During the past decade an essential progress in South-East Europe has been observed. However it still faces many challenges related to the resource effciency, high energy intensity, energy independence and security, CO2 emissions. These issues are influenced by the choice of technologies, policy, consumption and production models. The 11th South-East European Forum and Exhibitions on Energy Effciency, Renewables and Smart Cities will be held from 11 to 13 March 2015, in Sofia, Bulgaria. Taking the key role of the sustainable development into account, the event will facilitate the technology and knowledge transfer to the Region, as well as the dialogue between all value chain players. The Exhibition is an interaction hub for new product exposure and establishing company alliances to generate joint business projects. Funding mechanisms and good examples will be among the highlights in the Conference program in which keynote speakers from European institutions and organizations will take part.

IGNITE your....European Funding Opportunities Presenter – Alan Scrase, centre manager of SETsquared at the University of Southampton, will present about “The new SME instrument” Horizon 2020 provides easy access to € 2.8 Billion to SMEs to fill the gaps in funding for early-stage, Research and Innovation SMEs and accelerating the exploitation of innovations. The new SME instrument will be a simpler and more easily accessible funding scheme for SMEs, where projects will be selected through a bottom-up approach within a given societal challenge or enabling technology of H2020.

Alessandro Carano is Adviser to the deputy Director General of the European Commission Directorate for Economic and Financial Affairs. He works on the Investment Plan for the Europe and the European Fund for Strategic Investment. He was previously Managerial adviser and Head of Unit at European Investment Bank, responsible for the institutional relationship with EU Institutions and other IFIs on policies and activities outside the EU. He led the negotiations on the new EIB External Lending Mandate for the period 2014-2020, allowing up to EUR 30bn in EIB financing in support of EU external action. He contributed to the establishment of the Western Balkans Investment Framework and other blending mechanisms. He worked on the Mid Term review of EIB external mandate including support to the steering committee of wise persons chaired by M. Camdessus, and subsequent codecision procedure. He has also worked in the Projects directorate of the EIB. Previously he worked for Procter & Gamble. He holds an MBA from Vlerick management school and engineering MSc degree from Turin Politechnic University.
