PSYCHOLOGY
Medical Psychology: An Old & Emerging Specialty
The goals of this lecture are to acquaint practitioners
and students with methods and issues relevant to the
application of psychology to medical psychology which
includes health-related intervention, the way people
are affected psychologically by illness and disease,
various behaviours and cognitions affecting health and
illness. A look at the history of Medical Psychology as it
was in the past and as it is in the age of Behavioural
Neurosciences will be used to frame this presentation.
Objectives 1. To understand the disease in a biopsy-
chosocial model, 2. To become familiar with the modern
approach of some frequent psychosomatic diseases
(e.g. cardiovascular, pulmonary, allergic). 3. To understand
the role of clinical and health psychologists in daily
clinical practice; 4. To be able to identify the contribution
of psychosocial factors in pathology and the possibility
to address them, via psychotherapy or counselling. 5.
To become familiar with the concept and theories of
stress, to instruments designed to+ evaluate stress and
to modalities of intervention, centred upon behavioural
and coping style changes. 6. To be able to identify
various psychological disorders and key personality
traits related to health / disease.
Magic of the Mind: Helping the Body Heal
The goals of this lecture are to acquaint practitioners
and students with the interplay between mind and body,
the implications in psychosomatic illness, use of various
techniques (positive thought, affirmations, guided imagery,
other) to promote wellness, examine the role of psycho-
neuroendocrinology and psychoneuroimmunology in
treatment of medical conditions, and look at methods of
working as a team with other health professionals in
providing the best, integrated care possible.
Objectives 1. To review the neurophysiological and
neurochemical dynamics in developing a positive
attitude and wellness focus, 2. To look at the research
which has been done on use the mind to make way for
health to occur, 3. To examine the power of belief in
attracting health, 4. To review and test out techniques
for activating our own chemistry and physiology.
