Principal’sLetter Welcome to our Greenfield Community School 2008-2009. This year we are offering the yearbook entirely on-line as we are conscious of the financial situation for many of our families. In this way you can invite your friends and family to view this lively, digital version and, if you prefer, you can download and print your own copy by following the link from our website. There have been many highlights to the year and it is my sincere hope that you will enjoy this digital yearbook and return to view it frequently, savouring the moments of success and achievement enjoyed by the students, staff and wider community of GCS. Thirty-four years ago, when I graduated from the London University Institute of Education, I never imagined that I would find myself head of a school in Dubai. I don’t think I would have been able to find Dubai on a map and I certainly thought my career ahead would always be in the UK! Now we have young people at GCS from forty-three countries who are undaunted that their future may lie beyond their country of origin and for whom education is much more than I ever dreamed possible. Our students are going to be leaders of the future, they will be educated at universities in countries different to their homeland, they will have friends from different cultures, nationalities and religions, in short they will not only have the big dreams and exceptional expectations normal in young people but they will be able to realize them and become community builders marked by consideration and respect for one another. How do I know this? Our students are taught using the International Baccalaureate programmes, they are trained in character development and common courtesies, and we are seeing a growing evidence that this is having good effects . Our students’ minds are open and receptive and they become knowledgeable beyond our widest expectations. We , at GCS, believe in encouraging positive peer-pressure, such as completing homework and research projects in a timely manner, and we see improvements in our students’ attitudes towards this. We provide for our students a microcosm of the global community to which they can aspire: a warm environment where diverse students are welcome, a place to work hard and play hard, settle differences amicably, appreciate one another’s culture, and prepare for the changing world ahead. This has been an exceedingly difficult year for many of our families and we are aware that some of you are leaving Dubai. Our warmest wishes go with you, wherever your relocation make take you, near or far. I have every confidence that I shall learn of our former GCS students’ high achievements sometime in the future! CEO’s Message Dear GCS Staff and Students, As the 2008/2009 academic year comes to an end, it gives me immense pride to recognize the completion of yet another successful year for the staff and students at Greenfield Community School. The outcomes of the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau’s visit only confirmed what a great school Greenfield Community School is. Without any doubt, this is most certainly due to all of you, the excellent staff and the talented, hardworking students. I know you are all very pleased and proud to finally have your fully serviceable new sports pitch and I am anticipating many exciting sporting events taking place in the coming school year. It would be amiss of me not to mention the beautiful student artwork created by GCS students that is on display in our Taaleem Corporate office and is admired by all visitors alike. As you all take a well deserved break over the summer I want to wish you all a wonderful holiday with plenty of time to recharge your batteries so you can come back full of energy and enthusiasm. Swimming Gala Swimming has gone from strength to strength at GCS this year. First term saw us hold three school swimming galas for KG1 and KG2, Grades 1 to 4 and Grades 5 to 9. The school spirit was excellent with lots of cheering and supporting of fellow students. Results for the galas were as follows: Grade 1 to 4 1st Lime 2nd Orange 3rd Indigo Grade 5 to 8 1st Yellow 2nd Green 3rd Maroon Overall including points for participation: 1st Lime 2nd Yellow 3rd Green Most impressive of all was the number of students who participated in at least one race and the fact that over 60 individual records were broken this year, indicating how much our students swimming is improving. From the swim galas students were invited to join the swim squad who trained twice a week throughout the year. Our swim squad competed in a number of galas both in first term and again in third term and their results continued to improve throughout the year. We would to thank all the parents who supported the swim squad in getting students to and from galas and cheering them on from the sidelines. We would especially like to thank Mrs. Christine Kandil who helped Miss Catherine with swim squad training, working with our students on their breaststroke technique among other things. - Catherine Lockhart

House spirit trophy awarded to Yellow

Sports Day was another great success at Greenfield this year A great time was had by all students, parents and staff. Participation from all our students, parents and staff was excellent. Students rotated with their teams through 5 tabloid events, taking part in target throwing, egg and spoon, team long jump, obstacle course and bouncy ball relay. Students also took part in long distance running and sprints. Our parents participated in a 50m sprint with a bean bag between their knees. Thankfully this meant that we were able to keep all parents injury free. The day ended with a dress up relay in Arabic attire. One member of each team, was dress in traditional Arab attire one piece at a time, and had to race to the finish line with a carrying a tray with a coffee pot and cups. All the students showed great team spirit by making banners and waving flags in support of their team members taking part in the various events The overall winning team was the Yellow House, followed by Lime house in second and Green house in third. The team spirit award went to the Orange House. SPORTS DAY

Greenfield Community School, celebrated its second International Day on Sunday, November 30 2008. There were over 33 nationalities represented in the opening parade, followed by a day of celebrations from nations around the world. There was a diverse range of ethnic food on offer, and fabulous displays at each of the stands. The students had the opportunity to expand their knowledge by participating in activities that were relevant to each of the countries that were represented. Following the parade there were performances from 16 different nations on the big stage, and a fantastic session from the Dubai Drums. The live band “Off Rails” provided entertainment in the afternoon session. Greenfield Community School has a student population with 48 different nationalities, and a staff of 22 different nationalities. The diversity of our school population was truly reflected during this fantastic International celebration. International Day

