RIPE NCC Activities
         • Coordination of Internet Operations
         • Distribution and registration of Internet number
Resources: IPv4, IPv6 and AS numbers
         • Measurements and statistical analysis
         • We operate the K-root name servers
         • Organise RIPE Meetings twice a year
         • Provide a platform for the industry to exchange
              experiences and knowledge

The RIPE Community
         • The RIPE Community acts as the policy making
body in the RIPE NCC service region
         • RIPE has a chair, but is not a formal body
         • Community is open to everyone
         • Discussion via mailing lists and at the meetings
         • Decisions are made by consensus
         • All that is required to join, is a working email
address to subscribe to the mailing list

Conclusions - What We Learned
         • IPv6/dual-stack works just fine, but make sure
              that
                – It is properly tested and monitored (like IPv4)
                – Your network can reach all others (like IPv4)
         • Dual-stack = Two chances for best performance
         • Days like this “work”
                – Raise awareness
                – Give people a target to work towards
                – We’re ready for a next IPv6 day/week/month/year

  • 1. IPv4 depletion and IPv6 adoption in the RIPE NCC service region Nathalie Trenaman Trainer Friday, November 4, 2011
  • 2. RIPE and RIPE NCC Friday, November 4, 2011
  • 3. About RIPE NCC • One of the five Regional Internet Registries (RIR) • RIPE NCC service region covers Europe, the Middle East and parts of central Asia • Not-for-profit association, based in Amsterdam • Funded from the membership fee • 7.800 members throughout the region • Neutral, impartial, open and transparent Nathalie Trenaman, 7 November 2011 3 Friday, November 4, 2011
  • 4. The Five RIRs Nathalie Trenaman, 7 November 2011 4 Friday, November 4, 2011
  • 5. RIPE NCC Activities • Coordination of Internet Operations • Distribution and registration of Internet number Resources: IPv4, IPv6 and AS numbers • Measurements and statistical analysis • We operate the K-root name servers • Organise RIPE Meetings twice a year • Provide a platform for the industry to exchange experiences and knowledge Nathalie Trenaman, 7 November 2011 5 Friday, November 4, 2011
  • 6. The RIPE Community • The RIPE Community acts as the policy making body in the RIPE NCC service region • RIPE has a chair, but is not a formal body • Community is open to everyone • Discussion via mailing lists and at the meetings • Decisions are made by consensus • All that is required to join, is a working email address to subscribe to the mailing list Nathalie Trenaman, 7 November 2011 6 Friday, November 4, 2011

  • 12. Transfer of IPv4 Allocations • Policy 2007-08: Allocation Transfer Policy – Don’t buy your IPv4 on eBay! – Transfer unused allocations to another LIR – Minimum allocation size /21 – Evaluated by RIPE NCC – Update in RIPE Database http://www.ripe.net/lir-services/resource-management/listing Nathalie Trenaman, 7 November 2011 12 Friday, November 4, 2011
  • 13. RIPE NCC’s last /8 • We do things differently! • Ensures IPv4 access for all members – 16000+ /22s in a /8 – members can get one /22 (=1024 addresses) – must already hold IPv6 – must qualify for allocation • /16 set aside for unforeseen situations – if unused, will be distributed • No PI Nathalie Trenaman, 7 November 2011 13 Friday, November 4, 2011
  • 15. IPv6 Ripeness • Rating system: – One star if the LIR has an IPv6 allocation – Additional stars if: - IPv6 Prefix is announced on router - A route6 object is in the RIPE Database - Reverse DNS is set up –A list of all 4 star LIRs: http://ripeness.ripe.net/ Nathalie Trenaman, 7 November 2011 15 Friday, November 4, 2011

  • 20. Conclusions - What We Learned • IPv6/dual-stack works just fine, but make sure that – It is properly tested and monitored (like IPv4) – Your network can reach all others (like IPv4) • Dual-stack = Two chances for best performance • Days like this “work” – Raise awareness – Give people a target to work towards – We’re ready for a next IPv6 day/week/month/year Nathalie Trenaman, 7 November 2011 20 Friday, November 4, 2011
