RE: Shakespeare’s Othello
s you may know, our class has just
finished the unit on Renaissance
literature with a focus on
Shakespeare. We have completed Macbeth,
and next week, we plan to show another of
his plays, Othello. This version of the play
stars Laurence Fishburne and Kenneth
Branagh. Though written over 400 years
ago, this play (as most of Shakespeare’s
plays do) touches on themes and ideas that
we still struggle with today.
It is an excellent movie which does a wonderful job in picturing the precise elements which we
covered. However, it is rated “R” for some mature content and violence. If it is all right for
your student to see this in class, please sign and check the appropriate box below. If you do not
wish your student to see it, check that box. There will be no grade penalty for not seeing the
movie. I will simply assign separate work. Please note that if this form is not returned by
Friday, November 19th, I will assume you have not given your permission.
If you have questions about the movie, I encourage you to view it yourself or contact me. Thank
you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Richard Lane