Cricket is the fastest growing sport in GCS. The interest in this traditional British Commonwealth has gone beyond all national and historical boundaries. Over 40 boys and girls have taken up cricket this season. It is delightful to see the passion that the game is played with. The recent Indian Premier League on our television screens and the anticipation for the upcoming T20 World Cup has contributed to the popularity of the game amongst our students. GCS has built up strong ties with the elite coaching staff of the International Cricket Council and will in the future work in partnership with this body in ensuring that our coaches attend refresher courses. Various cricket matches were played in different age groups and our first team managed to progress to the finals of the Dubai Kwik Cricket League. Well done to these boys and a brave Melissa Dando from Grade 5. Their tenacity has shown that it is better to have a champion team than a team of champions. - Ben Van Rooyen

Football A new force to be reckoned with. “Who are these guys?” This question was asked many times during this year’s Dubai Sony Football league for primary schools. GCS burst on the scene of the very competitive premier football league for the top 24 football schools with a bang. It did not take long for schools to realise that GCS is a force to be reckoned with. The Grade 3 team played exiting football in all of their league matches and scored more goals than any other team in the league. On the day of the finals GCS advanced to the finals with easy. In the final match our stars lost 2 – 1 to Jess and GCS ended up finishing second out of 24 schools. Ryhan Stewart was also awarded the top player of the league. Well done to him. Our Grade 4 and 5 teams had mixed results with the Grade 4 team narrowly losing in the quarter finals. The Grade 6 team entertained the crowds right till the end of the tournament when their semi-final match went to a penalty shoot-out. It was only after 8 attempts from both sides that Wellington got the upper hand and progressed to the finals, which they won. To put things in perspective, GCS Grade 6’s finished third overall in Dubai. Legends in their own right! The dedication of the coaches played a vital role in the success of our teams. Well done to Messrs. Sebastian, Brad, Osama and Ben. -Mr. Ben

Rugby Rugby passion reached a high when GCS students got the knack of the game. As coaches we often say: “I can teach you skills but I cannot teach you courage.” Our job was made easy with boys that have shown a lot of courage this year. Although we never had the numbers to field an all Grade 4 team and had to use Grade 3 and 2 players to make up the numbers our Grade 4’s finished third in the league. Our Grade 3 team ended up second in the Dubai league and have built up a reputation for never giving up. The highlight of the Grade 6 rugby season is the DESS Easter tournament and our Grade 6’s prepared well for it. Unfortunately the tournament was cancelled due to bad weather and our boys ended up playing only two matches against Rashid School for Boys. Rashid School had to bear the brunt and GCS scored 14 tries against them in two matches. A special thank you to Mr. Sebastian for his patience with the Grade 1’s and 2’s and to Mr. JoffreyMackett for helping with the coaching of the older children. -Mr. Ben

Environment Club The environmental club’s aim is to make Greenfield Community School a greener place. The small things that our group does will help the kids in our school become greener citizens in the world. We are six members in the group and we aim high in terms of getting green. In our extracurricular activity we did a lot of arrangement of the recycling materials. We created a Reusing Centre which is a small designated place in our school. We used small and big cardboard boxes for sorting out the materials. The purpose behind this centre was to help collect any recyclable materials from students and parents, sort them out according to materials, have them ready to be used by all the grades for projects, arts and crafts, and experiments. GCS Reusing Centre is well known among all the school's members and it has come in handy for almost all the grades. It has also given a strong message of the reusing concept.

This club started as an Extra Curricular Activity in the second term with 6 girls who put a lot of effort and were dedicated to spread a green message to all the students. We stopped using cups starting from May 17th.

Junior Basketball KG2, Grade 1,2 and 3 had a lot of fun playing basketball !!

Drama Club Drama comes from the Greek word to mean action. This year the Drama Club was alive with action. With weekly pantomime, role-playing and improvised skits the students were given the opportunity to unlock their imaginations, be creative and have fun. Drama is one of the best forms of human expression and communication.

Manic Mondays BEST ECA EVER!!!! THANK YOU! During Term II a whole lot of girls joined a club called MANIC MONDAYS. We started our club with a scavenger hunt to kick things off! Ms Lubna, Sonette & Farin crooning away in a Karaoke session !

Then we did variety of things like sing, dance, play sports, debate and the biggest was that we took on a role of designers and designed our own outfits! Manic Monday was such a big hit that it continued in Term III as Super Sonic Sundays! We are planning to finish our designs and continuing next year! - Suaad

During Manic Mondays we had lots of fun! We danced, sang, played softball, American football, and designed outfits! I would definitely join next year! - Carla One of our activities was a debate on “Homework— Good or bad?” I was on the proposing side which meant I was for the notion of homework! Our debate was very heated and we didn’t want to finish! We also played softball which was real fun! HOT BUT FUN! In Manic Monday also known as Super Sundays we danced, ate and had lots of fun! Hope we have something like this in MYP next year! - Tracy

German ECA This year, we had lots of fun practicing our German speaking, reading and writing skills! We met every Tuesday to work on a variety of tasks which enabled the students to use the German language in a fun and stress-free environment! Non-native speakers learned along with native German speakers and because of this, helping each other was an integral part of our classes! Well done, everyone!!!

