2. These expressions are formed by combining verbs with prepositions and the result is a
compound verb, where its meaning is very different to that it shows dictionaries with each
individual verbs.
It is known that the same phrasal verb can have several meanings; Por ejemplo el verbo “give”
significa “dar”, pero si le agregamos el complemento “up”, tenemos “give up” que significa
rendirse, abandonar, dar pie atrás, etc.

Verbos Compuestos no separables
No se puede separar el verbo de su
partícula. La partícula debe seguir al
verbo.
•Mary looked after my dog while I was
away.
•I came across an old book of my
father’s in the attic.
•The teacher went overlast week’s topic.
•John called on Mary but she wasn’t
home.
Verbos Compuestos separables
Hay dos estructuras. Cuando el
complemento directo es un pronombre (it,
her, etc.), la partícula deberá ir después
del pronombre, no del verbo: A
terrorist blew it up (No diríamos: A
terrorist blew up it). Cuando el
complemento directo no es un pronombre,
podrá ir después del verbo o después de
la partícula.
•The building is on fire. A terrorist blew up
the building. A terrorist blew the building
up.
•Mary called off the wedding the day
before. Mary called the wedding off the
day before. There isn’t going to be a
wedding. Mary called it off.

4. These compounds need not directly add verbs, the verb and the particle always go together.
examples:
- Get up – (levantarse de la cama)
I always get up at six in the morning.
- Get away – (escapar)
The dog got away when we were bathing it.
- Break down – (dejar de funcionar)
Our car broke down in the middle of a traffic jam.
- Turn up – (aparecer/venir)
Tom turned up unexpectedly.

7.  The particles can give a clue to the meaning of the verb phrase as the particle
when adding the meaning changes

7. The teacher tells about the history (el maestro habla de la historia)

10. The teacher us waiting for the students (el profesor espera los alumnos)
