13. Sims Media Center Description The media center is located on the first hallway to the right after entering Sims Elementary. The media center is the first door on the right. There is only a single door opening of 34 ” . This satisfies the ADA policy requirements for doorway size of 32 ” for a single doorway. Nothing of real interest invites people inside. The entrance could use some sprucing up.
14. Sims Media Center Description These exits are convenient to the parking lot and make the facility a good place for activities and events held outside of regular school hours. There are two outside entrances to the media center. These entrances satisfy ADA requirements of access to parking.
15.
16. Sims Media Center Description The media center is a room about 60 ’ x 70 ’ feet with windows all across the top of the exterior wall. The approximately 4200 square feet of space exceeds Georgia DOE facilities policy for square footage per student. A FTE of 515 requires only 2850 square feet. At Sims full capacity it still meets the 2950 square foot requirement.
17. Sims Media Center Description View from inside media center of doors to offices. There are two other interior doors that connect the media center to two small rooms. These rooms are connected by a moveable wall. The rooms are currently being used as office space and are no longer used as part of the media center. They are located just inside the main entrance to Sims Elementary. This was valuable media center space and should be part of the media center again.
18. Sims Media Center Description There is an office for the media specialist inside the media center. This office connects to a small kitchen. It also connects to the media clerk’s office which houses the computer system server, the video playback equipment and video collection.
20. Photo Tour of Media Center Entering the media center you see a bulletin board on the left and a display of teacher materials on the right.
21. Photo Tour of Media Center As you pass the bulletin board you come to the circulation desk and the standing station of three computers and a printer.
22. Photo Tour of Media Center View of circulation desk and standing computer station from center of media center.
23. Photo Tour of Media Center This view shows the standing computer station and the area used to store some of the teacher’s materials. Carts and overhead projectors are parked in this area also.
24. Photo Tour of Media Center This view shows the back wall holding some of the teacher’s materials. The half wall is used to hide the overhead projectors on carts. Put does not do an adequate job of hiding the clutter.
25. Photo Tour of Media Center This is a view of the teacher materials and overhead projectors. A lot of the materials are stored in plastic bags. Not a pretty site! Closed storage is needed here.
26. Photo Tour of Media Center From the area where the overhead projectors are parked you can see the sitting computer station with eight computers. You also can see to the far end and one of the exterior doors.
27. Photo Tour of Media Center The first photo shows a cart blocking the doors to the adjoining offices that were once a part of the media center and used for storage. The second photo is another view of the doors from the opposite side of the computer station.
28. Photo Tour of Media Center This is a view of the reference section as you move around the corner from the computer station. Though the room is bright, the décor is dated by country accents.
29. Photo Tour of Media Center This is the corner where the reference and biography sections meet. The walls are light tan and the carpet is blue. A few modern, blue, plastic chairs are paired with tables with dark laminate tops and metal legs.
30. Photo Tour of Media Center As you continue along the wall, you come to some non-fiction. The shelves are neat with plenty of room. However, the displayed artwork is by students from 1988. Time for an update.
31. Photo Tour of Media Center Next is everyone’s favorite cozy reading area with a sofa and loveseat. The students love to sit here. The furniture seats five, and it has seen better days.
32. Photo Tour of Media Center This picture shows additional views of the sofa area which also includes a television and dvd player on a stand. It is located near the first exterior entrance. Lots of light comes in through the glass door and the tall windows beside it. At times it could be too much light for television viewing. New blinds would help.
33. Photo Tour of Media Center This bookcase holds professional materials on one side and oversized picture books on the other. Both of these should be moved to other spots. A globe, lamp and CD player sit on top. It serves as a low divider for the sofa reading area and the main library area.
34. Photo Tour of Media Center This shows the opposite side of the divider and the tall bookshelves holding the collection in alcoves along the exterior wall. There are wood and laminate tables and chairs for older students. Not the most comfortable seating. The space is open and has plenty of natural light but there are a lot of hard surfaces.
35. Photo Tour of Media Center A moveable magazine rack sits in front of a column as the bookcases continue along the exterior wall. A wall hung rack would free up floor space. The low bookcase houses the easy books.
36. Photo Tour of Media Center The picture on the left shows the last alcove in the background and the easy books in the low bookcase in front. There is a wide open aisle between them. The second picture shows the end of the room with tall windows and an exterior door.
37. Photo Tour of Media Center A park bench next to the exterior door. Not the most comfortable seating choice.
38. Photo Tour of Media Center This picture shows the end of the exterior wall and the beginning of the magazine and fiction section. The low bookcase holds the easy books and forms a u-shaped story and teaching area for younger students.
39. Photo Tour of Media Center These pictures show the magazine and fiction sections as the tall bookcases continue around the perimeter of the room. The outdated country décor continues.
40. Photo Tour of Media Center The fiction section continues along the wall back towards the circulation desk. This is a view of the fiction section from the exterior entrance of the media center.
41. Photo Tour of Media Center This picture shows the media specialist’s chair. The upholstery is dated. The students sit on the floor to hear a story or lesson. Not very comfortable for the students.
42. Photo Tour of Media Center This is the view from the story teller’s chair across the media center to the biography section. There are wooden tables and chairs in the foreground for the younger students. Though utilitarian, not very comfortable.
43. Photo Tour of Media Center These pictures taken from the story area show the openness of the media center.
44. Photo Tour of Media Center This brings us back to the circulation desk. This picture was taken from the biography section looking towards the fiction section.

71. Needed Media Center Policies All school media centers with a base FTE of 450 should be required by the state to have double doors at all exterior entrances/exits. Sims media center has single doors at both exterior entrances/exits. In case of a fire or other need to exit swiftly the single doors could impede a safe and swift exit. http://www.fotosearch.com/sc/UNW352/u23168122/
