So I’ve been asked to give a talk about accessible technology in the home, so I thought I would start with WHY IS TECHNOLOGY IMPORATNT.As baby boomers and their parents get older they will want access to a wide array of technologies (although some may not even know it yet)
As baby boomers and their parents get older they will want access to a wide array of technologies (although some may not even know it yet)
Now I will mainly be talking about easy computer technology, but to begin, I will briefly review other accessible technologies that exist in the market today!
However, when I was designing an easy to use computer interface I also came up with these other important design considerations:In the end however, there is no substitute for testing with actual user and getting their feedback on what they want and what they find confusing or difficult.

Why is easy computer
We believe SoftShell is part of a larger trend of Seniors finally getting engaged with computers… For example this touchscreen PC was $2000 last year, but is $1400 today. In every industry, today’s cutting edge features becomes tomorrow’s standard requirements (for example, ABS breaks used to be luxury, now they are standard)SoftShell is at the foreront of this trend, and we are looking for a partner to capitalize on this emerging market.
As we age individuals can become afflicted by vision loss, hearing loss, and mobility as well as dexterity issues that

So given all these challenges and lots of testing with users this was the interface I came up with.Instead of all the features of Windows, PointerWare only has 4 primary features….This easy to use interface is currently being used by over 600 seniors across Canada and the US with great success….
The feedback that we have received from creating this special computer interface has been phenemonal because it has really helped a population that had never used computers before, Connect with their family,Give them a sense of empowerment with technology because they are able to use the computer on their ownRegular email correspondence with family has already helped to reduce social isolation in fragile populationsAnd many studies have shown the cognitive health benefits of game playBUT…don’t just take this from me. Let’s watch a video interview of our users.
Now to be able to use easy to use computer software like PointerWare you need to have a computer! The good news is that you can probably run software on your existing PC, BUT if you do need to be a new computer, their price has been dropping significantly over the past couple years.Easy to use technologies such as touchscreen computers have dropped from over $2000 last year to $1200 for this HP Touchsmart. Only last month, a new computer, the ASUS EEE Top also came out and this computer can be purchased for $700 CDN and it is a 15.6”…..
If you already have a computer and just want to buy a new computer screen.I recommend at least 19” to ensure a large viewing area. You can buy regular LCDs for…
If you want to try out the software yourself you can
Thanks for your time everyone! If you have any questions please feel free to ask them now or to come up and say hello to me and try the computer by the booth over there. Thanks everyone!
