Project 06 introduced us to the redesign process by requiring us to redesign an adjustable wrench. We
had to identify the errors in a 2D drawing, rectify those errors, and model the newly designed parts. Also
we had to create assembly views of the wrench as well as rendered figures. The last part of this project
was the creation of animations, both rendered and non-rendered, to show how the parts fit together.

1 Introduction
Project 06 consists of the redesigning of a wrench that has already been drawn in 2D with dimensions.
The only problem is that the dimensions on the drawing are incorrect. Project 06 is an introduction to
the redesign process that we will encounter in the real world and in future projects.

2 Requirements
Project 06 consisted of two phases. Phase 1 has us identify the incorrect dimensions by first trying to
model the wrench in Pro Engineer. By doing this we will be able to see what dimensions need to be
changed. We tabulated these errors and then came up with ways to fix them. Also we had to create 2D
drawings highlighting the changes we made to each part.

Phase 2 consisted of the modeling of the newly designed parts of the wrench. Also we had to create an
assembly showing how the parts fit together. As in previous projects we had to create 2D drawings of
the new model with appropriate dimensions. Also we were required to create a rendered model
assigning various material appearances to the individual parts and create a video showing the
relationship of the parts with one another.

3.1 Phase 1
3.1.1 Part A: Problems with Design of Wrench
Component Problem
Handle 1.) The thread and the flat surface before the start of the thread should be
flush; however the dimensions given will not produce that.
2.) There are no dimensions for the triangular surface in the corner of the
                            handle.
Housing 1.) The length of the large cut out in the housing should not be 1 in.
2.) The dimension of 7/16th in on the front view is not possible
3.) The dimension of 7/16th in on the side view is not possible

Screw 1.) There are no problems with this part.
Pin 1.) There are no problems with this part.
Misc. 1.) There are no dimensions for the rounds throughout the drawing, even
                          though the drawing includes them.
2.) When describing the holes for the housing the term “NC” is used.
Table 1: explains design problems with wrench

For this part of Phase 1 we had to attempt to model the parts of the wrench in Pro Engineer. I say
“attempt” because some of the dimensions on the parts were incorrect and impossible if you wanted
the wrench to fit together and perform how it was intended. We had to use many of the modeling
techniques that were learned in previous projects such as, pattern, blend, and helical sweep.

                                                      3

Handle 1.) Changed dimension to .0833”
2.) Created a triangular extrusion and
                            added a chamfer

Housing 1.) Changed dimension to .9375”
                        2.) Changed dimension to .3825”
                        3.) Changed dimension to .3825”

Pin N/A N/A
Misc. 1.) Added round of appropriate sizes N/A
                            where necessary
                        2.) N/A
Table 2: explains solutions to faulty design (for larger images of the sketches see Appendix B)

For this section of Phase 1 we had to come up with ideas to fix the faulty dimensions of the wrench
parts. This just meant we had to change the values of the dimensions, not add new parts or change the

                                                               4
shape of existing parts. After we made the changes we needed to make sketches of the parts
highlighting the changes we made.

3.2 Phase 2
3.2.1 Part A

                             (a) (b)

                             (c) (d)

                             (e) (f)

                             (g) (h)
Figure 1: (a-h) redesigned parts of the wrench

Part A of Phase 2 consisted of modeling the redesigned parts of the wrench in Pro Engineer. To model
these parts we had to use all of the skills that we have learned in previous projects, such as helical
sweep, revolve cut, and blend. The blend in the handle (b), was by far the most difficult aspect of the
modeling. It took me a while to figure it out and I had to look at the “Toothpaste Tutorial” from an
earlier project. Also finding the dimensions of the threads was very tedious. Some of the dimensions in

                                                   5
the Machinery’s Handbook on UB Learns were unclear. All in all this part of Project 06 was not too
difficult.

3.2.2 Part B

Figure 2: 2D drawing of the wrench parts and assembled wrench

For Part B of Project 06 we had to create a 2D drawing of the parts of the wrench and the assembled
wrench. This was very easy, since we had done this in a previous project. The only problem I had was
with the assembled view of the wrench. I did not want it to be wireframe but I had no choice because
when I chose the no hidden option there was something wrong. When selecting the no hidden option,
for some reason it would cut off part off the housing from the picture; just showing blank space. At first I
thought it was because of how I exploded the assembly view, but I checked and that was not the issue.

                                                          6
3.2.3 Part C

                            (a) (b)

                                                       (c)
Figure 3: (a-c) various views of the wrench assembly

For this section of Part C we had to create an assembly model showing how the parts interacted with
each other. This section was simple due to the fact that we had done this in earlier projects.

