Incumbent telecommunication and broadband Internet service
providers are facing competitive threats from cable and
satellite television operators.
Evolving customer preferences and the emergence of new
technologies in the communications sector mean that:
 Consumers now want a wider range of TV, video and video-based
services from their service providers.
 Telecommunication and broadband Internet service providers are
losing customers and market share to communications service providers
who provide IPTV and triple play (voice, video and data) services.
 Service providers are required to leverage the latest technologies to
offer increased user self-programming options, portable content and
time-based scheduling.
11 © 2009 IBM Corporation
As a result of market changes, telecommunications and broadband
Internet service providers face several critical needs and challenges.
Many organizations are experiencing:
 Reduced market competitiveness due to increasing customer turnover.
 Shrinking revenues due to the lack of new revenue generation streams.
 Lack of resources and skills required to plan and implement a
reliable IPTV network infrastructure.
As a result, they need to:
 Implement a fully integrated IPTV and video-based network for
enhanced customer satisfaction and loyalty.
 Deploy a wider range of customer services to increase revenue
generation and expand market share.
 Engage industry-recognized experts to develop a flexible and scalable
IPTV network infrastructure with the ability to support future services.

  1. Integrated communications services on ibm.com http://www-935.ibm.com/services/in/index.wss/itservice/gts/z1000412?source=cppITservices
  2. IBM will help you implement an IPTV network infrastructure solution that can: Enable increased customer loyalty and satisfaction— through the delivery of new and enhanced IPTV and video-based customer services. Facilitate enhanced market competitiveness and increased revenue generation— by providing open, flexible IPTV network architectures. Deploy a solution that meets your business needs— by leverage IBM testing experience and IPTV expertise.
  3. Telecommunication and broadband Internet service providers are currently facing the competitive threat of cable operators, satellite operators and alternative broadband providers, resulting in high customer churn and reduced revenue. Moreover, the increasingly young and tech-savvy generation of consumers and the rise of new technologies mean that service providers are expected to provide the latest and best customer services possible--or risk losing subscribers to competitors. This includes services like self-programming options (as opposed to central-programming options), portable content and time-based schedules (instead of platform-based schedules).
  4. With a highly competitive market and evolving customer preferences, telecommunication or broadband Internet service providers need to support an expanding portfolio of innovative services to retain—and attract—customers. Without the ability to offer TV, video-on-demand and other video-based services, you face potential high customer turnover rates and declining revenues as your subscriber base compares your services to those offered by growing numbers of alternative service providers. You need a flexible and robust IPTV and triple play infrastructure so you can deliver new and exciting services that can increase customer satisfaction and enable you to compete in today’s highly competitive landscape.
  5. Internet Protocol television—or IPTV—is a system capable of receiving and displaying a video stream encoded as a series of Internet Protocol packets. There are multiple ways of doing this, one of which is traditional television channels, from which consumers demand a smooth, high-resolution, lag-free picture. Core IPTV services consist of advertising services, core TV services and subscriber user interface (SUI) services. Core TV services comprise two categories: Unicast – Consumer personal video recorder, network personal video recorder, subscription video-on-demand and video-on-demand Multicast – Near video-on-demand, time-shifted TV, pay per view, subscription TV Subscriber user interface services are composed of interactive electronic program guide (EPG), advanced search, favorite channels list, program rating and blocking, personalized view, asset management and content metadata, account status and billing, personalized program packages and support for iTV applications. iTV: Internet Television
  6. Consumer acceptance of new products and content from the IPTV platform can lead to subscribers adopting a wider range of premium and on demand options as carriers begin to offer them. TV-related services—including video on demand, subscription TV, pay-per-view and personalization services—can generate more than US$100 a month of incremental revenue per subscriber. More importantly, by adding video to your service portfolio, you can prevent subscribers from migrating to competing providers that can offer triple-play services.
  7. To enable us to offer you a wide range of network infrastructure architecture options, IBM has strategic relationships with industry-leading technology vendors. Cisco- or Optibase-based IPTV video headend - Designs and deploys video headend for service provider IPTV infrastructure. Highly reliable service provider grade video headend infrastructure.
