7. Magritte once said …
“To be a Surrealist … means barring from your mind
all remembrance of what you have seen and being
always on the look out for what has never been.”
9. Margritte’s Dream house
•Imagine if you woke up
and your room looked like
this?
•What everyday objects do
you see?
•What are all these things
doing together in the
picture?
•A comb is larger than a
bed? How can that be!
•Notice the sizes of these
things. What is strange
about them?
•Can you explain why the
sizes of things are so
mixed up?
•Look into the cabinet.
What do you notice?
•Walls are made of
clouds. How can you
explain this?
•Look closely. How can
you explain that the
furniture is inside the room
and not outside.
•What would you do with
all these things?
10. Make your own dream
roomthe room. Glue the magazine strip to
• Make
…
the bottom of your picture to show the floor.
Then draw a border around the sides and top.
Finally, make the “wall” of your picture into a
sky with clouds, birds, and sun if you like.
• Clip magazine pictures. Look for things you
find indoors such as furniture. Then look for
things you find outside such as trees, cars,
and grass. Then find everyday objects like
sneakers, cups, or food.
• Turn it inside out. Put things inside the room
that belong outside. Change the size of
things.
• Draw if you like too. With the magazine
cutouts maybe you can draw more furniture or
outside objects.