Language Arts Club In this Extra-Curricular-Activity students can pick their preferred activity. Most participants did bead-artwork and designed jewellery like bracelets, necklaces and earrings.

From the Health Center In the health centre I have focused on the positive aspects of health. Health is the absence of disease and infirmity, so yes; being healthy is being happy, active, having friends, getting sufficient sleep and being able to concentrate. The correct types of food eaten and in the correct quantity are equally as important as getting exercise most days of the week. As part of the School Health ‘curriculum’, as School Nurses, we have to try and increase the daily physical activity of the children. My health initiative, to run daily with the children has been enormously successful and even gained a level of media profile! I have been delighted to see so many children participate and thrilled to have had such great parent participation as well. Thank you! What has been so pleasing is to see the children benefitting from the programme in so many varied ways. Many now enjoy exercise, are more co-ordinated, can now skip, are fitter and have a far better attitude towards looking after their bodies. We had a major hand washing drive, attempting to get this done more often and correctly. Feedback from the parents was that the children learnt something! We had a dental hygienist come and give an interactive talk to all the children. They each left with a goodie-bag and having had the basic principles reinforced. We have enforced our No Hat No Play policy, protecting our children from the harmful effects of the sun. The wider-brimmed hats protect the children’s necks and ears more effectively. We had the Moorfields Eye Hospital come and do vision screening at our school. Out of those who elected to take this up, we had a 20.4% failure rate. How great to have identified so many of our children with poor vision, who can now be investigated further. We do hope that in the coming year more parents will opt to take up this initiative. I have contributed from a health education perspective within the classroom, as and when the units of inquiry have permitted. I emphasize at every opportunity that health is being well and maintaining our health. We established a good working relationship with our school doctors and visiting the clinic has proven to not be an anxiety-provoking experience! - Nurse Alison Fawcett

The beginning of this school year saw me and my new assistant LiesleJoubert unpacking our order from Follett, our main supplier of library materials, and we discovered, to our surpise, that we will soon need more library shelves to accommodate all our books! Throughout the year I have also been trying to master Destiny, our library’s computer system, and teach the students how to search for books and the information within them. My library skills lessons ceased, however, when Liesle returned to South Africa in February, though while she was here we organized GCS’s Book Week and invited our friends at Network Marketing services to hold a book fair and to bring the ever popular Barney with them. We were honoured to also have local author, Linda Davies join us– our older students hung on her every word as she explained to them how she goes about writing a book, and encouraged them to also become writers. In April, long time Dubai resident Debi Evans, our “Dragon Lady” (pictured, in the library) returned to GCS to promote her 4th book in the Secret Society of Dragon Protectors series, The City Guardians, and we were all convinced that dragons really do exist , hiding in dragon-shaped objects. May 26 proved that staff, friends, parents and students really can work together to pull off a multi-faceted event, when GCS hosted the Speech Competition. The KG area was transformed into two speaking venues, where guests were greeted by student councilors, entertained by talented students, catered for by Ms Sonnette’s husband, and treated to enthralling speeches written and delivered by the best public speakers from six Taaleem schools. TheresiaKyalo from Grade 7 did GCS proud by winning the senior section with her speech about How To Beat A Bully.

The choir performed just before the Winter Holiday. They entertained the school with various songs related to aspects of a rainbow. Songs like “Rainbow Express” and “Rainbow Connection” reminded us that we belong to an International Community in GCS.

Middles school art which covers grades 7 & 8 explored multiple units covering a wide variety of materials and techniques. Some of these units were based on art history, intercultural awareness, visual themes and techniques to accomplish a visual communication. Wherever possible, complimented the other middle school topics and questions. All students work in their Developmental Workbook (DW) on a weekly basis, exploring the creative process, journaling this process with images, and reflecting on what they have personally discovered. Some of the memorable projects Ceramics, sculpture, surrealism, drawing, painting, print making and Pop Art.

French (language B) This has been a very exciting year for the French Department. There has been a lot of hard work, a lot of progress and a lot of fun with the French classroom always buzzing with activity — Yvonne

The new language B students who did not know a word of French a few months ago now have an extensive vocabulary and are confident enough to use it expertly. Our older students can talk and write about themselves at length and with confidence. They also enjoy visiting the IT lab and working with French CD ROMs and French web sites or using the interactive whiteboard in the French room. With the younger ones, we did a lot of hands-on activities like language games, role-plays and of course we were learning many songs.

During this year the students did a lot of presentations and created posters related to their Units of Inquiry. Quite a few students have joined during the year and they have all settled well in their classes with the help of their teachers and fellow students. Bravo!

French (language A) It has also been a successful year for the Language A students (advanced or native French speakers).The small size of the groups in most Language A classes allowed for very productive work. The younger students focused especially on reading, writing and speaking while French literature, theatre and poetry were studied with the older students. All enjoyed singing and playing language games, reading in the French corner of the library, working in the IT lab and on the interactive whiteboard. Extension work such as cooking classes and mathematics in French were also available. At GCS, the Francophones are represented by teachers and students from all around the world: France, Switzerland, Canada, Belgium, Mauritius, Senegal, Lebanon, Austria to name but a few. It is great to see such a diversity forming one French community! -Florence Larpent

English as an additional language

A BUSY YEAR IN THE EAL CLASS. It has a been a busy year in the EAL classroom. We have had new students join us throughout the year from all different parts of the world. The EAL students have spent time learning about the ocean, the rainforest, our school, our community and the jobs people do. The students have all worked hard to learn English and we have had fun exploring the language together.

