District Governor's Official Club Visit to Rotary Midtown
Hearty welcome to District Governor Rtn.S.Gururaj & Ann.Pushpa Gururaj
It seems like yesterday that we heard a great news, another Mysorean taking
the mantle of leadership in RI District 3180. There have been many stalwarts
taking up the coveted post and it was now the turn of the soft, mild, friendly,
popular Rotarian Gururaj to take up the prestigious post. Those who attended
the recently held conference could see the first couple of the district moving
around the venue as though it was a family wedding and they were to take care
of the entire program, their personal touch to the proceedings was really
notable. Anxious moments were ably managed and one could see the true grit
and capacity of Rtn.Gururaj. In his speech RI representative Rtn.Arun
showered praises on the governor and his entire team for putting up such a
spectacular show. Ann.Pushpa exceeded one's expectation and was evidently busy during the 3
day conference, she even rendered a beautiful poem in her crisp address during the closing
session. Rtn.Gururaj has close connections in Midtown, but still it is our pleasure to introduce and
welcome the friendly governor.
Rtn.Gururaj S is a active member of Rotary Club of
Mysore for more than 24 years. In his active life as a
Rotarian he has donned various responsibilities not just in
the club but also at the District Level. He led the club
during 2000-2001, being a President of the club he was
instrumental in dedicating many meaningful permanent
projects to the community, the club eventually won the
“Best Club” for that year. He became the Assistant
Governor during 2003-2004, took office as District
Secretary during 2005-2005, led the Group Study
Exchange team to New Zealand, RI Dist.9901 during
2008-2009. Recognizing his contributions RI has
Governor couple with RI President couple
awarded him with the prestigious 4 Avenues Citation. He
has been a very popular face in Mysore and entire district and promises to create new chapters in
service endeavours by leading Rotary District 3180 during 2013-14.
Being from a family of teachers, he too began his career
stint as a teacher but soon realised his entrepreneurship
skills and got into agriculture and poultry. His notable
contribution to the poultry feed is establishing co-operatives
and a newspaper dedicated to the poultry farmers, a first of
its kind initiative in the country. He is also the founder of
Chaitra High School & P.U college in Mysore.
Rtn.Gururaj is married to Ann.Pushpalatha, she is also a
member of Inner Wheel and also served as a president of the
IW club. The couple is blessed with one daughter & one
son. Darling daughter Mrs.Charulatha who now resides with
her husband Mr.Aditya while continuing her higher
education in the U.S. Only son Mr.Shishir is pursuing degree
in Engineering. Rtn.Gururaj is a Major Donor and all the four
members of the family are PHFs (Paul Harris Fellows).

65 Republic day celebrations at RMA
26th January- RMA School children were all decked up
to observe 65th Republic Day. In spite of it being Sunday and
losing one holiday the spirits among the children were
pretty high. Sharp 9am the proceedings started with the
welcoming of the Chief Guest, our own Past President and
Asst. Governor, Rtn. Dr. M. N. Bheemesh. After the flag
hoisting and a patriotic dance for A R. Rehman's song at
the open ground the gathering was shifted to the
assembly hall. After the formal invocation, welcome by president Rtn.Bhanu, and a brief introduction of
the Chief guest Bheemanna and a brilliant patriotic speech by one of the students, marathon prize
distribution ceremony started. It is amazing that nearly 25% of
the school population have won prizes. The events included
science exhibition, PPT presentation, Gold from waste etc. even
to primary school children, which goes to indicate the efforts,
the management and the teachers have put in to bring in
innovativeness. School children were managing the stage show
and they really looked very structured and organized – culture
inculcated from Midtown Rotarians.
Chief Guest Rtn.Bheemesh, in his speech was interactive and narrated the inspiring story of
Wilma Rudolph an American athlete, who contracted infantile paralysis (caused by the polio
virus) at age four and scarlet fever and with sheer determination went on to become an Olympic
champion with orthopedic braces on her legs. He then briefly explained to the young minds the
significance of Republic day and gave away books of “making of constitution” to one of the
students who answered the Quiz and to the
school library. On the spot cash prizes sponsored
by Alagappan sir were given to the girl who gave
the patriotic speech, and the group which
rendered the patriotic song.
A good 2hr programme concluded by vote of
thanks from the Principal Mrs. Vanitha Bhat who
as usual recognized every single effort for the success of the programme. Children lined up for the
sweet distribution and dispersed to enjoy the remaining Sunday.

4. Practical Innovation
Rotary Information
Researchers have
found a way to reduce
heart swelling after a
heart attack by using
i n j e c t a b l e
nanoparticles, which
could help increase the
patient's chance of
survival.
The process, developed by researchers at
Northwestern University and the University of
Sydney in Australia, involves injecting negatively
charged nanoparticles made of a biocompatible
and biodegradable polymer into the bloodstream
within 24 hours after the heart attack has occurred.
The particles attract the positively-charged
monocytes—inflammatory cells that hurry to the
oxygen-starved tissue—and redirect them to the
spleen instead.

Rotary member Terry Caster and his wife,
Barbara, announced a $1.1 million gift to
Rotary to help eradicate polio. What's more,
their gift will be matched two-for-one by the
Bill Melinda Gates Foundation, resulting in
$3.3 million in new funding for the Global
Polio Eradication Initiative.
The Casters' gift is one of the largest-ever
individual contributions to Rotary for polio
eradication. In addition to supporting our No.
1 goal of a polio-free world, the couple gave
$750,000 to the Rotary Peace Centers to fund
a peace fellow's studies every other year.
Both gifts were made to The Rotary
Foundation in December.
