birth as a religious tithing. As their paths intersect and lives hang in the balance, Shusterman examines serious moral issues in a way that will keep readers turning the pages to see if Connor, Risa, and Lev avoid meeting their untimely ends.
  5. From 365daysofreading: “Music lovers, The Disenchantments is definitely a book for you. There are many references to great bands and good music, but there’s also this vibe that just feels like a music video. Emotions run high, a boy is in love with his best friend, and a group of teens get in a car and go anywhere they want”Music recommendation: Home by the Edward Sharpe and the magnetic Zeros.
  6. Booklist: The facts behind inbreeding and the numerous birthing scenes will give this an added appeal to science-minded teensI liked Prized because it’s a female centric society. Because women are in short supply, they wield all of the power and oppress the men, who actually greatly outnumber them. In turn contact or relationships are closely regulated. A kiss or hand holding could result in a day in the stocks (stockade) If you liked: Crossed and Matched by Ali Condie, The Handmaiden’s Tale, Louis Lowry’s The Giver
  7. Booklist: (grades 9-12) In 2150 Chicago, girls are walking billboards. Upon turning 16, they receive government-issued tattoos on their wrists that read “XVI.” They’re supposed to keep the girls safe, but in reality, the tattoos broadcast their brand-new sexual availability. As their sixteenth birthdays approach, Nina is increasingly disturbed by her best friend’s obsession with becoming the ideal “sex-teen” and entering the Female Liaison Specialist (FeLs) service, the only option for women from the lower tiers to move up the social ladder. Meanwhile, Nina works hard to uncover the mystery her dead mother left behind, a secret that could end the entire FeLs program. Publisher’s Weekly: Gender politics and sexual awareness play prominent roles in Karr's thought-provoking dystopian debut, set in a totalitarian future. A solid, enjoyable story. Ages 14 up