I like to live in Dubai because here it is hot. I can play football and swim. In Russia it was cold and the streets are dirty. We can’t play so much. I like to live in Dubai very much. Grade 2 students are engaged in colour activities. They write about their own hair, eyes etc colours and compare the result with each other. Grade 3 are working on food items. They have brought something to eat and drink and at the same time to write and draw about their favourite food. Grade 4 advanced level students are using accusative and dative cases to their written assignment. The Beginners are writing and drawing about their own house and furniture. German B

German B - Intermediate Grade 7 German B intermediate is always working hard, as you can see in the pictures. We like discussing, joking (yes, in German!) and interactive activities (check our blog germangcs.edublogs.org).

KG 1 KG1 a caring classroom in which the children were emotionally safe and secure. KG1 a place where the children developed the sense of belonging to a group of people that cared for them, valued them and accepted their individual differences. - Virginia Dugand

Children participated in many various activities and we had a lot of fun throughout the year. They learned to be more independent and they developed a positive self-esteem.

SURPRISED SAD ANGRY EXCITED HAPPY UPSET In our Unit of Inquiry “How we express ourselves’ we learned that we can communicate our feelings through the arts. We were able to understand that we can express our feelings in many creative ways and that we can experience different art expressions as singing, dancing, painting and dramatizing . We learned that when we express ourselves, we let other to know how we feel inside! and that creative expression can take many forms.

KG 2 Welcome to the KG2 Yearbook page. We have had a lovely year and everyone has thrived. We learnt about Families and Friends, Clothes, Plants, Helpers in our Community, Stories and Transport in Units of Inquiry lessons. We also did lots of Math and even more reading and writing! Helping Hands KG2 learnt about helpers in our community in term 2. They visited The Market and interviewed people who work at the hair dressers, bank, travel agent, optician, doctor’s and vet’s surgery. Building on from this they visited The Premier Inn in Dubai Investment Park. They were shown how to set a table, make a bed and then they had a go, some with hilarious results! During class time the children used their communication skills to interview members of our school community. Even one of our KHDA inspectors had the privilege of being interviewed by KG2!

As well as interviewing, the children were busy researching about different jobs. Their research proved to be useful as later they chose to represent a job at the KG2 Job Fair. At the Job Fair they dressed up as their chosen helper, talked about the role played by the person and the tools used. Parents and grandparents came and were very impressed by the children’s knowledge.

Grade 1LR It is amazing how quickly this year has flown and what an incredibly special year it has been. It has been a year filled with excitement and amazement. When reflecting upon the year it is astonishing how much work we have managed to fit in! - Laura Reynolds

We started the year learning all about 'Animals and their Babies'. We loved finding about the creatures we share our planet with and how we can help to keep them safe. We learnt about animals from many different parts of the world, including: desert animals; polar animals; ocean animals; and jungle animals. We went on a fun filled trip to Al Ain zoo and got to see first-hand all of the animals we had been studying. “I liked making animals from the North Pole and the Desert.” - Mathilde H “It was incredible to see crocodiles!” - Leila “I loved our trip to the zoo.” - Patryk

Our second UOI was 'Celebrations Around the World'. What an enjoyable unit; one of Grade 1LRs favourites! We learnt about both personal and cultural celebrations, these included: Diwali; Chinese New Year; Weddings; New Births; Eid; Christmas; and Birthdays. This interesting and thought-provoking unit culminated in a day of celebrations. We played traditional games from around the world, made and sampled different foods and presented our brilliant work to our parents.

The next UOI that we investigated was 'What’s the Weather Like?' We found out that the weather can be quite varied in Dubai; it's not just sunny! In fact, we became obsessed with the weather! We studied weather reports and made our own forecasts. We made our own weather instruments and used them to study the weather every day. We also learnt all about why the weather changes, it proved to be a very complex process! We managed to fit in a trip to Ski Dubai where we experienced snow; it was -4° c! After all our hard work over the unit we thought it only fair to share our findings in assembly. We wrote our very own assembly script and put on a fantastic show.

'Healthy Eating' proved to be not only a very useful UOI but also great fun! We learnt all about what constitutes a healthy lifestyle; we found that it was important to take care of both our bodies and minds. We all took turns in providing morning snack, enabling us to try a wide variety of healthy, delicious treats from all over the globe, yummy. We also tried to get more active, some of us started running with Nurse Alison and have maintained it ever since. We learnt all about how the digestive system works, as you can imagine we relished that... We celebrated the end of our unit by hosting our very own 'Healthy Fun Fair'. It was a roaring success. Not only did we raise money for charity but we educated the rest of the school about keeping healthy.

