This document discusses two photos posted to Flickr. The first photo shows a group of students and researchers standing outside a building at the University of Georgia. The second photo is of bookshelves at the Library of Congress containing old volumes.
Self-directed, guided exploration of the material leads students to find personal meaning and to connect with the information with which they are interacting as - with the help of technology - part of the exploration involves discovering new ways to interact.
despite an abundance of choices, most educators return to the same implement over and over; a method shown overall to be less effective and less engaging than many others: Direct Lecture.
While there are certainly valid reasons that educators may choose to lecture for a lesson, many find themselves falling into a trap of using direct lecture as the default (and sometimes the only) method that they use
Some are very valid reasons
Direct lecture methods excel at delivering concrete information quickly, but fail at helping students understand and use abstract concepts.
As a result, externally driven education tends to develop students who want to know what will be on the test, rather than what will help the patient.
While there is a current trend in education to use technology to create well-designed motion-graphic multimedia presentations, what many educators fail to recognize is that they are still effectively using the same teaching method first developed in medieval universities.
In emergency services education such instructor-centric direct-delivery teaching methods don’t allow students to analyze, assimilate and apply knowledge in ways that foster practical problem solving and real-world skills performance.
Lecture-based methods do not help students learn or practice essential soft skills such as interpersonal communication, team-dynamics, and critical thinking.3
Where students are presented with challenges (questions or problems) and learn the course material in the context of addressing the challenges. Inductive methods include case studies, problem-based learning, project-based learning, discovery learning, and just-in-time teaching.
Environment is key.

some educators find the role of guide and facilitator far more challenging that the role of “sole arbiter of knowledge”
Athletes and gymnasts are often “spotted” when performing their skills. They receive support and guidance, not just told what to do, then evaluated on whether they can do it or not. Successful EMTs, like successful athletes, learn and practice simultaneously with guidance until they can perform independently, sometimes even surpassing their instructors.
If you have a computer lab like this or sim-lab, GREAT, but not required.
I want to put no-cost to low cost tools for student centered ed. In the hands of educators who teach in classrooms like this one.

Allows assignment of collaborative projects. Allows note-sharing. Allows asynchronous coaching & monitoring.
Assign some portion of the skill that you wish students to perform, and then have them record one perfect performance and upload it to a private YouTube channel. Students get to practice until they do it right, maximizing performance and minimizing embarrassment, then they receive peer feedback guided by educators, either on-line or in-class.

Students will be able to see perspectives that they didn’t have when involved in the simulation.
It's important for students to understand that they will not always be able to look up answers on the Internet, nor will the answers that they find always be the correct ones.
In this way the students stay more engaged, practice peer-teaching (a highly effective education technique), and develop important critical thinking skills about information they look up on the internet.
This is a perfect opportunity to educate staff in the proper use of social media.
How engaged would you be in a class where the teacher wasn’t even speaking your language?
We’ve already gone over some ideas.
So many mind maps just Google it.
The educational term for this is “Scaffolding”, meaning that students must build their fundamental knowledge, skills and abilities before they can use them to solve more complex problems.

The key to the student-centered education concept of "flipping the classroom" is to get “lecture-style” education resources in the hands of students before they sit down the classroom, then class time can be spent engaged in practice assignments and activities.

Many options are now available for low-cost or open soft learning management system software.
learning management system can not only tell students what they got right and what they got wrong, it can also direct them to additional resources to explain why and what they can do to improve performance.

While not every one of these ideas will work for every educator in every situation, these free to low-cost solutions will certainly allow educators to field test ideas that will help focus the education on the student.
This is about developing the practical skills that providers need in the real world like dynamic problem solving, communication, team-building, critical thinking, and self-direction. This is not about investing in technology; this is about investing in students and the care they will provide to our communities.

Isn't adding a technology component to class just asking for one more thing to fail? Well, in a strict sense, of course adding anything to your class could be viewed as one more thing to go wrong, but that is why I’ve focused on simple classroom technology. Any good educator will have checked the function of their equipment before they begin and have a backup plan since the show must go on. That’s why we’ve focused not just teaching tech, but focusing on using them as a tool for the purpose of enhancing the education, not the focus of the education itself. I am concerned about the use of social media in classrooms as a vehicle for potential HIPPA violations. How can I ensure that my students don't use technology in class to violate confidentiality? That’s a great question and certainly a valid concern. Luckily, the answer is that the same education that we give to teach students good behavior for patient confidentiality is the same education that will guide their use of technology both in and out of the classroom. Won't even effective use of technology in the classroom just make students who are book-smart? Great point. That’s exactly why the focus needs to be on the student-centered and performance-based aspect of our education. We need critical thinkers with good skills practice and using the tools and techniques we’ve discussed today, your student’s will be just that. This will help make them ready for the street.
