Neonatal Care,[object Object],Feb 17 V. Lactation,[object Object],Feb 24 VI. Weaning,[object Object]
Weaning,[object Object],Removal of milk diet from young mammals,[object Object],http://www.slideshare.net/schoenian/weaning,[object Object]
Weaning age in sheep and goats,[object Object],Varies from 14 days to more than six months (natural). ,[object Object],Early < 90 days,[object Object],In a dairy sheep operation, it is common to wean lambs at 30 to 35 days of age. ,[object Object],When lambs and kids are artificially reared, it is common to wean them between 6 and 8 weeks of age.,[object Object],Late > 90 days,[object Object],Natural,[object Object]
Weaning,[object Object],There is no best time to wean.,[object Object],There are pros and cons to different weaning ages and systems.,[object Object],Weaning must be appropriate for the circumstances and production system.,[object Object]
There are many factors to consider when deciding when to wean ,[object Object],Age,[object Object],Season of birth,[object Object],Parasite problems,[object Object],Predator risks,[object Object],Market,[object Object],Available labor,[object Object],Facilities,[object Object],Forage availability… and quality,[object Object]
Lambs,[object Object],2.5 to 3 times birth weight.,[object Object],20 to 25 lbs. for artificially-reared.,[object Object],40 to 50 lbs. if raised on the dam.,[object Object],2 to 2.5 times birth weight.,[object Object],20 to 25 lbs. for meat and dairy kids.,[object Object],Better to wean by size than age ,[object Object],Kids,[object Object],Lamb or kid needs to be consuming enough dry feed to support maintenance and continued growth in the absence of milk in the diet.,[object Object]
PROS,[object Object],Early weaning14-90 days (usually 60-90 days),[object Object],Eases lactation stress of high producing females.,[object Object],Helps prolific females raise their offspring.,[object Object],Allows females to return to breeding condition sooner.,[object Object],There is less worm burden and predator risk when lambs and kids are weaned early and fed for market or breeding.,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
When is early weaning common?,[object Object],(Semi) intensive production system,[object Object],Early (winter) lambing,[object Object],Shed lambing,[object Object],Prolific females,[object Object],Creep feeding,[object Object],Finish lambs and kids on grain or grain + forage,[object Object],Artificially-reared lambs and kids.,[object Object],Sheep dairy,[object Object],Show animals,[object Object],Pasture is a limiting factor,[object Object]
Weaning artificially-reared lambs and kids,[object Object],6 to 8 weeks is optimal,[object Object],2 to 3 x birth weight,[object Object],Minimum 20 to 25 lbs.,[object Object],Need to be consuming enough dry feed to support maintenance and continued growth.,[object Object],Why not wean later?,[object Object],Cost of milk (replacer),[object Object],Labor,[object Object],Retard rumen development and consumption of dry feed.,[object Object],Wean abruptly,[object Object],Do not dilute milk or reduce feedings.,[object Object]
Creep feeding,[object Object],Providing supplemental nutrition to nursing lambs and kids.,[object Object],Need to set up creep area where lambs/kids can enter but ewes and does are excluded.,[object Object],Within 7 to 10 days of birth.,[object Object],In a high traffic area.,[object Object],Several openings.,[object Object],Good visibility,[object Object],Clean, dry, and well-bedded,[object Object],Some rules of thumb:2 in. (5 cm) feeder space per lamb/kid,[object Object],2 ft2 (0.19 m2) of creep pen per lamb/kid,[object Object]
Creep feed,[object Object],Small particles,[object Object],Easily digested,[object Object],Fresh,[object Object],Palatable,[object Object],High protein,[object Object],Always available,[object Object]
PROS,[object Object],Late weaning> 90 days,[object Object],[object Object],Less stressful to dams and offspring.,[object Object],Less risk of females developing mastitis.,[object Object],Takes advantage of available forage to finish lambs and kids.,[object Object],Pasture gains are often more economical than those achieved on grain.,[object Object],Can manage animals in one group.,[object Object]
CONS,[object Object],Late weaning> 90 days,[object Object],Lambs and kids must compete with ewes and does for pasture.,[object Object],Lambs and kids are more likely to become parasitized.,[object Object],Predator risk is higher.,[object Object],It may be necessary to castrate or separate males.,[object Object]
When is late weaning common?,[object Object],(Semi) extensive production system,[object Object],Late (spring) lambing,[object Object],Pasture lambing,[object Object],Less prolific ewes/does,[object Object],No creep feeding,[object Object],Finish lambs and kids on pasture.,[object Object],Abundant pasture,[object Object]
Creep grazing,[object Object],Creep feeding on pasture,[object Object],Creep feeding,[object Object],Image source: Otago Daily Times (NZ),[object Object],[object Object]
Get lambs and kids to market earlier.
Economics may vary by farm, species, and year.
Better nutrition (pasture or supplement) will improve parasite resilience.,[object Object]
Management before weaning,[object Object],CD-T Vaccinations,[object Object],Prevention of coccidiosis,[object Object],Reduce milk production in female ,[object Object]
VACCINATED DAMS,[object Object],Vaccinate lambs and kids with CD-T toxoid at approximately 6 and 10 weeks of age.,[object Object],Vaccinate lambs and kids with CD-T toxoid at approximately 4 and 8 weeks of age.,[object Object],Administer tetanus antitoxin at the time of docking, castrating, or disbudding.,[object Object],CD-T vaccinationsClostridium perfringins type C & D and tetanus,[object Object],UNVACCINATED DAMS,[object Object]
Coccidiostats*,[object Object],Bovatec® ,[object Object],30 g/ton of feed,[object Object],Rumensin®,[object Object],15 g/ton of feed,[object Object],Deccox®,[object Object],Add 2 lbs. of the 6% Deccox to 50 lbs. of loose trace-mineral salt.,[object Object],Put in drinking water for 21 days,[object Object],Mix 1.5 oz of 9.6% oral solution in 100 gallons of drinking water,[object Object],Drench lambs and kids for 21 days,[object Object],Mix 1.5 oz of 9.6% oral solution in 1 pint of water.,[object Object],Administer 1 oz per 100 lbs.,[object Object],Prevention of coccidiosis,[object Object],Amprolium (Corid),[object Object],Source: http://old.cvm.msu.edu/extension/Rook/ROOKpdf/coccidia.PDF,[object Object],*Rumensin® is extremely toxic to equines. Do not allow equines to consume any coccidiostats.,[object Object]
Drying off females,[object Object],Plan ahead of time,[object Object],Remove grain and protein from ration 1 to 2 weeks prior to weaning.,[object Object],Remove good hay from ration several days prior to weaning.,[object Object],Feed low quality hay or straw for several days after weaning.,[object Object],Restrict water intake shortly before and after weaning(?),[object Object],Watch ewes for engorged udders and signs of mastitis.,[object Object]
What do you do after weaning with the lambs and kids? Take them to market or keep them for further feeding or grazing,[object Object],There is no right answer!,[object Object],Depends on your market,[object Object],Depends on current and anticipated prices,[object Object],Depends on your availability of feed or forage.,[object Object],Depends upon your cost to put additional gain on lambs or kids.,[object Object]
What about the ewes and does?,[object Object],Sell them if they have a physical problem, are getting too old, or are a poor producer.,[object Object],If they are on the thin side, “fatten” them a bit before selling.,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
