Per the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, Beach Cities overall well-being climbed 3 points since 2012. This is significant because the WBI is designed to be a very stable index. A 3 points jump in 2 years is considerable movement.Beach Cities was already pretty healthy, so upward movement is extremely exciting. This life far exceeded our expectations.During these first two years of the Blue Zones Project : The Beach Cities adopted bicycle master plans, livability policies and smoking restrictions.Thousands of residents pledged to complete at least one action to improve their well-being. Dozens of local restaurants are taking steps to promote a healthier experience for patrons.More than 150 local employers have committed to implement simple changes that increase employee well-being and create healthier work environments. More than 5,500 students have been reached by school based strategies and programs like Walking School Bus” programs that encourage increased physical activity and social connection through chaperoned walks to school… and MindUP along with changes to the cafeterias, menus, policies, etc.

The life evaluation aspect of well-being uses the Cantril “self-anchoring striving scale,” which is a measure first developed in 1965 by Hadley Cantril and his colleagues at Princeton University.Let’s look at one example question for the first dimension, life evaluation.“Please imagine a ladder…”Actually, it’s a little more complicated than this, as we ask the question both now and where you see yourself in six months.By normalizing across the population, scores for this dimension are segmented into thirds: thriving, struggling, and suffering.AND, based on data from your membership, it really does matter: see impact on medical costs.
