Kevin Kluge, VP Engineering at Cloud.com, led this session at the RightScale User Conference 2010 in Santa Clara.
Session Abstract: Hybrid clouds offer the best of both worlds – the complete control of a private cloud coupled with the ability to handle elastic workloads by bursting into public clouds like Amazon EC2. In this talk, we describe how to build a hybrid cloud using Cloud.com plus RightScale. This hybrid cloud solution consists of an on-premise private cloud implemented using Cloud.com CloudStack and workload bursting to Amazon EC2 implemented using RightScale.

3. What is a Hybrid Cloud? 3 Two or more clouds Some servers on a private cloud Some servers on a public cloud Optionally used for bursting Single management interface Spans both public and private clouds Enables consistent view of servers across clouds
4. Hybrid Cloud Prequisites 4 No need to move large datasets to burst Simple websites, content systems OR Large pipe between public and private So big data location doesn’t matter WAN optimization
5. Who is Cloud.com? 5 IaaS software provider Orchestration layer Open Source Enables secure, multi-tenant, scalable public and private clouds GA software since 2009 CloudStack product is RightScale ready
6. A RightScale / Cloud.com Solution 6 Private cloud running CloudStack Physical resource management through CloudStack Highly Scalable Server (Guest) management through RightScale Public cloud Any RightScale-managed cloud is sufficient EC2 in this example RightScale manages images, server arrays, and autoscaling across clouds Provides single management interface
7. A RightScale / Cloud.com Solution CloudStack Management Server Bursting Any RightScale-managed Public Cloud Hypervisor Hypervisor Hypervisor Cloud.com Private Cloud
8. Demonstration Deployment 8 Private Cloud on CloudStack Virtual load balancer (HAProxy) Two HTTP-based app servers Public Cloud on EC2 Autoscaling array of app servers Load generating client Result: as load changes on application servers the public cloud array grows/shrinks in size
10. Demonstration Implementation 10 Public cloud array of app servers Cloudburst tag Min of 0, max of 10 Same function as private cloud app servers Application Servers Register with load balancer on create Regardless of server location Vote on array sizing based on CPU utilization Find array with “cloudburst” tag Grow at >60% busy, shrink at <30% busy Unregister from load balancer on destroy
12. Future Direction 12 Deploying a private cloud is challenging Deployment architecture, fault tolerance Network configuration Storage selection Hypervisor selection Scalability plan Security review Therefore hybrid clouds are challenging A SaaS solution can help!
13.
14. The Cloud Kit 14 Optional public cloud of your choice Fewer choices easier deployment Prescriptive about technology choices No administrator UI? Still scalable Simplicity helps scale
15. The Cloud Kit Architecture CloudStack Management Server SaaS Offering Public Cloud Hypervisor Hypervisor Hypervisor Cloud Kit On Your Premises 15
16. Summary 16 Hybrid clouds are here today RightScale + Cloud.com Consistent experience across EC2 and private cloud Bursting across cloud boundaries Private and hybrid clouds can be easy SaaS can help CloudStack + Service 2011 Thanks!
