The characters are over the front of the
magazine title, this is because they are the
main feature and so are shown to be more
significant.
Because James McAvoy is in front of the
others and dead centre of the magazine
means that he is likely the main character.
A unique selling point would be that there are two
covers to collect. This shows in the film that there
are two sides, shown through the contrast of
house colours (a neutral blue and aggressive red).
Only serious collectors are
likely to buy both and for
regular buyers this is a
more ‘choose your side’
style cover.
‘The only magazine on set’ tells the consumer
that this is as close as they will get to finding
out about the film and is quite a big exclusive
making the magazine appear quite important.
Cover lines advertise other
features of the magazine for
people whom are not interested in
this film.
The unique selling point of this film is that
it is part of the X-Men films, this will
attract fans of the series as well as
newcomers.
The words ‘the moment’ would suggest that
something in this film explains a lot about the
other films and also leaves the audience
guessing as to what happens. By using the
word ‘our’ includes the audience and makes
the film seem just that bit more real.
The clean block capital letters suggest this
film is an action film.
The shine of the floor and the clean
and quite bare surroundings suggest
that this is at the beginning of the
stories and that everything is quite
new.
The fact that this poster has no date
could suggest that the poster is a
teaser.
There is no central character/star
suggesting that the characters are all
equals. However the ones closer to the
front are most likely the main characters.
Main character in centre of page, again
over the top of title ‘Empire’. This
signifies that they are the most
important person not only on the cover
but most likely in the film too.
House colours of font match the photo
and are colours taken from it. The
colour blue relates to sci-fi, the future
and is quite neutral. The title is also
changed to suit the colour of the photo. Cover lines are shown for people
whom are not interested in this film
but may be in the other features of
the magazine.
The unique selling point of this issue is
that the film featured is a Ridley Scott
film.
The words ‘The new Ripley’ tell the
consumer that this is a pretty important
character and one that is taking on a
large role in movie world. The fact that
this magazine is aimed at cinema goers
and passionate film watchers will most
likely cause the magazine to sell quite a
few more.
We as the audience cannot see whom is at
the bottom but the fact that they are at the
centre of the poster makes them quite
important, but next to the giant head quite
insignificant.
The font is white block capital letters,
although this is quite small it stands out
against the black. Ridley Scott uses
iconography by always using this font and
his posters and films are always very dark.
The posters are usually very minimal and the
object usually emits light.
The strap line ‘The search for our beginning
could lead to our end’, like ‘X-Men First
Class’ the strap line includes us as an
audience by using the word ‘our’ it also tells
the audience that there is a threat that could
succeed and makes the audience wonder
what that ‘thing’ is.
The poster only has about three colours
black, white and a green-grey that gives the
poster a ghoulish alien feel to it. The dim
lighting makes the face look more ghostly
and mysterious and makes it look quite
dangerous and intimidating more so than in
daylight.
Release date, cast and crew are shown at the
bottom of the film.
The unique selling point is that the film
is ‘from director Ridley Scott’
The whole cover is dedicated to this film,
no cover lines other than for this film.
The title has been edited to match
the films font and general design, it
also has dash lines to give a sense of
speed in the film.
‘Sequel of the year’ would suggest
that this film is pretty good and
would help sell the magazine to hear
about it.
There are three basic colours used
blue, black and white giving a
futuristic look to it, the bright blues
stands out clearly against the black
catching the consumers attention.
The central character is masked but
the image is moving and quick,
showing that the film is most likely
about action and special effects over
anything else.
The line ‘Behind the scenes with the
cast and crew’, lets the audience
know what sort of feature they have
about the film whether it be an
interview, review etc.
The words ‘Coming Soon’ suggest that
this is a teaser trailer.
The two characters mirror each other
and the way they face each other
suggests that they are opponents but
also equals as they are both at equal
distance from the camera.
The strap line ‘The only rule is
survival’ suggest this film is about
action and takes itself quite seriously.
The fact that the word ‘Tron’ is
written larger and much clearer
than ‘legacy’ suggesting that
whatever Tron is it is pretty
important, the iconography of the
font is carried on into other media
such as the SFX Magazine cover
on the last slide.
