- 12 years of experience of developing BI applications and presented our first MIS at CISG in 2001 hosted at the Belfry. Data warehouse been collecting student data since 2001.Decided Summer 2010 to upgrade our BI capabilities and implement QlikView as our reporting tool.The JISC bidding process allowed us to spend some time seriously thinking about ideally what we wanted to deliver and how this could add value
- Aware HESA were undertaking a study into how the sector can use benchmarking to improve organisational efficiency. Given our use of benchmarking activity over the years and my experiences in developing the Thames Gateway Knowledge Platform, a web based regional observatory, it made sense for us to look at developing a benchmarking appAt our project planning meeting, was struck by head of Strategic Planning indicating ‘Extracting data from HEIDI and making it easier to analyse would be a huge step forward’
- Front page of Benchmarking application with logos and description. Currently contains 14 datasets, comprising in the region of 3 million rows of data. Planning to add more data over the next year in terms of Research and other bespoke datasets such as our London Councils research.
- Each dataset is represented by a different colour tab and the coloured buttons on the LHS provide access to Meta Data as well as video training guides. An indication of the latest date of the data extracts is also provided for context.
- SCONUL data has been extracted from HEIDI (HESA online database) for the three years that are currently available. We’ve classified the data into 4 categories:1) Library Capacity2) Library Expenditure3) Library Usage4) Contextual DataWithin each of these categories, there are between 3-6 different data streams dependant on your choice.Users can select an individual institution on the LHS using the ‘Institution’ menu (bordered in Blue) and then compare it to the average for a type of HEI, location of HEI or another individual HEI (bordered in Red) or a combination of these. In addition, users can select to view the comparison as either a chart or as a table.
- This chart benchmarks the size of the collection in volumes for UEL compared to London-based former polytechnics.
- This view of the data examines the time-series for library expenditure per FTE user (£) for UEL over 3 years
- This table compares Loans per FTE user for UEL benchmarked against London-based former polytechnics and the table can easily be exported to Excel.
- Finally, we’re looking at some of the contextual data in terms of Number of FTEs for UEL compared to the average for London-based former polytechnics
