Midnight (11:59 pm), Sunday, June 10th
, 2012
True/False Questions carry 3 points each, Multiple Choices carry 4 points each and
the Essay type questions carry 7 points each. The total is 125 points.
True / False Questions (Type T for true and F for False)
Chapters 1 and 2
1. The weight of a Hamburger patty is a Discrete variable.
2. If we examine all items from the population, we are conducting a Census of the
population.
3. When we wish to summarize the proportion (or fraction) of items in a class we
use the frequency distribution for each class.
4. When establishing the classes for a frequency table it is general rule that the
more classes you use the better your frequency table will be.
5. If we sample without replacement, we do not place the unit chosen on a
particular selection back into the population.
6. Letter Grade is an example of an Interval scale variable.
Chapter 3
7. The income distribution is skewed to the right; therefore the Median Income
must be greater than the Mean Income.
8. The range of the measurement is the largest measurement minus the smallest
measurement.
9. The median is said to be less resistant to extreme values.

Chapter 3
10. All of the following are measures of central tendency except the
A. Median
B. Range
C. Mean
D. Mode
11. Time to degree has become a "hot" topic with federal legislators. At one state
university it was necessary to do a quick calculation when one of the local
congressmen called the president. Twenty students were randomly selected from
the most recent graduating class and the number of semesters they were enrolled
was calculated (mean=9.6) 7, 8, 10, 11, 8, 6, 10, 9, 9, 8, 13, 12, 8, 11, 11, 14, 8, 7,

D. Skewed to the left
13. If one intends to compare the relative variation between two samples involving
two different quantitative variables with different measurement scales, then the
most appropriate way is to compare the two samples:
A. Standard deviations
B. Variances
C. Coefficient of variations
D. Ranges
E. Interquartile ranges
14. In a statistic class, 10 scores were randomly selected with the following results
were obtained: 74, 72, 77, 77, 71, 68, 65, 77, 67, and 66. What is the median?
A. 71.5
B. 72.0

D. 71.0
E. 74.0
Essay Type Questions (7 points each)
Chapters 1 and 2
1. Consider the following data on distances traveled by people to visit the local
amusement park.
Distance Frequency
1-8 miles 16
8-15 miles 12
15-22 miles 10
22-29 miles 8
29-36 miles 4
Expand and construct the table adding columns for relative frequency and
cumulative relative frequency.
5
2. For the above Table (in question 1) construct the histogram of frequencies, plot
the frequency polygon and the Ogive curve using Excel.
3. Fill in the missing components of the following frequency distribution
constructed for a sample size of 50.
(Use simple calculator and knowledge about frequency table)
4. The number of weekly sales calls by a sample of 25 pharmaceutical salespersons
is below: 25, 55, 45, 35, 35, 30, 25, 45, 35, 30, 33, 28, 46, 31, 38, 41, 48, 38, 27,
29, 37, 33, 30, 40, and 50. Construct a histogram and plot the frequency polygon.
(Use Excel: Instructions given in Instructions Set2 and also in Textbook Appendix
2 of Chapter 2).
5. Math test anxiety can be found throughout the general population. A study of
116 seniors at a local high school was conducted. The following table was
produced from the data. Complete the missing parts. (Round the frequencies to the
nearest whole number. Note that cumulative relative frequency is shown as Cum
Freq Dist in the last column)
Chapter 3
6. The following frequency table summarizes the distances in miles of 100 patients
from a regional hospital.
Distance Frequency
0-2 40
2-4 30
6
4-6 20
6-8 10
Calculate the sample variance and standard deviation for this data (since it is a case
of grouped data- use group or class midpoints in the formula in place of X values,
and first calculate the sample mean).
