- The traditional industry model for consolidation is to co-locate previously dispersed storage volumes into one large storage system. This does improve utilization and reduce management costs, but with some significant limitations. Volumes are still very much bounded by RAID groups and moving unused storage around requires some effort. FlexVol, a standard feature of Data ONTAP, tears down the boundaries and allows volumes to be carved out of a single pool of storage with the excess capacity shared between all volumes. FlexVol makes it easier to expand or reduce the size of volumes and typically increases utilization by 20-30% because you don’t need as much spare capacity.
- NetApp Is the Leader in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Midrange and High-End NAS Solutions March 2011 Gartner has released its Magic Quadrant for Midrange and High-End NAS Solutions . NetA pp is listed as the LEADER, ahead of all the vendors mentioned in the quadrant in both ability to execute and completeness of vision. Gartner says of leaders: "Vendors in the Leaders quadrant have the highest scores for their ability to execute and completeness of vision. - NOTE TO PRESENTERS: Use this slide to demonstrate NetApp momentum in virtualized environments, and as further evidence that customers are choosing the best-of-breed storage solutions above single source vendor solutions. Here’s a look at the momentum NetApp is seeing in virtualized environments. We have been working with virtualization leaders for years, bringing innovations to market to optimize efficiency and flexibility in those environments.
- Goal of Slide: Share NetApp storage efficiency advantages IT efficiency is not simply technology and is not based on a particular feature. IT efficiency is a way of thinking, For example: How to get more out of low-cost components like SATA drives by using Flash Cache to drive acceleration on top of SATA drives. How to pack more and more bricks into the same physical containers for techniques like data deduplication, compression, etc. How to reduce the number of copies by creating snapshots and as many virtual copy instances as we can. Storage efficiency is an ongoing agenda for NetApp. We’ll continue to provide enhancements in this area, increasing both the scale in which storage efficiency applies as well as the number of use cases. Operational Efficiency: But probably an even more important element of optimization is reducing the number of people required to manage a given size of infrastructure: reducing the number of full-time administrators it takes to manage more and more terabytes. This is where service automation becomes really critical. How do we make sure that we can do end to end, one button provisioning in a completely lights-out data center? Increasingly, more and more of our customers are beginning to ask for that. When you are building data centers that require storage of 10, 20, 30, 50 petabyte in a single data center, you cannot succeed by simply adding more and more manpower to handle provisioning and the management of these environments. Service automation becomes a requirement. Our goal is to provide application integration that reduces the separation between an application administrator’s job and a storage administrator’s job and includes automating data protection as an integrated element of the data management. Very rapidly we’re going to get to a point where there are many tasks that no longer need to rely on an administrator. These are all really driving toward increasing the number of terabytes that can be managed by a single FTE. Some of these can be done with technology changes, but many of these require process changes as well. How can you change the test and development processes in order to take advantage of virtual cloning capabilities to accelerate QA? That’s a process change, and IT organizations have to be committed to making those types of process changes in order to continue to drive efficiency in the datacenter. If you don’t make those changes, there is going to be a cost gap between what a service provider can offer and what the internal IT organizations can offer. Increasingly, benchmarks will be developed that drive economic decisions about the best way to deploy and manage applications.

This results in a high level of complexity, and often results in poor utilization with stranded silos of capacity and performance that cannot be shared or reallocated You may be spending more than you need to on like-to-like environments for test and dev, archival, DR, D2D backup. With NetApp you can get like-to-unlike environments (protocols and mixed FC and SATA disks) The industry approach means a lot of different processes, different staff, different hardware and software to learn and stay current on. With NetApp’s unified approach, you can simplify your environment; a single hardware & software platform with common management, upgrades, training, people, diagnostics, provisioning The reduction in complexity you get from NetApp can also reduce human error, the leading causes of downtime Suggested script: The unified approach means that you can use the same hardware, software, people, and processes for all your storage and data management requirements, regardless of tier, protocol or task. The advantages include higher people productivity, fewer errors, faster response and lower costs. A good analogy is Southwest Airlines, who have chosen to standardize on the 737, an approach that has helped them become one of the most profitable airlines in the States. Their pilots, mechanics, air flight attendants and other personnel learn one airplane, one set of processes, and they can work on any plane in the fleet. When Southwest Airlines was looking for a storage and data management partner, they selected NetApp because of the similarities in our approach. Southwest has broadly standardized on our solutions throughout their operations. If we aren’t running, Southwest can’t fly. Transition: We have the broadest portfolio of modular systems available from any vendor.
- Script for this slide: NetApp efficiencies include both software and hardware approaches that set them apart from the competition. Here I’ve listed just a few of the software capabilities that are core capabilities available across the entire product line. These are proven technologies, shipping for years, and in many cases, they’re innovations from NetApp that competitors are still trying to emulate. They can be used singly or together; the more you turn on, the greater the savings. I already touched on a couple of these technologies - thin provisioning, deduplication - but they are only two examples of the arsenal of efficiency technologies you can put to work in your environment. I'll just mention a couple of others here. Thin replication dramatically reduces the space required for disk-based backups and disaster recovery. After an initial copy, subsequent transfers move only the changes. This enables virtual restores of full, point-in-time data at granular levels that other vendors cannot provide, and it does so using only a sliver of the capacity and network bandwidth other backup & recovery and DR solutions need. Savings in the neighborhood of 80% are not uncommon. Now you can affordably protect more of your data more frequently. FlexClones are writable virtual copies of any size of production datasets used for application development, test, QA, staging, decision support, and training. They can very quickly be created using near-zero incremental storage capacity; only subsequent changes begin to consume capacity. We have customers, like Oracle and Activision, using dozens of FlexClones to accelerate their test and development processes using very little incremental storage capacity. Dual-parity RAID provides protection in the event of not a single drive failing, but actually two drives failing. This technology makes SATA drives highly reliable so you can deploy them more broadly than you otherwise might consider. We can also accelerate I/O performance, using an economical performance accelerator card, making these cheap, very dense drives suitable for a broader range of applications. We’re seeing customers embrace the use of the ATA drives for many more of their applications. In addition to providing 2x density at about a quarter of the cost, these disks drive down associated operational costs, like power, cooling and data center floor space. Thomson Reuters and Oracle are two examples of companies that are using SATA drives for half their capacity needs. Transition to next slide: We have already talked about deduplication, but it’s worth touching on in more detail.
