HA websites are where the rubber meets the road - at 200km/h. Traditional separation of dev and ops just doesn't cut it. Everything is related to everything. Code relies on performant and resilient infrastructure, but highly performant infrastructure will only get a poorly written application so far. Worse still, root cause analysis in HA sites will more often than not identify problems that don't clearly belong to either devs or ops. The two options are collaborate or die. This talk will introduce 3 core principles for improving collaboration between operations and development teams: consistency, repeatability, and visibility. These principles will be investigated with real world case studies and associated technologies audience members can start using now. In particular, there will be a focus on: - fast provisioning of test environments with configuration management - reliable and repeatable automated deployments - application and infrastructure visibility with statistics collection, logging, and visualisation

If you have already worked on various Kafka Streams applications before, then you have probably found yourself in the situation of rewriting the same piece of code again and again. Whether it's to manage processing failures or bad records, to use interactive queries, to organize your code, to deploy or to monitor your Kafka Streams app, build some in-house libraries to standardize common patterns across your projects seems to be unavoidable. And, if you're new to Kafka Streams you might be interested to know what are those patterns to use for your next streaming project. In this talk, I propose to introduce you to Azkarra, an open-source lightweight Java framework that was designed to provide most of that stuffs off-the-shelf by leveraging the best-of-breed ideas and proven practices from the Apache Kafka community.

Get up and running quickly with Apache Kafka http://kafka.apache.org/ * Fast * A single Kafka broker can handle hundreds of megabytes of reads and writes per second from thousands of clients. * Scalable * Kafka is designed to allow a single cluster to serve as the central data backbone for a large organization. It can be elastically and transparently expanded without downtime. Data streams are partitioned and spread over a cluster of machines to allow data streams larger than the capability of any single machine and to allow clusters of co-ordinated consumers * Durable * Messages are persisted on disk and replicated within the cluster to prevent data loss. Each broker can handle terabytes of messages without performance impact. * Distributed by Design * Kafka has a modern cluster-centric design that offers strong durability and fault-tolerance guarantees.

Spark Streaming has supported Kafka since it's inception, but a lot has changed since those times, both in Spark and Kafka sides, to make this integration more fault-tolerant and reliable.Apache Kafka 0.10 (actually since 0.9) introduced the new Consumer API, built on top of a new group coordination protocol provided by Kafka itself. So a new Spark Streaming integration comes to the playground, with a similar design to the 0.8 Direct DStream approach. However, there are notable differences in usage, and many exciting new features. In this talk, we will cover what are the main differences between this new integration and the previous one (for Kafka 0.8), and why Direct DStreams have replaced Receivers for good. We will also see how to achieve different semantics (at least one, at most one, exactly once) with code examples. Finally, we will briefly introduce the usage of this integration in Billy Mobile to ingest and process the continuous stream of events from our AdNetwork.

Speaker: Aaron Morton, Apache Cassandra Committer & Co-Founder/Principle Consultant at The Last Pickle Inc. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efI5fL8eEfo&list=PLqcm6qE9lgKLoYaakl3YwIWP4hmGsHm5e&index=23 From the microsecond your request hits an Apache Cassandra node there are many code paths, threads and machines involved in storing or fetching your data. This talk will step through the common operations and highlight the code responsible. Apache Cassandra solves many interesting problems to provide a scalable, distributed, fault tolerant database. Cluster wide operations track node membership, direct requests and implement consistency guarantees. At the node level, the Log Structured storage engine provides high performance reads and writes. All of this is implemented in a Java code base that has greatly matured over the past few years. This talk will step through read and write requests, automatic processes and manual maintenance tasks. I'll discuss the general approach to solving the problem and drill down to the code responsible for implementation. Existing Cassandra users, those wanting to contribute to the project and people interested in Dynamo based systems will all benefit from this tour of the code base.

One of the biggest challenges in data science is to build a continuous data application which delivers results rapidly and reliably. Spark Streaming offers a powerful solution for real-time data processing. However, the challenge remains in how to connect them with various continuous and real-time data sources, guaranteeing the responsiveness and reliability of data applications. In this talk, Nan and Arijit will summarize their experiences learned from serving the real-time Spark-based data analytic solutions on Azure HDInsight. Their solution seamlessly integrates Spark and Azure EventHubs which is a hyper-scale telemetry ingestion service enabling users to ingress massive amounts of telemetry into the cloud and read the data from multiple applications using publish-subscribe semantics. They’ll will cover three topics: bridging the gap of data communication model in Spark and data source, accommodating Spark to rate control and message addressing of data source, and the co-design of fault tolerance Mechanisms. This talk will share the insights on how to build continuous data applications with Spark and boost more availabilities of connectors for Spark and different real-time data sources.

OSGi goes beyond service invocations in a single JVM with the introduction of RFC 119 - Distributed OSGi. It will enable an OSGi bundle deployed in a JVM to invoke a service (either OSGi or non-OSGi) in another JVM or process, potentially on a remote computer accessed via a network protocol. Meanwhile, an OSGi service deployed in another JVM or a non-OSGi program such as Web Service client, potentially on a remote computer, to find and access a service running in the "local" OSGi JVM (i.e. an OSGi deployment can accept service invocations from remote OSGi bundle or external environments). The distributed computing functionality is added to the OSGi programming model without additional APIs or concepts as the distribution layer will be mostly transparent to OSGi developers by configuration. SCA (Service Component Architecture) provides a technology-neutral approach to abstract business logic into components and assemble them into composite applications. It greatly simplifies the component communications using declarative bindings. QoS requirements can be uniformly declared as SCA intents which can be mapped and realized using different stacks. SCA is a great fit to be a distribution provider for distributed OSGi. Apache Tuscany is an open source project that implements the SCA specifications. It provides integrations of implementation types (such as Java, Scripting, BPEL, Spring, OSGi and JEE) and binding types (such as Web Service, JMS, EJB, CORBA, RMI, JSONRPC, and ATOM) as the infrastructure for SCA programming. The latest version of Tuscany runtime is fully built on top of OSGi as the foundation. We recently added the OSGi RFC 119 support. In this session, we will teach you how to develop a distributed OSGi application to leverage the SCA capabilities using Apache Tuscany. A calculator scenario will be used to demonstrate the distributed OSGi service invocations using RMI and Web Service protocols. We will also explain how to model an OSGi bundle as an SCA component and configure the SCA composite to provide communications between services. The readers will understand the basic ideas behind distributed OSGi in the concrete example and the power of Tuscany SCA for service composition.

With more memory available, system performance of three Dell devices increased, which can translate to a better user experience Conclusion When your system has plenty of RAM to meet your needs, you can efficiently access the applications and data you need to finish projects and to-do lists without sacrificing time and focus. Our test results show that with more memory available, three Dell PCs delivered better performance and took less time to complete the Procyon Office Productivity benchmark. These advantages translate to users being able to complete workflows more quickly and multitask more easily. Whether you need the mobility of the Latitude 5440, the creative capabilities of the Precision 3470, or the high performance of the OptiPlex Tower Plus 7010, configuring your system with more RAM can help keep processes running smoothly, enabling you to do more without compromising performance.
