What Makes a Good Political
         Leader

                           Presenter
                       Samanga Amarasinghe
Introduction
   This survey was conducted between the dates
    11/11/2010 to 11/15/2010, the researcher to
    obtain information on political leadership.
   The survey was presented to 12 users within the
    peers and outsiders between the given time
    frames.
   The results of this survey will enable the
    understanding of what type of leadership style or
    qualities a political leader need to posses.
                                                      2
Summary
   Of the 12 people the survey was sent 10 has
    responded or 90% of responders.

   Overall result of the survey indicates that a
    political leader must possess a more
    transformational leadership style than a
    transactional.

   The results also indicates that a political
    leader should exercise balanced fox lion
    approach as advised by Machiavelli.

The style of the Survey
   The survey consist of 10 questions which
    address different aspects of leadership as Styles,
    leadership decision making, leadership attitude,
    and leadership ethics.
   The first 4 question is in multiple questions
    format with yes or no answers.
   The questions 5, 6 and 9 consist of choosing the
    best answers.

The style of the Survey and Analysis
method
 The questions 7 and 8 again follow the
 multiple choice questionnaire format
 where the user can give a yes or no
 answer.
 During the analysis of the received data
 in obtaining information such as totals
 and percentages of the given answer's the
 data was broken into two segments as
 questions .

   Of the broken segments 1st segment is
    questions 1-7 including questions 8 and
    10 as they are all multiple question style.

   The 2nd segment consist of questions 5, 6
    and 9 as they all have an answer
    consisting of the best possible choice.

Comparison of Good Political
Leaders
   Based on Question 5 a good observation was made
    on who does the majority considered to be of a
    great leader.




The observation indicate Martin Luther King Jr. To be of a great leader,
in comparison to the other selected leaders.

Machiavelli and Politics
     Machiavelli advise a leader to be cunning
      as a fox and bold and brave as a lion.




Based on this result gives a clear indication to how a politician should a balanced

   Based on Question 6, Being one of the most primary
    leadership styles transformational as observed by the
    responders to be used by a politician

Rule by fear or by love
   Adolf Hitler the chancellor of Germany between 1933-1945, led
    Germany with fear, also Alexander the great occupied nations
    through war, based on the response to question 6 on who is a
    great leader, led by love was more encouraged than lead by fear.

Conclusion
 The best form on leadership style
  observed is the Transformational
  Leadership style
 The best method for a politician to
  leader is being ethical and following
  servant leadership.
 Any one has the capability to be a
  political leader as long as they are
  leaders deep within.

Success of the Survey
   Despite the limitations the survey was a
    success in obtaining the desired
    information as to what type of style and
    methods should a political leader posses.

   The turnout of the survey in comparison
    to the responders the survey was sent to
    90% response was granted.

 Was able to obtain basic information
  with regards to the survey questions.
 The survey gave back answers which
  the researcher didn’t anticipate mainly
  when it came to the question of who is
  a good leader.

Problems of the Survey
 The participation was an even number
  hence, the information obtain was
  limited in variety.
 Ten question gives a limit to a keen
  observation on a subject as Political
  leadership which engulfs all aspect of
  leadership.
 Diversity was not used, such as obtaining
  the views based on Nationality, Gender,
  and Occupation.

   Due to the limitation of the participants
    and the Limitation in the amount of
    questions to be presented limited the
    ability to observe the survey question
    deeper

  • 20. Machiavelli and Politics  Machiavelli advise a leader to be cunning as a fox and bold and brave as a lion. Based on this result gives a clear indication to how a politician should a balanced As a fox and a lion. 20
  • 21. Transformational or Not  Based on Question 6, Being one of the most primary leadership styles transformational as observed by the responders to be used by a politician 21
  • 22. Rule by fear or by love  Adolf Hitler the chancellor of Germany between 1933-1945, led Germany with fear, also Alexander the great occupied nations through war, based on the response to question 6 on who is a great leader, led by love was more encouraged than lead by fear. 22
  • 23. Conclusion  The best form on leadership style observed is the Transformational Leadership style  The best method for a politician to leader is being ethical and following servant leadership.  Any one has the capability to be a political leader as long as they are leaders deep within. 23

Success of the Survey  Despite the limitations the survey was a success in obtaining the desired information as to what type of style and methods should a political leader posses.  The turnout of the survey in comparison to the responders the survey was sent to 90% response was granted. 24
  • 25. Success of the Survey Cont.  Was able to obtain basic information with regards to the survey questions.  The survey gave back answers which the researcher didn’t anticipate mainly when it came to the question of who is a good leader. 25

Problems of the Survey  The participation was an even number hence, the information obtain was limited in variety.  Ten question gives a limit to a keen observation on a subject as Political leadership which engulfs all aspect of leadership.  Diversity was not used, such as obtaining the views based on Nationality, Gender, and Occupation. 26
