- 2. What are Ascomycetes? Ascomycetes are organisms from the phylum Ascomycota Commonly referred to as “sac fungi” because they sexually reproduce with spore-filled structures called asci (sing. ascus) - means ‘sac’ or ‘bag’ in Greek . Ascomycetes are useful, but some species can be harmful. You can find ascomycetes in your mouth, in some cheeses, or underground on tree roots. There is no single definite place.

- 4. Structure ofan Ascomycete Most species grow as fine, microscopic structures called hyphae. Many inter-connected hyphae form a mycelium known as thallus. Hyphae have perforated cross walls, whose divisions are called septa (sing. septum). A small, common hole in the center of the septa allows the nuclei to move from cell to cell. The asci are often kept in an ascocarp or an ascoma. Ascocarps come in a variety of shapes, colours, and textures. They can be either alone or clustered. Ascomycetes produce both sexually and asexually.