Our penultimate UOI was 'Signs, Symbols and Codes'. We soon realised how important signs and symbols are to help us communicate effectively. We discovered that you don't even need to be able to read to understand most signs. We had a great time cracking and writing codes. We discovered that for some people signs, symbols and codes are a necessity. We tried using only sign language for a day; it's amazing how inventive you can be if you need to convey a message! After walking around our school and it's vicinity we decided that we wanted to take action to make our school a safer place. We drafted a proposal and then presented it to Mr. Ciro and Ms Lesley; they thought we had some really good ideas and are trying hard to implement them where appropriate. Our final UOI was 'Toys: Let’s Play Together!' We found out that people have always valued their leisure time. It seems to get even more precious the older we get… We had a wonderful time speaking to elder members of our family about how they used to spend their leisure time as children. We compared and contrasted toys old and new. People were certainly more inventive before plastic came along! We designed our own toys, puppets, puppet theatres and games. We then constructed them using materials from the reusing centre. It really was a great way to finish the year!

Wow, what a year! To better state that- what a GREAT year! We have covered a lot of material and participated in many fun and exciting projects. We started out going to the Al Ain Zoo. Our UOI was Animals and their babies, and children had a chance to see at first hand how they live, what food they eat etc. Do you still remember how hot it was on that day?  but we all got rewarded with a cold drink and some of us even went and bought an ice cream at the kiosk. Our next adventure was the International Day. We were shown lots of performances, tasted different foods and were given information on the different countries; not to mention all the beautiful national dresses we were able to see! Shortly after that we had the Swimming Gala and the Sports day. Both were so much appreciated by children, teachers and parents alike. Well done to all the teams! For our UOI on “Weather”, we went to Ski Dubai which was a nice change to the hot weather and the children truly enjoyed the cold fun! For our Unit “Healthy eating” we took the children to the Organic Cafe, and they had the opportunity to enjoy organic food. The staff of the Organic cafe were well amazed at how much our children can eat and were busy serving and re-serving!  We had some very exciting assemblies with “Girls for all seasons” as well as our school play “The Rainbow Fish”. I liked Sports day because I had so much fun at it. We did racing, playing, bouncing balls and playing games. Animals and their babies In this unit we focused on our responsibilities towards sharing the planet with the animals. We also looked at different types of animals and their babies. The children made beautiful posters, in groups, reflecting on how to save different animals. One of the groups thought of designing a poster to save Sammy the shark whale. By the end of this unit the students were able to show great empathy towards animals. Celebrations Around The world This was such a fun unit and we all got to share our personal and cultural celebrations together. The children were encouraged to freely express themselves on how they would like to celebrate different personal celebrations. We also looked at how each country celebrates same occasions differently. This helped the students to be open-minded and work towards being tolerant. What’s The Weather Like? We did lots of research in this unit. We’ve looked at the earth, the equator, northern and southern hemispheres to inquire about seasons and the reasons behind having opposite seasons across the equator at the same time. We also looked at how living things adapted in changes in weather. By the end of this unit the children were very knowledgeable and deserved to be called inquirers. It helped them develop their curiosity nature about how the world work.

Healthy Eating What an important unit that was! It has really made a difference in the children’s lifestyle. Most of the lunch boxes looked different at the end of the unit than how it used to be at the beginning. Majority of the students have learnt to be risk takers and tried new food during our “Snack Sharing” time. They have also learnt that having a healthy lifestyle is not only achieved by eating healthy but by exercising and staying clean as well. Learning about the digestive system was a successful topic. Toys / Let’s Play Together This is the most unit liked by the students. Creating a class toy shop was a lot fun. The students made their own money and got a chance to buy toys from the shop to play with lunch break time. This helped them develop their maths skills related to money. In this unit we also looked at the value of play and the importance of playing different games comparing old and new toys. The students interviewed their parents and/or grandparents about the toys they used to play with when they were young. Signs, Symbols & Codes Studying about sign language and Braille were two examples of the specialized systems we studied during this unit. We were also able to figure out the shapes used for specific signs and that the same shapes were used in most of the countries. The children showed to be reflective when writing about what might happen if the signs didn’t exist.

Field Trips Al Ain Zoo & Ski Dubai: Where else can you find a place colder than Ski Dubai here in the UAE? This is why we chose to go there when working on our “What The Weather Like” UOI.

Organic Food & Café What a YUMMY trip that was. It linked very well with our “Healthy Eating” UOI and we absolutely loved the food there. It was hard to choose between cereal with milk or scrambled eggs.

Grade 2MM A note from the teacher’s desk… I thought long and hard… is there a single moment in this class that I would be able to forget. I could not. It’s possibly been the most memorial year of my teaching experience. We have enjoyed our journey together and are all ready to move on. The best part for me, was to see the students progress and make leaps and bounds throughout the year. It has been a delight to see each child grow in many ways. Music around the world was such an exciting unit. Just learning about the genres of music allowed us to explore the wonderful talent hidden within each one of us. The Dubai Drums led us to play a variety of African beats.

