ARTS 102 • DESIGN AND COMMUNICATION
Communication
Communication unfortunately is not as simple as

                    “I say X and you hear X.”

What happens when a person [attempts to] articulate
a message to another? What happens when the
audience hears it? What effect does the medium have?
Message
Any signal or combination of signals that
serves as a stimulus for a receiver
Channel
The medium or vehicle through which
                     signals are sent
Noise!
Anything that interferes with a person’s
receiving a message as the source intended
               the message to be received
Sender to
           Receiver
The least difficult part of this concept is
definitely the medium (i.e. channel). This has
an effect on the intended message and is
often controllable. Any errors that occur in
the medium to impede the message are
                             generally fixable.
So that’s the
  easy part...
The hard part
     occurs at
 either end of
  the channel!
Source
Any person or thing that creates messages.
       Sometimes referred to as “sender”
Sending
Some amount of the sender’s psychology will
necessarily be present in any communication,
whether it be visual or spoken.
Receiver
Any person that receives a messages May
also be referred to as “viewer, listener,” etc.

A certain degree of interpretation will always occur when a message is received (not to
be confused with noise). One important point to realize is that your message can be
interpreted vastly differently than what you intended, and therefore clarity is paramount.
Encoding
The process of putting a message into a
code — for example, translating nerve
                impulses into speech sounds

The encoding process can be controlled, and using symbolism that
is free from cliché will help maximize the receivers’ clear
                                   understanding of your message
Decoding
The process of converting any encoded
message — for instance the sound of speech
                            — into thought

The decoding process cannot be controlled and all of a receiver’s
positive and negative associations with your choice of symbols will
color how the receiver interprets your message.
Assignment
We will be exploring how to properly send
a message, and the best way to do it.

You are to design a set of instructions in step by step set
of panels for how to cook, bake, or prepare any type of
food. Your design must be a total of six panels, no more
and no less. You may choose any recipe you would like. Be
very careful with your choice as we will revisit this again
                                        later in the course.
Assignment
A total of10 points are possible.
       5 for clearness and communication
                        3 for overall design
2 for following the directions correctly
