Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on an eight-by-eight checkered board. The goal is to capture the opponent's king, called checkmate. Players take alternating turns moving one piece at a time. Each piece moves differently - pawns move forward one square, knights make an L-shaped jump, bishops and rooks move diagonally and vertically/horizontally any number of squares, the queen combines bishop and rook movement, and the king moves one square in any direction. Games may also be played with a time control where the player loses if their time runs out.