These are my friends when I was in the swimming gala. I had lots of fun with all my friends in Grade 3. We even went on a field trip to Children’s City, because it was part of our Unit of Inquiry called “The Senses”. It was fun, because Ms. Anna taught us how to walk without looking, just like the blind people using a walking stick. We had many fabulous parties during the year to celebrate my friends birthdays and also to say good-bye to some of our fellow students. Every morning we also read a book on the carpet or at our desks. Even Mathematics was fun! During the Unit of Inquiry called “Measuring Time”, we visited IBN Battutta Mall and saw lots of different clocks and how they work. I remember the “Pajamas Day” and “Casual Day”. We all looked so funny! During our Unit of Inquiry called “Where in the World are We” I made my own globe in the DT Lab. by Fatin Student Speak

The biggest change moving in to Grade 3 was moving upstairs. We had two grade three classes this year so some of my friends from grade two were in the other grade three class but I made lots of new friends quickly and still got to see all of my old friends. My Math skills are improving and I may even be starting to like it, just a little bit. All of our field trips were brilliant. My favourites were our trips to Children’s City and IbnBattuta Mall. Our building and architecture Unit of Inquiry was my favourite, I had great fun. Making my own structure was awesome. Winning the award for the most creative structure and having it pass all of the tests made the hard work worthwhile. I have enjoyed all of my teachers and have learnt so much in all of the different classes. My sport skills, speed and stamina are improving and I have really enjoyed basketball. I even enjoyed running in the morning with Nurse Alison (sometimes). My reading is fabulous, which helps as I love to read and I have really noticed that my drawing skills are much better too. Times tables and working on my handwriting are going to keep me busy during the summer though, as I am sure life in grade four is going to be tough. Thanks Ms Sonnette for such an awesome year! In September I started grade 3. Miss sonnette toll us that we were going to make scrapbooks so we started making them. The first page was First day of school. Miss sonnette took a picture Of us to put in the middle of the page then we had to put September on the next page every. Time a month started we get the page and then we decorate it .In grade 3 the first unit of inquiry was community’s .Our project was to make a community .in math we were learning how to manage money It was a very fun uoi.the most exiting unit was just imagine in that unit how our senses work .now in pe we are Howe down throw down and gymnastics. Since our new unit of inquiry is just imagine we are looking at fables, fairytales, myth and legends, morels of stories. My Yearbook is about sports, field trips, class work, DT Lab and lots of other things. In sports, we did lots of things. First, I want to talk about the football squad. I was part of the team in the football squad. It was the second year of school so new people came to the team. The people in our team were Ryhan, Dave, Anthony, Mais, Sama, Sultan, Tristan, Liam, Lukas and Ahmed joined at the third match. We were second place in the football squad. Now I’m going to talk about cricket. We played our matches and we were third of all the schools in Dubai. Now I’m going to talk about swimming. In this swimming gala, me and Dave were doing the relay’s vs other schools and became second because we came second in all our races and relay’s. Now, I’m going to talk about another subject. This subject is about our field trips. We went to IbnButtuta. We went to IbnButtuta because our unit of inquiry Measuring Time. We also went to Children’s City. We went there because our unit of inquiry was the 5 Senses. Now I’m going to talk about another subject. This subject is our class work. We did lots of things for our class work. In this year we did lots of fun stuff, but I’m going to tell you some of the stuff. In the first term we had the football season. Sultan, Ahmed, Anthony, Liam, Dave, Lukas, Sama, Mais and my self were in the Grade Three team. We won 7-0 in the first match vs Jess Arabian Ranches. The second match against Wellington International we also won 5-2. In the 2nd term we played in the finals of the tournament. We came in second place overall. In second term our Unit of Inquiry was “Measuring Time”. The project was to write and perform a play about time. The other Unit of Inquiry was “Senses”. In the third term we had “Architecture and Design”. We had to build a structure that can hold 200ml of water, 1kg weight and 30 seconds of full blast wind from a fan. The overall winner was Riley. Our class also made a collage of a “City Skyline”. For our last Unit of Inquiry “Just Imagine”, we are going to learn about fables, myths, legends and fairy tales. There is also a GCS talent show. Ryhan and Ruben are in a band called the “Sparkling Fairie”. We also played cricket “friend-lies” vs schools, but we lost all our matches. We lost our matches but played very well. I was in the DT Lab to build a shop and I took a group photo with me friends. We had a Swimming Gala. It was amazing! I think I was the fastest swimmer in my race. I worked on the globes and enjoyed it so much. I also attended the “International Day” and I was supporting my home country, Jordan. The “Sports Day” was amazing. I was with the red team. We went to IBN Battutta mall and visited the time machine and food court. I worked very hard on my shelter. I was reading with Yaas in the classroom . My friend Dave left the school to go back to Australia. We had a “Good-bye party for him. My teacher took some photos for me. It’s for my own website I am busy setting up. by Yazan

