Ryan's Playbook Explores Ways to Welcome Others
1. Hi. I’m Ryan
and this is my
Playbook.

2. This is a place for me to
explore my thoughts related
to SERVE
to myself
to...
life.
Maybe you’ll take something
away, too.
But maybe not. We’ll see.
I’m curious to see where
this
takes
us..

3. This is the topic of the
first week - “Welcome.”

5. What makes me feel welcome.. How do I welcome others...
When people appear genuinely 1) I’m intentional - I’m not a
interested in me very talkative person in general,
in my well being but I make myself come out of
in who I am as a person. my shell when it comes to
When I feel a part of something welcoming others.
BIGGER 2) I’m a real person. I don’t
When I have something to bring associate with others through
to the a title (I’m Ryan, who happens
to bethe RA; I’m not the RA,
who happens to be named Ryan).
3) I try to be present;
for the most part I’m
around (How are other
people going to want to
be present, if even YOU
don’t want to???).
Sometimes I need
to find my own
space though..

7. So that was a real recipe for “Slutty Brownies,” not
“Welcoming.” I’m already breaking rules, and we’re not even
through week one yet.
NOM NOM
I picked that recipe because..
A) They’re delicious. Seriously, try some. Better yet, make
some and invite me over and we’ll have some together
(hopefully you don’t like them so I get more).
B) Alex, one of my residents, brought these from home one
time and I fell in love with them. She knew how much I liked
them, and next time she went home, she made more and
brought them back.
Did she make them the second time because I liked them? I
have no idea. Probably not. Buuuuuuuut, it still made me feel
good (and not just my belly).
When I think about the times that I’ve felt welcome, it’s
because people remember things about me. They follow up on
some of the things that have been happening in my life.

8. So I guess that’s the biggest part of my recipe..
Remembering.. caring.. following up..
Tell me something important about you,
and watch it happen..

9. I think I’m getting a little bit ahead of myself..
Probably a lot of what I just talked about
falls under the category of “Connect,” instead
of “Welcome...”
I’m reminded that “Welcome” is..
But that’s fine if this Playbook
is a bit messy..

11. It looks like the places where I feel I belong are:
A) Where I feel “Home”
B) Where/with people I’ve invested myself in
(ending a sentence with a preposition, ugh)
C) Where other people have invested in me.
Get it.. home.. investment..
I know, I know, I’m funny.
I’ll be here for six weeks, don’t worry.
.. but this is it for week one!
