I was never a child that had a dream career, a dream job; my dream was to be happy in
whatever sense happiness meant to me. I was born December 30, 1980, right on the border of
two years and that has been the essence of how I felt about choosing a career; always teetering
along the line, and never sure of the direction I wanted to take. I have always been a person who
used both sides of her brain; I was always logical and creative at the same time. This was a clear
reason why it was so hard for me to choose a career. One day while speaking to my husband,
about this issue, he brought up a very valid point. He stated “in what rule book does it state that
you only have to have one career, I say that you do what you love and let the rest fall into place.”
That was one of the most important days of my life because with that one sentence, it broke
years and years of confusion. That day I decided to pursue a career in Interior Design,
Psychology and Business. Four years later, I have an AA in Interior Design and BA in
Psychology, and a lot of options to choose from.
Many people believe that the professions of interior design and psychology have no
relation, but they are actually very much compatible, one complements the other. As an interior
designer, the base of the profession is interaction with the client. An interior designer should
have the skills to go into a complete stranger’s home, and by observing and communicating, be
able to design a space in accordance with what the client need and want in their space or their
home. So in doing this, it requires a lot of different skills that I have obtained while pursuing my
undergraduate degree in Psychology. Interviewing and communication skills (verbal and
nonverbal) are a couple of the skills acquired while pursuing my BA in Psychology, which are
very important in the interior design field as well. When first meeting with a client, it is a basic
interview in which you are the interviewer. In being the interviewer, knowing what questions to
ask, how to ask the questions and where to ask the questions are all essential to getting the most

accurate information. Also having the knowledge of the different styles of communicating and
knowing how to distinguish different communication styles is very important as well. These
types of skills are beneficial in the interior design field but learning to interact with people is
beneficial in any type of field such as Business, the next field I decided to conquer.
Fifty percent of interior design is psychology and the other half is business. Considering
me acquiring my AA in Interior Design was on the basis of me owning my own business, the
entrepreneur in me, I had to have some type of business knowledge; this is where the MBA in
Business come into play. When mapping out this full plan of doing all the things I loved in life, I
had to consider that this plan had to make sense. I am not a risk taker and although many
entrepreneurs are, I am one who also needs a plan B, C and D. Acquiring an MBA in Business
would allow me the versatility, knowledge and structure I needed to make this brilliant plan
work. An MBA in Business Management provides me with the business knowledge I need to
run my own business, and anyone else’s business. In acquiring an MBA in Business, I will build
my skills in management, networking, marketing and business strategies, along with the thirteen
years of administration experience I have, this would be a very successful and prosperous move.
So this is my master plan which it has taken me my whole life to come up with, my
whole life to realize my potential and now that I am finally here I don’t plan on stopping. So for
a recap, if you happened to have gotten lost, I have an AA in Interior Design, a BA in
Psychology and am pursuing an MBA in Business Management. Although, this might seem like
a strange connection, it actually makes a lot of sense. I currently own my own Interior Design
company, dealing with clients, Psychology is mandatory, dealing with business a MBA in
Business is mandatory, having a variety of careers to choose from, mandatory.
