What Are Recorded Mini-
Lectures?
• Portions of traditional classroom
lectures
• Guides to use before readings
• Supplements to materials/readings
• Reinforcement of key concepts, themes

Why Not Use “Lecture
Capture”?
• Students more likely to watch shorter
videos
• Don’t need to see “talking head”
• Usable on computers, mobile devices
• Easy editing, formatting, captioning

What’s the Point?
• Lectures for completely online students
• Outside-class lectures for flipped
classes
• Reinforcement of readings, lectures
• Anytime/any device access

What We’re Doing at UW-Stout
• Chunking traditional lectures
• Making MP4 recordings
• Posting recordings to streaming server
• Giving instructors links to put in D2L

What We’re Using
• Camtasia Add-In for PowerPoint
(recording)
• Camtasia Studio (editing)
• Notepad (URL and redirect coding)
• Madison Streaming Server (posting)
• D2L (links and viewing)

Caveats
• Keep them short!
• Plan ahead, start early
• Caption lectures
• Minimize use of webcam
– Instead, make a class/course intro video
– Or, add a picture of yourself on a lecture
slide
• Collect student feedback

Why I Use Camtasia
• Presenting content online
• Address limitations with lectures
• More student questions/activities
• Less easy material
• Integration of auditory and visual
stimuli
• Appeal to varied learning styles
• Incorporation of rich multimedia content

My Experience with Camtasia
• Prepare PowerPoint
• Write script (verbalized)
• Record
• Insert subtitles
• Edit for size, errors, effects, etc.
• Write quiz/worksheet/other incentive

Reflections
• Give yourself time!
• Script quality matters
• Captioning is very important
• Don’t worry about mistakes!
• Freedom of F2F time

Future Foci
• Need more structure in F2F
• Quizzing or worksheets?
• In class or outside?
• Through Camtasia or CMS?
• More videos on working problems or
reviewing content
• More videos on processes/programs

at my apartment and therefore had to watch the videos at friends houses or on
campus.”