The bright light breaking through the
darkness gives an idea of technology
and computers it also gives the idea
of a light at the end of the tunnel.
Magazine cover shows synergy
between this and the film poster as
it has the same shot of Chris Pine
as the main focus of the cover.
Similar colours such as grey, black
and white are also used. The
background is also silver, again
hinting at the genre.
This also shows that there are 4
different editions of the magazine,
with various characters on the
front. This shows that there was a
lot of promotion for the film and
also synergy again as all those
shown on the poster have their own
magazine cover.
‘World Exclusive’ might draw in new
audiences to the film as people will see it
is a big film and might be more
interested in it. This along with it being
referred to as the ‘coolest film of 2009’
will draw in a bigger audience.
Title in a large, block font that
stands out on the black
background which will instantly
draw attention.
The unique selling point of this film is
the face that Star Trek is already an
established film.
The tagline ‘The Future Begins’ already clues
us into the genre of the film, as it suggests
that it will be a futuristic, space, sci-fi film.
The font used is bold and suggests a
space vibe. It is also silver which stands
out against the dark background of the
poster. The silver colour also links to
the genre of the film.
Sci-fi iconography is shown
here by the use of the
silver/black/blue.
The faces of Chris Pine, Benedict
Cumberbatch & Zoe Saldana also
make a good selling point for the film
as fans of those actors’ might be
more inclined to go and see the film.
Their faces are also a main part of the
poster indicating that they are main
characters in the film.
The space ships again suggest the
genre of the film but also might
suggest that a lot of the film will be set
on a space ship
Shown to be a big film as it is the cover
of the ‘Sci-fi Issue’.
‘Total Film’ looks to be broken of falling
away which again suggests that will be
some sort of explosion/destruction in
the film.
‘This Generation’s Matrix?’. This
comparison suggests the genre and
also might interest fans of ‘Matrix’ to
go and see ‘Looper’.
‘Exclusive’ might draw new
audiences in.
Synergy between the poster and
the magazine cover, as they both
feature Bruce Willis and Joseph
Gordon-Levitt.
Font is on a slant and has
shadowing, which makes it look as
though its moving, which again
might link to the idea of there
being time travel in the movie.
Colours instantly suggest sci-fi
film.
Tagline suggests that that there
might be some sort of time travel
involved in the film which hints at
the genre of the film.
Explosion of buildings might suggest
that some of the film will be set in a
city. Also might suggest action in the
film, and the way that the men are
coming out of the explosion might
suggest that they are the cause of the
explosions or are linked to them in
some way.
Names of the stars and
writer/director might draw more
audience in.
The unique selling point of this film is
Bruce Willis & Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
This is shown by them being the
centre of the poster(which also
features their names). This also
shows that they are main
characters.
Poster also shows their
Facebook page which might
interest some audiences, and
makes them more involved with
the audiences, and makes the
audience feel as thoughthey are
part of something
Film compared to ‘Avatar’ which will
convince audiences that it is a ‘must
see film’ again bringing in a bigger
audience.
Matt Damon featured to show that he is
a main character of the film, which
might suggest action, and also attract
different audiences.
‘Fights for the planet’ again suggests
that there will be some kind of
violence/action along with a sci-fi
film.
Matt Damon is shot in medium shot,
showing that he is the focus and that he
has power. The gun and his stance also
suggests power, suggesting that he will be
a powerful figure in the film.
Title stands out as second biggest font
on page, showing that this film is the
focus of this issue of the magazine, and
the latest film that they are featuring
Again, colours are centred around blue,
grey and blacks, linking to the sci-fi genre.
The unique selling point for this film is Matt
Damon. This is made obvious by him being
the focus for the poster and having his name
big and noticeable on the poster. This could
attract fans of Matt Damon.
Gun or some sort of weaponfeatured
which shows that there might be some
violence/action also featured in the film.
Smoke may also hit at some kind of
violence of destruction, this might attract
different audience to the film.
Title in a colour that contracts with the
colour of the background and in the
biggest font. This is to attract the eye to
the name of the film. The font is also
simple, but with a curved shape, again
suggesting a futuristic feel.
