3. Step1
Cover a chapter in your study guide at least every two
days. At first skim through the chapter.
After skimming the chapter, re-read it with highlighter
and pen in hand. Highlight key text and make notes
in the margins.
4. Step 2
Review the chapter you just completed. With 3 x 5
index cards in hand start making flash cards with the
key information you highlighted and notes you wrote
in the margins.
Put a single question or topic on the front of each card
and the answer on the back.
Once you get that entire chapter on to 3 x 5 note
cards, quickly review them.
Repeat this for every chapter.
5. Step 3
Bring your completed note cards everywhere with you.
When you are on a break, walking the dog, or at lunch
review them. Review as often as you can.
Also, say the information out loud when possible, the
more of your senses you engage the better your
memory will be during the exam!
6. Step 4
Go to a quiet room, where you will not be
disturbed, with a blank sheet of paper and pen. Grab a
kitchen timer and set it for three hours and start
taking a practice test.
If you come to a question you’re not sure of try to
eliminate several of the answers. What do you know
about the question? Make your best guess and write
that question number down on your sheet of paper.
If you have time at the end, you can re-read those
questions you had trouble with. Often times and
answer is now perfectly clear.
7. Step 5
Grade your answers. For the questions you got wrong
or guessed at (even though you guessed correctly)
make new 3 x 5 note cards for those questions and
review all your new note cards as much as possible.
Take a least a day off to review ALL of your note cards
between sample test days.
Repeat steps 4 & 5 until the day before the test.
8. Step 6
The day before the exam is important. Don’t stay up too
late studying.
Eat a good meal for dinner and get plenty of restful sleep
(at least 6-8 hours). Also the morning of the test, make
sure you eat a good meal, but don’t stuff yourself. You want
that blood in your brain, not your stomach!
Get up a little early and get to your exam location about 30-
45 min before your test. Bring your note cards and review
them in your car before the test.
Bring a bottle of water with to the test so you can stay
hydrated.