                            (a) (b)
Figure 4: various views of the exploded assembly

The last task for Part C was to create an exploded view of the assembly of the wrench. This was also very
simple. All you had to do was access the edit position dialogue in the explode tab and move the parts
where you wanted them.

                                                       7
3.2.4 Part D

Figure 5: rendered image of the wrench

For Part D we had to create a rendered image of the wrench with the parts being various materials. The
handle needed to be cast iron, the housing needed to be brushed iron, and the screw and pin could be a
metal of our choosing. This was quite simple to accomplish since a whole project was already dedicated
to creating rendered images of models. Also we had to establish an appropriate setting and lighting in
the image.

3.2.5 Part E

                            (a) (b)
Figure 6 (a) print screen of the video with non-rendered wrench (b) print screen of the video with the rendered wrench

For Part E we had to create two animations of the wrench, one rendered and one without rendering.
These animations had to be similar to that of the phone animations that we had done previously. These
animations showed how the parts went together and showed all possible angles of the wrench. The
creation of the videos was very easy, because once again this was covered in a previous project. The
only issue I had was the same issue I had before. The rendering of the video takes forever. Luckily I had
some work that I was able to while waiting for the completion of the rendering.

4 Discussion
Project 06 was a very good test of our abilities in Pro Engineer. It utilized most, if not all, of the skills that
were learned in the previous projects. We had to model several parts and create an assembly as well

                                                             8
videos showing how the parts went together. For the most part this project went very smoothly. The
only things that gave me a hard time was the looking up of the dimensions for the various thread types,
and the creation of the blend on the handle. Some of the dimensions for the threads were confusing but
after closer inspection and some patience they became clear. At first I tried to model the blend from
memory; however that failed me and I could not get the blend to look as it should. I then looked at the
tutorial we used in a previous project and everything clicked.

5 Conclusion
The goals of Project 06 were to test our abilities in Pro Engineer and introduce us to the redesign
process. I believe I met these goals. I now understand, for the most part, what it takes to redesign a
product. Also I believe that I have completed this project accurately and to the best of my ability.

Ryan Bierl Mae377 Project06

  • 1. UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO Project 06 Adjustable Wrench Redesign Ryan R. Bierl 10/23/2009 Project 06 introduced us to the redesign process by requiring us to redesign an adjustable wrench. We had to identify the errors in a 2D drawing, rectify those errors, and model the newly designed parts. Also we had to create assembly views of the wrench as well as rendered figures. The last part of this project was the creation of animations, both rendered and non-rendered, to show how the parts fit together.

  • 3. 1 Introduction Project 06 consists of the redesigning of a wrench that has already been drawn in 2D with dimensions. The only problem is that the dimensions on the drawing are incorrect. Project 06 is an introduction to the redesign process that we will encounter in the real world and in future projects. 2 Requirements Project 06 consisted of two phases. Phase 1 has us identify the incorrect dimensions by first trying to model the wrench in Pro Engineer. By doing this we will be able to see what dimensions need to be changed. We tabulated these errors and then came up with ways to fix them. Also we had to create 2D drawings highlighting the changes we made to each part. Phase 2 consisted of the modeling of the newly designed parts of the wrench. Also we had to create an assembly showing how the parts fit together. As in previous projects we had to create 2D drawings of the new model with appropriate dimensions. Also we were required to create a rendered model assigning various material appearances to the individual parts and create a video showing the relationship of the parts with one another. 3 Results 3.1 Phase 1 3.1.1 Part A: Problems with Design of Wrench Component Problem Handle 1.) The thread and the flat surface before the start of the thread should be flush; however the dimensions given will not produce that. 2.) There are no dimensions for the triangular surface in the corner of the handle. Housing 1.) The length of the large cut out in the housing should not be 1 in. 2.) The dimension of 7/16th in on the front view is not possible 3.) The dimension of 7/16th in on the side view is not possible Screw 1.) There are no problems with this part. Pin 1.) There are no problems with this part. Misc. 1.) There are no dimensions for the rounds throughout the drawing, even though the drawing includes them. 2.) When describing the holes for the housing the term “NC” is used. Table 1: explains design problems with wrench For this part of Phase 1 we had to attempt to model the parts of the wrench in Pro Engineer. I say “attempt” because some of the dimensions on the parts were incorrect and impossible if you wanted the wrench to fit together and perform how it was intended. We had to use many of the modeling techniques that were learned in previous projects such as, pattern, blend, and helical sweep. 3
  • 4. 3.1.2 Part B: Solutions for Wrench Design Component Solution Sketches Handle 1.) Changed dimension to .0833” 2.) Created a triangular extrusion and added a chamfer Housing 1.) Changed dimension to .9375” 2.) Changed dimension to .3825” 3.) Changed dimension to .3825” Screw N/A N/A Pin N/A N/A Misc. 1.) Added round of appropriate sizes N/A where necessary 2.) N/A Table 2: explains solutions to faulty design (for larger images of the sketches see Appendix B) For this section of Phase 1 we had to come up with ideas to fix the faulty dimensions of the wrench parts. This just meant we had to change the values of the dimensions, not add new parts or change the 4