My favorite project was building ‘My Shelter’ the best thing that I enjoyed was making and baking the clay that I used. The parties we had for the people that left school made me sad. There were a few swimming galas, I was in the greenteam, our theme song was 2468, who do they appreciate, green, green we’re mean, green, green the winning team. The school had a crazy hair and hat day, pajama day and a house color day. It was lots of fun! On pajama day I brought my teddy dog.Another one of my favorite things is one of our fieldtrips to Children’s City. My class and I, had a great time learning about the senses in a fun way. These are all of my favorite things I did during grade 3. The first UOI was Communities, and our big project was making a community out of card board and other recycled materials. We had a field trip to our local shopping mall, the Market. We went shopping for our parents and interviewed a shop assistant. The next thing I really liked was the swimming gala. I liked it because we had lots of fun during the races and we really enjoyed ourselves. Our second UOI was “where in the world are we”. The project we did was making a globe. You made it with a blown-up balloon, which you covered with paper Marché. When it was dry we drew the countries and painted it. It was really hard because you didn’t know where to start with the countries. But once you started it wasn’t that hard. We also made a travel brochure. I made one about Copenhagen. It was very fun and interesting. I learned a lot about Copenhagen and it was enjoyable doing the creative work. The third UOI was “measuring time”. Our project was to do a presentation about measuring time. Mine was about how to tell the time, how a clock works and how you measured time in olden days. I made a very beautiful watch, very creative, out of card, stickers and beads, and off course a string. Our mums and dads came to see our presentation, and I even did mine in assembly. Our forth UOI was “the five senses”. We learned about hearing, seeing, feeling, smelling and tasting. Miss Anna was helping in the class at the time and she had once taught blind children. She showed us how to walk blind folded with a “blind stick” and the whole class had a go. I even went down the stairs, - it was spooky. But when you got used to it, it was all right. We went on a field trip to children city, and it showed us all the senses and how they worked. The fifth UOI was architecture and design. Our project for this, was building a shelter. I had certain things it needed to cope with: it had to hold 1 kg of weight, it had to stand up against 30 seconds of electric fan blast and finally it had keep out water. My shelter passed the test. I had lots of fun making my house/shelter. During this UOI I was also very busy preparing my speech for the speech competition. I was chosen to represent grade 3 at the annual Taaleem speech competition. The subject of my speech was “in my spare time”. I chose to talk about reading, playing with my sister and cycling to the park. I was very nervous, but after it I felt proud. At the moment I am busy with our last UOI, which is “just imagine”, so I can’t tell you about that right now. Until now I think it is extremely fun. Grade 3 DB My wonderful little “Baboons”, “Funny how time flies, when you’re having fun!” – Isn’t this just sooo true?! It seems like only yesterday, when we kicked off Grade 3… and today, I just wanted you to know that it has been such a pleasure and privilege to watch your personalities unfold day by day! We have spent nine months together and grown so close! We have lived, loved, laughed, cried, played, studied, learned and enriched each other’s lives. Please remember that I will always be interested in your destiny – wherever you go, whatever you do and whoever you become! Have a happy and safe summer!!! Lots of Love, Miss Danni 

