- SCoPE is an international, online community for anyone who is interested in educational research and practice. launched in fall, 2005 and we continue to grow, largely by word of mouth Our activities are free and open to the public Our core activity is monthly online seminars facilitated by volunteers in the community, and we also support special interest groups, both public and private, and events such as online workshops and conferences. I have been involved in SCoPE since the early design phase, and my role: keep my finger on the pulse of what’s happening on a day-to-day basis coordinate activities encourage open dialogue about what members want respond to the ideas and needs as they emerge through participation
- Started planning in 2004 Decided on Moodle for a platform CMS – some work to make it feel more like a professional community and less like a course management site Key here is involved members from the beginning, and continue to involve them in shaping the community

- At SCoPE we are often working with other organizations and communities to organize community activities. There is virtually no exchange of funds so this is a mutual exchange of support and services.
- Think of Moodle as a home base, but not as the community Intentional in design: participation on periphery, participation according to own time and interests Encourage openness – access to discussions, resources With so much accessible to members and potential members allows time to get comfortable, understand what SCoPE is about and get a feel for the culture before joining in Also – participation using tools that are part of members’ everyday practice
- Twitter monitor what SCoPE members are up to spread the word about SCoPE activities spread the word about what SCoPE members are sharing / offering
- LinkedIN started as a place to connect members who are interested in connecting others who are interested in employment in education or in connecting professionally on projects as more features became available added more, such as RSS feed of forum posts occasionally used by members to post information about events and opportunities
- Facebook a group and a page post events, news – often same content as twitter, but reaching different members
- Blip.tv began sharing videos at blip.tv serves as a way to distribute through other channels such as iTunes
- moderating newsletters social networking interface design web authoring research learning about and testing new technologies coordinating events saying thanks a lot! etc etc
