Projectile Motion
    Chapter 3-3
Projectile Motion
• Objects that are thrown or launched into
the air and are subject to gravity are
  called projectiles
• Path of a projectile is called a parabola
  – With air resistance, the path is not a
    parabola
  – Text keeps the horizontal velocity of a
projectile constant (doesn’t account for air
    resistance)
Vertical Motion of a Projectile
• Put equations on page 100 onto formula
  sheet
• Used to calculate the vertical component
of final velocity and the vertical
  displacement
  – Can use 3rd equation to solve for time (see
    page 101)
Horizontal Motion of a Projectile
• Put equations on page 100 onto formula
  sheet
  – The horizontal component of velocity is
    constant
  – The horizontal displacement can be
    calculated by multiplying the horizontal
velocity by the time the object is in the air
Sample Problem 3D
1. Write given information and make a diagram
2. Analyze equations and develop a plan
3. Calculate
4. Check your work
Classwork/Homework
• Do Practice 3D Problems 1-4
Projectiles launched at an angle
• Sine and cosine can be used to find
  the horizontal and vertical
  components of the initial velocity
• Add formulas from page 102 to
  formula sheet
Practice Problems
• Pg. 103 - Sample Problem 3E
• Homework
  –Pg. 104, Practice Problems 3E, #1-5
