Portfolio Importance of portfolio Types of portfolios Creating a portfolio
Importance of portfolio A portfolio is a collection of materials created by you, gathered together in one book designed to highlight your accomplishments and show off your talents.
Importance of portfolio Interviews Jobs Submission to grad school/college Freelancing
Importance of portfolio Show students my portfolio Why I decided to put certain things in mine, how I organized it, portfolio cards Things to include in yours: resume/cards/schoolwork/professional work/personal work/references/business cards
Importance of portfolio Traditional portfolios, which are collateral pieces or 4-by-5-inch transparencies mounted on black board. Pros: professional, easy to present and interactive Cons: no way to see work unless on interview, hard to contain and remember all pieces
Importance of portfolio Book formats, which are books with clear plastic pages for inserting materials, binders, and photo books. Pros: professional, industry standard Cons: no way to see work unless on interview, not easy to take pieces in an out of pages
Importance of portfolio Digital media including CDs and DVDs. Pros: contemporary, easy to send to people Cons: not good at view at interview. Cannot see work with different stocks
Importance of portfolio Digital portfolio posted on your Web site or hosted on a portfolio site. Pros: contemporary, easy to send people to, professional Cons: not good at view at interview. Cannot see work with different stocks
Importance of portfolio Online portfolios: www.thehiveadvertising.com www.ogilvy.com www.turnstylestudio.com www.martinagency.com www.graphicdesignblog.org
Creating portfolio Chronologically – most recent up top Good for seeing development over years Bad: see worst pieces first, must have something stunning first
Creating portfolio Category – grouping together items of various categories together (ex. Illustrations, photographs) Good for organization and easy to explain Bad: by group all together, not a lot of variety in sections
Creating portfolio Best piece first, second-best last, rest all between Good for variety Bad: hard to explain reasoning and time-period work is done. Must be well-rehearsed in delivery or seem disorganized
Appearance No matter the delivery type, must be clean, not dents, rips or tears Outer case – clean with no marks Inside material, clean, printed correctly, all supporting materials clean and organized
Recap Types of portfolio organizing, types of delivery, why they are good and bad
Recap of class Words of wisdom: keep in mind basic principals an elements. Always brainstorm and do thumbnails if possible before starting on a big project. Find out all specs ahead of time. Use the appropriate program from appropriate piece. Keep good track of your time. And always watch your type use! This is the hardest part of design, good font use.
