1. 9 shot analysis
Taylor Swift – Safe and Sound
By Rebecca Clarke
2. This extreme wide shot of the tree sets the scene in a
misty field. The colours are associated with an indie
genre and also makes the video seem cold. This shot
is shown before the music starts so it builds up the
atmosphere and timing as they get quicker.
3. This panning shot from behind the tree tracks the
artists movement. This is followed by a medium
close up in the woods. The pace of her movements
fits in with the timing of the music, therefore
illustrating the music.
4. This focus pull shot shows the depth of the forest and
also shows how little leaves left on the trees. This
links with the atmosphere as she is the only person
around. Only a slightly can red berries be seen on the
bush, this could shows that life in the forest is starting
but also the colour connotations from red are danger
but is more likely to be love in the case of this video.
5. This close up side shot of the artist shows her facial
expressions and emotion she is portraying. Linking
to the mood of despair and emptiness, the colours
tie in with the overall mise en scene and produce a
cold music video.
6. This low angle shot of the trees again shows that
everything has gone which was once there, this
could also be the message within the narrative. The
sky is also white which could connote purity,
coldness and emptiness. This also applies to her
dress.
7. Again this focus pull shot inside the cabin, of the
other two artists are used as cross over shots to
show the music amplifying the visuals as a guitar is
heard. The colours of the scene are brown and
orange, these are often associated with a indie folk
genre, therefore conforming to conventions of indie.
8. This shot eye level close up shot of the artists feet
shows the danger of the nails in the bridge. This
could show how the artist only cares about the
person she is missing. The length of the artists dress
can represent a fashion era or the fact that it might be
set in the past.
9. This shot high angle of the artist lying down shows a
representation to an animal in the woods as she is
lying in the soil. As she is alone it also seems as if she
waiting for someone. One spotlight is used in this part
because the viewers are supposed to focus on the
artists facial expressions and body movement.
10. This close up of the artists hands shows a voyeuristic
side to the video as the artist sings to herself. The
use of this at the end of the video amplifies the lyrics
and visual as it says ‘you and I will be safe and
sound’. It seems as if she know who she waiting for
therefore waiting in the woods for them.