Spaceships in the background show the
sci-fi genre and also gives a futuristic
look to the poster
Names of stars put in a big font on the
poster to attract different audiences. Also
‘From the director of…’ will again draw a
bigger audience for the film if people
enjoyed their previous films.

Media magazines and posters

  • 1.
  • 2. The characters are over the front of the magazine title, this is because they are the main feature and so are shown to be more significant. Because James McAvoy is in front of the others and dead centre of the magazine means that he is likely the main character. A unique selling point would be that there are two covers to collect. This shows in the film that there are two sides, shown through the contrast of house colours (a neutral blue and aggressive red). Only serious collectors are likely to buy both and for regular buyers this is a more ‘choose your side’ style cover. ‘The only magazine on set’ tells the consumer that this is as close as they will get to finding out about the film and is quite a big exclusive making the magazine appear quite important. Cover lines advertise other features of the magazine for people whom are not interested in this film.
  • 3. The unique selling point of this film is that it is part of the X-Men films, this will attract fans of the series as well as newcomers. The words ‘the moment’ would suggest that something in this film explains a lot about the other films and also leaves the audience guessing as to what happens. By using the word ‘our’ includes the audience and makes the film seem just that bit more real. The clean block capital letters suggest this film is an action film. The shine of the floor and the clean and quite bare surroundings suggest that this is at the beginning of the stories and that everything is quite new. The fact that this poster has no date could suggest that the poster is a teaser. There is no central character/star suggesting that the characters are all equals. However the ones closer to the front are most likely the main characters.
  • 4. Main character in centre of page, again over the top of title ‘Empire’. This signifies that they are the most important person not only on the cover but most likely in the film too. House colours of font match the photo and are colours taken from it. The colour blue relates to sci-fi, the future and is quite neutral. The title is also changed to suit the colour of the photo. Cover lines are shown for people whom are not interested in this film but may be in the other features of the magazine. The unique selling point of this issue is that the film featured is a Ridley Scott film. The words ‘The new Ripley’ tell the consumer that this is a pretty important character and one that is taking on a large role in movie world. The fact that this magazine is aimed at cinema goers and passionate film watchers will most likely cause the magazine to sell quite a few more.
  • 5. We as the audience cannot see whom is at the bottom but the fact that they are at the centre of the poster makes them quite important, but next to the giant head quite insignificant. The font is white block capital letters, although this is quite small it stands out against the black. Ridley Scott uses iconography by always using this font and his posters and films are always very dark. The posters are usually very minimal and the object usually emits light. The strap line ‘The search for our beginning could lead to our end’, like ‘X-Men First Class’ the strap line includes us as an audience by using the word ‘our’ it also tells the audience that there is a threat that could succeed and makes the audience wonder what that ‘thing’ is. The poster only has about three colours black, white and a green-grey that gives the poster a ghoulish alien feel to it. The dim lighting makes the face look more ghostly and mysterious and makes it look quite dangerous and intimidating more so than in daylight. Release date, cast and crew are shown at the bottom of the film. The unique selling point is that the film is ‘from director Ridley Scott’
  • 6. The whole cover is dedicated to this film, no cover lines other than for this film. The title has been edited to match the films font and general design, it also has dash lines to give a sense of speed in the film. ‘Sequel of the year’ would suggest that this film is pretty good and would help sell the magazine to hear about it. There are three basic colours used blue, black and white giving a futuristic look to it, the bright blues stands out clearly against the black catching the consumers attention. The central character is masked but the image is moving and quick, showing that the film is most likely about action and special effects over anything else. The line ‘Behind the scenes with the cast and crew’, lets the audience know what sort of feature they have about the film whether it be an interview, review etc.
  • 7. The words ‘Coming Soon’ suggest that this is a teaser trailer. The two characters mirror each other and the way they face each other suggests that they are opponents but also equals as they are both at equal distance from the camera. The strap line ‘The only rule is survival’ suggest this film is about action and takes itself quite seriously. The fact that the word ‘Tron’ is written larger and much clearer than ‘legacy’ suggesting that whatever Tron is it is pretty important, the iconography of the font is carried on into other media such as the SFX Magazine cover on the last slide. The bright light breaking through the darkness gives an idea of technology and computers it also gives the idea of a light at the end of the tunnel.
