                     aggregator
is a web page
or program that
allows you to

agencies. Your Specific

avatar

An avatar is a pictorial representation of a real person on a
social network, or, more commonly, in digital gaming.
A blog is an online
journal that is
                        blog
frequently updated
and gives the
writer’s opinion on a
particular topic.

Blogs can be used
with students for
writing responses,
reading journals,
discussion of
controversial issues,
or in place of a
school paper. The
most current entry
usually appears at
the top of the page.
chat
       “Chat” uses a
       program or web site
       to allow people to
       converse through
       written messages in
       real time. Although
       Chat has developed
       a negative
       connotation, there are
       safe and free apps
       that
       allow you to create
       your own meeting
       room
       and invite only those
       you wish to attend.
cloud
Cloud Computing, or the Internet
Cloud refers to the Internet, and,
specifically, storage space on
servers owned by Internet
corporations and service providers.
When you purchase music or
eBooks from Amazon, for example,
your media is retained in a drive on
their servers, your personal cloud
space. You can access this from any
computer with internet access as
well as your phone or tablet. Most
Web 2.0 applications operate in the
cloud and not on the hard drive of
your computer.
Creative Commons
          Creative Commons is a
          system of licensing
          especially for works
          published on the Internet.
          These free licenses are a
          way for “content creators” to
label their works to let others
know if the content may be
          used, changed,
          commercialized, and so
          forth. These licenses also let
          other Internet users find
          music, photos, art-work and
          presentations that are
          available for use without
          writing for permission (or
          violating copyright laws).
email
Email is a system for
sending extended written
communication
electronically from one
device to another via
telecommunications.

Gmail and Gaggle.net are
both good email
applications for educational
purposes.
hashtag

Hashtags came about as a
way for Twitter users to
track topics and find other
users discussing the same
topic. They consist of a
number symbol followed by
letters or a word. If you
search a certain hashtag,
all public messages with
that tag will appear in your
results.
instant messaging
Instant
messaging
uses a
program to
allow two or
more people to
communicate
in real time
using written
transmissions
over the
internet.
podcasts
     A podcast is a non-music audio
file created to be shared on the
     internet. College professors
     record lectures and make them
     available online; There are
     podcast series available, as well
     as educational lectures,
     speeches, and more. When
     video is combined with audio,
     the files are generally called
     “vodcasts”.
RSS feeds Subscription icons.

                      RSS stands for Really Simple
                      Syndication. Web publishers
can use RSS to send out
                      headlines of their newest
Aggregator webpage. publications. Individuals can
                      use an aggregator to view
                      the feeds they subscribe to.
                      Information of interest
                      comes to you for
                      convenience.
social networking
Social networking is the
use of websites to let
individuals, and
organizations connect
based on common
interests. The user in
encouraged to create
content and interact with
others, sharing ideas,
playing games, or
discussing concepts.
tag
On social
networking
sites, like
Facebook,
users can
tag pictures
with other
user names
to share this
A tag is a keyword or term
information
                      assigned to a piece of
or media
                      information so that the
with the
                      information can be found
other users.
in a data search. A set of
                      tags can belong to news,
a blog, or a social network.
You can click on a tag and
                      bring up information on
                      that topic.
tag cloud
            Social (community)
            web pages often ask
            you “tag” your entries
            so others looking for
            specific topics can
            find those entries. If
            the web page has a
            tag cloud, users click
            on a word to bring
            articles with those
tags to the top of the
            list. The larger the
            word in a tag cloud,
            the more frequently
            that tag has been
            used on the web site.
Web 2.0
In the early days of the
      Internet, information was
      presented in text and
      graphics, and users read web
      pages to gather information.
Web 2.0 refers to the more
      interactive Internet which has
      developed, allowing users to
take an active part in sharing
      their own information and
      opinions, and interacting with
each other, as well as with
      Web-based media.

internet. Church services, rock concerts, and
lectures are all types of webcasts.

seminar transmitted
over the Internet. A key
feature of webinars is

widget
         Web widgets are
         small applications
         that are built into
         websites to make
         the site interactive.
         Calendars,
         calculators,
         weather, and sticky
         notes are examples
         of widgets.
wiki
Wikis are websites created
for collaboration.
Members or invitees can
work together to share
ideas and build a
community of lesson plans,
book reviews, or hints on
playing a game.
A person creates a wiki
and invites others to join.
The owner can set different
levels of access for users.
This wiki allows high school
writing classes and
teachers to collaborate and
share ideas.
