While virtualization technologies like Xen have been around for a long time, it is only in recent years that they have started to be targeted as viable systems for implementing middlebox processing (e.g., firewalls, NATs). But can they provide this functionality while yielding the high performance expected from hardware-based middlebox offerings? In this talk Joao Martins will introduce ClickOS, a tiny, MiniOS-based virtual machine tailored for network processing. In addition to the vm itself, Joao Martins will describe performance improvements done to the entire Xen I/O pipe. Finally, Joao Martins will discuss an evaluation showing that ClickOS can be instantiated in 30 msecs, can process traffic at 10Gb/s for almost all packet sizes, introduces delay of 40 microseconds and can run middleboxes at rates of 5 Mp/s.

Fan-in Flames: Scaling Kafka to Millions of Producers With Ryanne Dolan | Current 2022 At supermassive scale, a perennial problem with Kafka is ""high fan-in"" -- a large number of producers sending records to a small number of brokers. Even a relatively modest amount of data can overwhelm a broker when there are hundreds of thousands of concurrent producer requests. This talk discusses a few real-world applications where high fan-in becomes a problem, and presents a few strategies for dealing with it. These include: fronting Kafka with an ingestion layer; separating brokers into read-only and write-only subsets; implementing specialized partitioning strategies; and scaling across clusters with ""smart clients"".

Network functions virtualization (NFV) has the potential to transform the way operators offer services. While it brings with it flexibility to enable operators to offer customizable services that can deliver great value to the end user - or as a leading carrier describes it, a "user-defined network" - it can also complicate network operations. Some of the concerns over sync and NFV are already being addressed in the data center world. Take, for example, in large financial trading houses where synchronization is tightly coupled into the software architecture to provide microsecond-level time-stamping to trades. This presentation examines the new options for synchronization as it relates to NFV - and what it will take to enable accurate synchronization over a virtual network.

The core team of the Open Source CMS Neos has been working on a new content repository for the last 8 years. What took us long? The new CR is event-sourced, with sophisticated projections and a thoroughly designed PHP API, something which has not been done before, not even outside the PHP ecosystem. This content repository allows you to work with content similar to managing Code with Git – branches, versioning, and multi-language with fallbacks included. There's a big range of applications for the Neos CR and since it is available as a standalone component, you can use it in any Composer-based project. We'll guide you through the concepts, architecture, and API of the Neos CR, enough for you to start with your own experiments.

There are many reasons to use Docker for development, but if you don't have a PHP image which is tailored to dev and production, your daily work can become a big hassle. In this session we'll go through what it takes to create a flexible Docker image providing PHP which fits both, development and production environments. We'll look at various aspects, like the operating system, PHP extensions, configuration, debugging, speed, security and the image size.

Kubernetes is also called the "distributed Linux of the cloud" – which implies that it provides fundamental infrastructure, which can solve a lot of challenges. Let’s see how PHP applications fit into this picture. In this presentation, we are going to explore when Kubernetes is a good fit for operating your PHP application and how it can be done in practice. We’ll look at the whole lifecycle: how to build your application, create or choose the right Docker images, deploy and scale, and how to deal with performance and monitoring. At the end you will have a good understanding about all the different stages and building blocks for running a PHP application with Kubernetes in production.

Infrastructure and applications running in Kubernetes clusters are based on a plethora of "resources". You can manually create and maintain deployments, pods, services and ingress resources, but may soon loose track of your configuration. Fortunately, there’s an alternative way to manage your Kubernetes cluster – the GitOps way. GitOps is a way of managing your cluster so that the whole system is described declaratively and version controlled. An automated process makes sure that the resources in the cluster match the desired state defined your Git repository. Flux (https://fluxcd.io) is an Open Source solution which automates this task. Given that you have some basic idea about Kubernetes (or don’t mind shrugging at a few nitty-gritty details during the talk), I’ll show you, how you can control applications and infrastructure in Kubernetes using Flux and Helm.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