  • 8. Magazine cover shows synergy between this and the film poster as it has the same shot of Chris Pine as the main focus of the cover. Similar colours such as grey, black and white are also used. The background is also silver, again hinting at the genre. This also shows that there are 4 different editions of the magazine, with various characters on the front. This shows that there was a lot of promotion for the film and also synergy again as all those shown on the poster have their own magazine cover. ‘World Exclusive’ might draw in new audiences to the film as people will see it is a big film and might be more interested in it. This along with it being referred to as the ‘coolest film of 2009’ will draw in a bigger audience. Title in a large, block font that stands out on the black background which will instantly draw attention.
  • 9. The unique selling point of this film is the face that Star Trek is already an established film. The tagline ‘The Future Begins’ already clues us into the genre of the film, as it suggests that it will be a futuristic, space, sci-fi film. The font used is bold and suggests a space vibe. It is also silver which stands out against the dark background of the poster. The silver colour also links to the genre of the film. Sci-fi iconography is shown here by the use of the silver/black/blue. The faces of Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch & Zoe Saldana also make a good selling point for the film as fans of those actors’ might be more inclined to go and see the film. Their faces are also a main part of the poster indicating that they are main characters in the film. The space ships again suggest the genre of the film but also might suggest that a lot of the film will be set on a space ship
  • 10. Shown to be a big film as it is the cover of the ‘Sci-fi Issue’. ‘Total Film’ looks to be broken of falling away which again suggests that will be some sort of explosion/destruction in the film. ‘This Generation’s Matrix?’. This comparison suggests the genre and also might interest fans of ‘Matrix’ to go and see ‘Looper’. ‘Exclusive’ might draw new audiences in. Synergy between the poster and the magazine cover, as they both feature Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Font is on a slant and has shadowing, which makes it look as though its moving, which again might link to the idea of there being time travel in the movie.
  • 11. Colours instantly suggest sci-fi film. Tagline suggests that that there might be some sort of time travel involved in the film which hints at the genre of the film. Explosion of buildings might suggest that some of the film will be set in a city. Also might suggest action in the film, and the way that the men are coming out of the explosion might suggest that they are the cause of the explosions or are linked to them in some way. Names of the stars and writer/director might draw more audience in. The unique selling point of this film is Bruce Willis & Joseph Gordon-Levitt. This is shown by them being the centre of the poster(which also features their names). This also shows that they are main characters. Poster also shows their Facebook page which might interest some audiences, and makes them more involved with the audiences, and makes the audience feel as thoughthey are part of something
  • 12. Film compared to ‘Avatar’ which will convince audiences that it is a ‘must see film’ again bringing in a bigger audience. Matt Damon featured to show that he is a main character of the film, which might suggest action, and also attract different audiences. ‘Fights for the planet’ again suggests that there will be some kind of violence/action along with a sci-fi film. Matt Damon is shot in medium shot, showing that he is the focus and that he has power. The gun and his stance also suggests power, suggesting that he will be a powerful figure in the film. Title stands out as second biggest font on page, showing that this film is the focus of this issue of the magazine, and the latest film that they are featuring
  • 13. Again, colours are centred around blue, grey and blacks, linking to the sci-fi genre. The unique selling point for this film is Matt Damon. This is made obvious by him being the focus for the poster and having his name big and noticeable on the poster. This could attract fans of Matt Damon. Gun or some sort of weaponfeatured which shows that there might be some violence/action also featured in the film. Smoke may also hit at some kind of violence of destruction, this might attract different audience to the film. Title in a colour that contracts with the colour of the background and in the biggest font. This is to attract the eye to the name of the film. The font is also simple, but with a curved shape, again suggesting a futuristic feel. Spaceships in the background show the sci-fi genre and also gives a futuristic look to the poster Names of stars put in a big font on the poster to attract different audiences. Also ‘From the director of…’ will again draw a bigger audience for the film if people enjoyed their previous films.
