Pyramids of biomass show the mass of the organisms at each stage of the
food chain.

The pyramid of biomass will always be a pyramid.
There will always be energy wastage between each stage in the
process.


                                 Where does the energy go?
Energy is lost to the environment in:



Respiration  energy for living eg movement

 Heat – keeping warm


Waste materials – faeces and urine
Decay – part of the cycle of life


Organisms take energy from the environment
They also give energy to the environment when they die

Microorganisms (eg bacteria and fungus) help the decay process. These
organisms are called decomposters.

Three things will help to speed up the decay process
Three conditions speed up the decay process:


 Warmth
 Moisture
 Oxygen