After we made the changes we needed to make sketches of the parts highlighting the changes we made. 3.2 Phase 2 3.2.1 Part A (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) Figure 1: (a-h) redesigned parts of the wrench Part A of Phase 2 consisted of modeling the redesigned parts of the wrench in Pro Engineer. To model these parts we had to use all of the skills that we have learned in previous projects, such as helical sweep, revolve cut, and blend. The blend in the handle (b), was by far the most difficult aspect of the modeling. It took me a while to figure it out and I had to look at the “Toothpaste Tutorial” from an earlier project. Also finding the dimensions of the threads was very tedious. Some of the dimensions in 5
  • 6. the Machinery’s Handbook on UB Learns were unclear. All in all this part of Project 06 was not too difficult. 3.2.2 Part B Figure 2: 2D drawing of the wrench parts and assembled wrench For Part B of Project 06 we had to create a 2D drawing of the parts of the wrench and the assembled wrench. This was very easy, since we had done this in a previous project. The only problem I had was with the assembled view of the wrench. I did not want it to be wireframe but I had no choice because when I chose the no hidden option there was something wrong. When selecting the no hidden option, for some reason it would cut off part off the housing from the picture; just showing blank space. At first I thought it was because of how I exploded the assembly view, but I checked and that was not the issue. 6
  • 7. 3.2.3 Part C (a) (b) (c) Figure 3: (a-c) various views of the wrench assembly For this section of Part C we had to create an assembly model showing how the parts interacted with each other. This section was simple due to the fact that we had done this in earlier projects. (a) (b) Figure 4: various views of the exploded assembly The last task for Part C was to create an exploded view of the assembly of the wrench. This was also very simple. All you had to do was access the edit position dialogue in the explode tab and move the parts where you wanted them. 7
  • 8. 3.2.4 Part D Figure 5: rendered image of the wrench For Part D we had to create a rendered image of the wrench with the parts being various materials. The handle needed to be cast iron, the housing needed to be brushed iron, and the screw and pin could be a metal of our choosing. This was quite simple to accomplish since a whole project was already dedicated to creating rendered images of models. Also we had to establish an appropriate setting and lighting in the image. 3.2.5 Part E (a) (b) Figure 6 (a) print screen of the video with non-rendered wrench (b) print screen of the video with the rendered wrench For Part E we had to create two animations of the wrench, one rendered and one without rendering. These animations had to be similar to that of the phone animations that we had done previously. These animations showed how the parts went together and showed all possible angles of the wrench. The creation of the videos was very easy, because once again this was covered in a previous project. The only issue I had was the same issue I had before. The rendering of the video takes forever. Luckily I had some work that I was able to while waiting for the completion of the rendering. 4 Discussion Project 06 was a very good test of our abilities in Pro Engineer. It utilized most, if not all, of the skills that were learned in the previous projects. We had to model several parts and create an assembly as well 8
  • 9. videos showing how the parts went together. For the most part this project went very smoothly. The only things that gave me a hard time was the looking up of the dimensions for the various thread types, and the creation of the blend on the handle. Some of the dimensions for the threads were confusing but after closer inspection and some patience they became clear. At first I tried to model the blend from memory; however that failed me and I could not get the blend to look as it should. I then looked at the tutorial we used in a previous project and everything clicked. 5 Conclusion The goals of Project 06 were to test our abilities in Pro Engineer and introduce us to the redesign process. I believe I met these goals. I now understand, for the most part, what it takes to redesign a product. Also I believe that I have completed this project accurately and to the best of my ability. 6 References The following were used to complete Project 06 Machinery’s Handbook on UB Learns “Toothpaste Tutorial” on UB Learns “Helical Sweep Thread” (PDF) on UB Learns 9
