Sharon Eswine: 32 Year Art Teacher Shares Her Story
1. Hi Everyone,
I’m Sharon Eswine
This is me with my daughter and husband in North Carolina. I can’t believe
it but I have been an art teacher for 32 years! My husband has been a
science teacher for 42 years.
We both teach at Savannah Country Day School where I teach grades K-5.
Our daughter will be senior at SCDS next year.
2. Art Teacher
You might guess that I love teaching art since I’ve done it for more
than 30 years and you’d be right.
My students are smart and talented and they love art - how could I
not love it?
Left: My second graders are drawing plants outdoors.
Right: Third graders are working on one point perspective drawings
in the art room.
3. Artist
I’m sad to say it took me about 15 years to decide that I’d be a better art
teacher if I practiced what I preached. Since then I have been painting.
I am a plein air oil painter, which means I paint with oil paints outdoors. It
just sounds better if you say it in French.
Left: I am wearing the white hat and I’m with West Frasier (an artist who makes a
living at it) and my colleague Ann Jones, who teaches Middle School art. West was
our teacher for the day.
Right: We’re all cleaned up and standing with our paintings in the Jepson Center
in Savannah. As you can plainly see they are not hanging in the restroom as my
daughter speculated they would!
4. Camp Counselor
Every summer (up to last summer) I worked with my husband taking
students to various coastal sites and teaching them about the ecology of
the marshes and beaches.
In one activity we’d pull a giant seine net and learn about the creatures that
we caught. Of course we practiced catch and release!
Environmentalism is an area of interest for me.
I am also very interested in interdisciplinary studies and creativity.

5. Much to Learn
I think this course will be very good (and challenging) for me.
I look forward to knowing each of you better as we learn together
this summer.
