2. The respiratory system is composed of:
• Nose
• Oral cavity
• Pharynx
• Larynx
• Trachea
• Bronchi
• Lungs
3. How the respiratory system works:
• When we breathe, we inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide.
• Oxygen enters the body through the nose or mouth.
• Then, it goes down the pharynx, past the larynx, and into the trachea which
is a tube that enters the chest cavity.
• In the chest cavity, the trachea splits into two smaller tubes called bronchi.
• Each bronchus divides another time forming the bronchial tubes.
• The bronchial tubes go directly into the lungs where they divide into many
smaller tubes which connect to tiny sacs called alveoli.
• The inhaled oxygen passes into the alveoli then diffuses through the
capillaries surrounding it, into the arterial blood.
• Meanwhile, the blood from the veins filled with waste releases its carbon
dioxide into the alveoli.
• The carbon dioxide follows the same path out of the lungs when you exhale,
as oxygen does when you inhale.
4. The respiratory system is important to the
human body because:
The respiratory system is important to the
human body because it takes in oxygen
which the body needs to function and gets
rid of carbon dioxide which your body can’t
use.
