4 Shared Token Ring has been and continues to be chosen for its superior fault tolerance and manageabilty. These are valued benefits. Token Ring is the technology of choice for industries where availability of the network is mission critical to the business (Banking, Retail, Financial services, insurance etc.). Server bandwidth and Interswitch congestion are emerging as real concerns for large Token Ring users. Server backup is an obvious application that will need more speed and bandwidth into the server. As server disks mushroom in size to cope with user demand for space, the time taken to backup extends to point where it is unacceptable. Users are already upgrading tape backup equipment to improve speeds, but at some point soon, it will be the 16Mbps network speed rather than the tape that sets the limit. Some large network users find 16Mbps interswitch links are becoming significantly loaded and itstarting to become an urgent issue