How we made our Shelter We started our new unit of inquiry called “ Architecture and Design “. We were supposed to build our own shelters. We had 3 weeks and 3 days to build it. There were six groups. Each group had to build their own shelters. All of them looked different. They were made of different materials. After we had built them we tested them, each one had to hold one kilogram, they needed to be windproof and waterproof. All six shelters came through the three tests. We used LEGO figures as people inside the shelters. We built it mostly in the DT LAB and we used lots of types of tools. We asked Mr. Ciro many times to help us in cutting big or wide pieces of wood. We were working mostly every day on our project. It was hard to make it without our parents, because it is hard to make a shelter when you are 8 years old! Our shelter was made of cardboard, plastic, metal (aluminium) and wood. We also used some paint, lots of glue, markers to mark were to cut the wood and staples. Some people got hurt when they were using splinters, hacksaw or hand drill. Most of the shelters were painted and lots of them had the Emirati flag and flags of countries that the builders came from. One shelter was a bit too shiny and one was completely rebuilt in the afternoon the day before the tests. The rebuilding team had only a few hours to build it up again. In the morning they went straight to Mr. Ciro’s office to seek for help in building it up. And then their shelter went through all the tests! It was fun to make a shelter with a partner. The Trip to the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi One of the things Islamic A/B grades 2-4 enjoyed this year was going to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque with our Islamic teacher Ms. Samia, as well as Mr. Osama, Mr. Deon and Ms. Farah. We had our field trip to the Grand Mosque on Wednesday, March 25th 2009. We went on a bus and we said a few prayers as we were departing. It took us 2 hours to get to the Grand Mosque and when we reached the Grand Mosque, the size of it was amazing and we knew this would be interesting. The Grand Mosque is located in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. Mr. Osama took us on a tour of the Grand Mosque. First, we went to the centre of the Grand Mosque and took a few photos. As we took the tour we thought the architecture and design was awesome. The floors and walls were made of beautiful marble with carvings of metal and gold, and in the prayer room was a huge fabric rug. There were also many stained glass windows and colourful chandeliers. It took us 2 hours to come back to school and we ate lunch in the cafeteria. That was our field trip. The Sheikh Zayed Mosque is the third largest in the world according to the General Secretariat Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC), the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture in Turkey. The two mosques in Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia are larger. The area of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque is 22,412 square meters. The 4 minarets are 107 meters high. An Iranian carpet placed in the main prayer hall, woven by about 1200 Iranian women, is 5000 sq m and is the largest hand-woven carpet in the world, made out of 35 tons of wool and cotton. Cost AED 30 million, delivered to Abu Dhabi in early August 2007. The seven chandeliers in the mosque cost about AED 30 million.The main dome is the largest in the world and is 87 metres high with a diameter of 32.8 metres. Our trip to children city. We went to children city with Mrs Danni. There were too many games, there were 20 games. We all played the games, if somebody needs help there were men to help you and those men told us how to play in order. We enjoyed a lot that day. After we played vs. girls me and Tristan let our team wins. Then we went to the buses and came back to our school and we Were happy a lot. by Ahmad Malik When we went to Choithrams As part of our “Communities” u.o.i., we went to The Market in the Green Community, to interview people. We had fun there because we took pictures of people who work at the shops. We asked questions like, “What’s your job?”, and, “Do you think your job is fun?” We went to the doctor, and she said, “My job is fun because I get to meet a lot of people.” Then we went into the supermarket and bought some food and some things that our parents gave us on a list. This was helping us with our maths. After that we had a treat and got some ice cream – it was tasty! It was fun because we were not at school that day. Communities Communities work as a team and they help each other by working together. Communities have family fun days. Living in a community creates a safe environment. While living in a community you can make lots of friends. by Karl van den Dool In February 2009 while it was still Spring, the Students of Grade 3 went to the Green Community Market to conduct a Survey on how the market operates. We divided ourselves into four groups and each group attended different shops to ask different questions. Some of the questions were from which countries did the workers come? How did they get their jobs? Where do they live? How did they travel to work and back? Were they enjoying their work? What was their opinion about standard of the market? We received a warm welcome from the Workers and they were very happy about our visit to the market. All the Workers were expatriates. We then went to the super market CHOITRAM where they gave us some goody bags. After this we returned to school and narrated the story of our Survey. by Sultan Al Aidarous International Day International Day was a day representing everyone’s country. You wear your country’s traditional clothes and then parade to show what country you are from. You look at and taste other countries selections of foods, do some tasting and get a sweet from their country. Some people performed on stage, it was fun for everyone! At the end, some people came and started to sing songs, there was a band and we danced to the music. Grade 3 Football Tournament This year the Grade 3 and 4’s were in a Football Tournament between all the schools in Dubai. The Grade 3’s played extremely hard and came 2nd against all the schools in Dubai. The 3rd Graders hero was Ryhan Stuart who scored in every match the Grade 3’s played in. Once we beat Horizon in the semi-finals on penalties and the whole team was celebrating like mad, but then in the finals against JESS Jumeirah we lost 1-0. After the game the whole team was very unhappy, but we still got the runners up medals and Ryhan Stuart got the top scorer award for 17 goals. CRAZY HAT/HAIR DAY On Sunday, 1st February 2009, we had at school a crazy hat/hair day .This is a day that you put on a crazy hat or you could put crazy stuff in your hair. It was really nice, because we were all different and we had lots of imagination and also we could do our own hats or we could colour our hair with hair paint that goes off when you wash your hair. When I arrived to Dubai a year ago I saw my cousin and she had a crazy hair day at her school, so I got really excited when we got the news that we were going to do a crazy hair day here at GCS. My mom did a lot of crazy things and she put lots of hair colours, it looked really weird! She put an orange colour on one side of my head, pink on the other one and green on the back. Then she did a couple of funky pony tails. When I got to school, I got so embarrassed cause all the boys where laughing at me, but I did not care, because I was very proud of myself! This was one of the greatest days that I have had in the last year and why I like my school, THE GREENFIELD COMMUNITY SCHOOL, so much! By Liam Spinks and Tristan Keuning The Parent Presentation Day (Measuring Time) Grade 3DB had a presentation on 18th February, 2009. The class was divided into five groups to build something that has to do with time. When the presentation started, almost everyone’s parents came to our class, and each group took a turn. The last group was my group, and we presented a cuckoo clock and a grandfather clock. The experience of the audience was that they enjoyed the presentation. One month later, my dad was so proud of me that he called me to show me a picture of me in the GCS newsletter doing the presentation. I decided to write about this subject because I had so much fun on that day. by Wissam I am in the swim squad! My favourite swimming gala was the DBS one. I was in the Grade 3 girls medley relay swimming the breaststroke. The race was very close for first place right up until the last moment and then we managed to win the race by the touch. Me and my team-mates were so excited as it was our first win in this race. I love the swim squad because we all really support each other and we are the loudest team at any gala! By YasmineKandil

Grade 4MM We do not remember days; we remember moments. ~CesarePavese, The Burning Brand This year in Grade 4 we have gone on an exciting learning adventure. We have discovered how to develop our ideas and express them in clear and interesting ways. We have explored the world around us, and most importantly we have grown as a class. Each of you has done your part and left a mark on Grade 4. Whether it was in a class presentation, taking part in an ECA, performing in assembly or representing our school, you have contributed to the development of Greenfield Community School. Grade 5LK Grade 5 students have had a fantastic year with their Units of Inquiry. We have looked at six different Units one of which we chose to do as an Exhibition Unit. The Exhibition is on “From Conflicts to Peace” and we studied and researched the effects of peace and conflict on a Society from different perspectives. The Grade 5 students have developed into young mature learners who have become wonderful inquirers with a great sense of integrity and I am proud to have been a part of their young lives. They will now begin a new year in MYP and continue with their development as role model global citizens. - Lubna

Highlights of the Adventure Camp

Grade six had a joint project with Peter and Thomas’s mom. We decorated a gingerbread house with frosting and candy.

Working on exhibitions takes a lot of research, effort and hard work

Moving into Middle School normally brings a lot of changes and challenges for students. The ability to work independently is normally the biggest challenge for students. Most students have grown in their ability to work independently and have taken ownership of their own work and time management. On the whole I believe the children had a good year in Grade 7. School life is not all about academic progress and our aim at GCS is to nurture our students’ development on academic, social, cultural and physical areas. -Ben Van Rooyen
