The program from
SMART Exchange I
would modify is a
Nutrition presentation
for first graders under
Health and Physical
Education.

3.
The objectives for
this lesson are
direct, but are two
advanced for first
graders. I would
reword the objectives
to help a 1st grader
understand.
Ex 1.) Be able to put
foods in the right
group on MyPyramid
and MyPlate.
4.
It goes into talking about the sites MyPlate
and MyPyramid and how we should read their
main charts. I would introduce the sites
themselves.
Choosemyplate.gov
There are different tabs like “Healthy Eating
Tips” or sites for kids to play and learn on
I would also print a placemat and have “fake
food” for the kids to sort on their plates.
This can all be found on the choose my plate
website
5. They begin by breaking down
the requirements and
examples of each food group.
I would show a chart of food
equivalents and proportions. Ex. 1
slice of bread= 1oz of grains
6.
It isn’t brought up in the original SMART
Exchange presentation, but I would also
introduce the USDA website.
http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usda/usdahom
e
You can click on the “for kids” tab and introduce
the different websites the government offers to
help kids be more active in their environment
and health.
Ex. There is a gardening site or “Food-A-Pedia”
to help kids look up nutrition information for
over 8,000 foods.
7.
This is the food-apedia site for you to
find the nutrition
information for the
different foods.
It is just one of
many resources
found on the USDA
website.
