Comparing      vs. ,[object Object],  the process of comparing.   (books we’ve read, movies   we’ve seen) ,[object Object],y=2x + 3 compared to            students need to be taught Y=2x – 3 on a graphabout and practice.
Recommendations for Classroom Practice Give students a model                     Use familiar content Give Students Graphic Organizers     Guide students as needed
Give students a model ,[object Object],Select the items you want to compare. Select the characteristics of the items you are basing your comparison. Explain how the items are similar and different based on characteristics. ,[object Object],What do I want to compare? What things about them do I want to compare? How are they the same? How are they different?
Use familiar content Everyday comparisons can help students understand the steps in the process. Understanding and following steps in a process for comparing helps students when they use the process with content knowledge!

Guide students as needed At first, you might identify the items and their characteristics to compare. After some practice, you might identify the items to compare and ask students to choose the characteristics they will base their comparison on.

Identify Sample Source What classroom is this from? What were students asked to do?
Expectations for Looking at work Read each question carefully Look for evidence of student learning Make notes on each student’s performance Identify Common Patterns Take 5 minutes to look at the samples.
Share Out Around the horn! What is the evidence of student learning? What did you notice? Specific Student Examples? What common trends did you notice?
Action Items Use this strategy in your classroom during the next two weeks.  Submit one class set of student work by Feb. 28th You do not need to grade the work sample.
