VOICEMAIL DON’TS
TOP 10 PROSPECTING
Based on an inspiring

For cold callers, voicemails are
invaluable.There are ten things
you absolutely should not do…
#1: PLAYING “PRETEND”
There’s no need to pretend
you’ve called before if you
haven’t. For one, it’s a lie, and it
doesn’t mean all that much
anyway.

Instead, research enough so that
you’re able to start with a great
value proposition.
#2: OOPS…I DIDN’T MEANTO SAY 	

ALLTHAT
Keep it short and sweet.
!
When you start getting wordy, your
message gets convoluted and you won’t
portray a great point.
!
Don’t leave a rambling message.
#3:YOU’RE MISSINGTHE POINT
Leaving a voicemail that is
just a list of what your
product can do will be a nail
in the coffin.
!
Instead, make a compelling
challenge that will interest
your prospect and help them
remember you.
#4: NOT LEAVINGYOUR NAME 	

AND NUMBER
In absolutely every voicemail,
make sure and leave both
your name and number.
!
It’s easiest to leave your
information at the beginning
of every voicemail, so you
don’t look unreliable if you
call back.
#5: NO ONE LIKES A QUITTER
Don’t give up after a call
or two, keep reaching out
in new and creative ways. It
pays to be persistent.
!
Research shows that it often
takes nine attempted
connections until you finally
get a response from your
prospects.
#6: SHORT AND NOT SO SWEET
While short and sweet is
good, too short is bad. Make
sure and demonstrate value
and compel the prospect to
call you back, instead of
leaving abrupt and boring
voicemails.
#7:THE NEEDLE INTHE HAYSTACK
When you’re leaving a
voicemail, make sure that you
stick things that communicate
your message clearly.

You can’t spend your time
mentioning everything your
product can do or you’ll bore
the prospect before they even
hear the entire message.
#8: PLAYING HARDTO GET
Leaving one message and
waiting for a call back won’t get
you in touch with the people
that matter.
!
Instead, have a plan on how to
reach out to prospects over

#9: FORGETTING WHO SENTYOU
If you have a referral- use it.

You shouldn’t be afraid to ask
valued customers for referrals
and when you do have them,
make sure and use them to
make a cold call a lot warmer.

If you’re talking too fast, the
message sounds forced and
insincere.

Speak with confidence and lose
all the “umm’s.”

  • 4. #1: PLAYING “PRETEND” There’s no need to pretend you’ve called before if you haven’t. For one, it’s a lie, and it doesn’t mean all that much anyway. ! Instead, research enough so that you’re able to start with a great value proposition.
  • 5. #2: OOPS…I DIDN’T MEANTO SAY ALLTHAT Keep it short and sweet. ! When you start getting wordy, your message gets convoluted and you won’t portray a great point. ! Don’t leave a rambling message.
  • 6. #3:YOU’RE MISSINGTHE POINT Leaving a voicemail that is just a list of what your product can do will be a nail in the coffin. ! Instead, make a compelling challenge that will interest your prospect and help them remember you.
  • 7. #4: NOT LEAVINGYOUR NAME AND NUMBER In absolutely every voicemail, make sure and leave both your name and number. ! It’s easiest to leave your information at the beginning of every voicemail, so you don’t look unreliable if you call back.
  • 8. #5: NO ONE LIKES A QUITTER Don’t give up after a call or two, keep reaching out in new and creative ways. It pays to be persistent. ! Research shows that it often takes nine attempted connections until you finally get a response from your prospects.
  • 9. #6: SHORT AND NOT SO SWEET While short and sweet is good, too short is bad. Make sure and demonstrate value and compel the prospect to call you back, instead of leaving abrupt and boring voicemails.
  • 10. #7:THE NEEDLE INTHE HAYSTACK When you’re leaving a voicemail, make sure that you stick things that communicate your message clearly. ! You can’t spend your time mentioning everything your product can do or you’ll bore the prospect before they even hear the entire message.
  • 11. #8: PLAYING HARDTO GET Leaving one message and waiting for a call back won’t get you in touch with the people that matter. ! Instead, have a plan on how to reach out to prospects over time. WhatCounts’ 7x7 strategy is a great starting place.
  • 12. #9: FORGETTING WHO SENTYOU If you have a referral- use it. ! You shouldn’t be afraid to ask valued customers for referrals and when you do have them, make sure and use them to make a cold call a lot warmer. !
  • 13. #10:TALKING ON FAST-FORWARD If you’re talking too fast, the message sounds forced and insincere. ! Speak with confidence and lose all the “umm’s.”
